I'm curious as to how the Developers got Quake 3 to run on the Dreamcast? I know the game is capped at 30FPS from what I've read but by watching gameplay footage of both versions and comparing screenshots I honestly can't tell any differences between the two games. If anything there's just a resolution difference.

Was the Dreamcast really that powerful of a console for the time it came out? I actually own the PC version of the game myself and the Dreamcast port just fascinates me. I mean, Quake III was a benchmark game for years and was really a graphical leap for it's time.

If im honest I don't remember it being that great lookin to be honest. I can think of A few games that were better looking. It just never stuck in my mind as A technical marvel.

I remember being failry impressed, as there hadn't been another big name FPS on the consoel until that point, and playing it online with such a small modem really was a technical acheivement.

Ah true I was impressed with the online element. I got the mouse and keyboard specifically for that game.

I didn't think Quake 3 was anything special graphically, to be honest. I'm not sure what limitations were made in order to port the game from PC to DC though, if any. As far as I know, I thought it was just a straight port.

Unreal Tournament, on the other hand, now there's a game that was vastly different on DC than its PC counterpart...

The limitations from what I recall were:

*no real time curves (basically, more polygonal curved surfaces
*limit to how many players in a room
*much less Anti-Aliasing
*lower particle effects on rocket blasts, plasma, blood splatters etc
*some graphics switched to 2D depending on the amount of people playing
*map size vs player limits depending on how many people on one console
*enforced lag rule online (so even if you had the Broadband adapter, your rockets would lag on purpose)

I remember reading about it in OSM UK :)

Random toss from me but erm... The Dreamcast port isn't anywhere near the graphical game as the PC version is. The Dreamcast was a "dream" to hack, that and it ran a verison of Windows. Which meant you could easily port PC to DC with very little problems. And it has a keyboard and mouse meaning you could do all sorts with it. As for the PS2 version... I only play QIIIA on my PC and DC becuase yeah, their the same (you could play PC gamers with a DC). Think of the little box as a box of loveliness that can create PC games without hassle.

Quake 3 on Dreamcast was pretty fun, wish I still had my GD-ROM for it.

Q3A was a landmark release on the Dreamcast, for sure. It came out at a time where most top-level PC games needed thousands of dollars of the newest hardware to run anywhere near acceptable, and for the Dreamcast to handle a very respectable port for it's meager $299 asking price was nothing short of amazing. The constant frame rate was a godsend, and the online gameplay worked very well, even with the slight lag. You could still hold your own against PC players on the servers...at least I did.

Smeep answered the topic creator's questions to a T. I specifically remember some of the graphics going 2D if enough players joined in an online match.

I thought Quake III Arena was a fantastic game. The single player was decently challenging as far as I remember, and it was my first favorite First-Person Shooter ever.

I don't really care about a mouse and keyboard when playing a FPS, I can handle a game controller just fine. Even the Dreamcast's.

I think it looks pretty good. The DC is a pretty rad little console. I think it really pushed the industry out of the 32 bit era effectively. Too bad most the developers just dumped PS1 quality games on it because they were too lazy to update their stuff from the last gen consoles. Sorry, stretched the topic a bit.
