Apologies for putting this up late. I've been ill over the weekend.
This weeks choice is by Mr Reknoc and it is Dragon quest/warrior for the nes. Released in 1986 in japan and 89 in north america.
Heres some info:

Dragon Warrior, also known as Dragon Quest (ドラゴンクエスト, Doragon Kuesuto?) in Japan, is a role playing video game developed by Chunsoft and originally published in Japan by Enix Corporation (now known as Square enix Co., Ltd.) for the Famicom console It is the first game in the Dragon quest series (also known as the Dragon Warrior series in North America).

The protagomnist of the story is a warrior who is a descendent of the legendary hero Erdrick (known in some versions as Loto). Starting in the chambers of King Lorik, the player is made aware that the Dragonlord has stolen the Ball of Light which must be reclaimed to restore peace to the land. Although this minimalistic story presents itself at the beginning, the player will find more minor story elements to the game as it progresses. These mostly occur through dialogues with NPC's that detail rescuing the Princess Gwaelin, the destruction of the town of Hauksness, and the hints about relics needed to reach the Dragonlord.

That's an interesting choice, its been mostly platformers until now :) I'll give it a go when I get home

That's what made me choose Dragon Quest really. Well we all know the NES has two JRPGs (not entirely true, but only 2 that matter) Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Not sure how many of you have played the first FF but I couldn't really force people to play the NES version with the much better MP system so I decided on Dragon Quest.

Now I like the original Dragon Quest (4) ok so it's graphics are incredibly dated even for a NES game, and the gameplay might be a little too hard for some but whatever. I like the fact that you're basically free to do what you want all you're told to do is rescue the princess, though admittedly unlike the Elder Scrolls games all you can do is rescue the Princess.

Awesome music aswell.

I'm having trouble finding a NES rom, is it okay to play the SNES version (Dragon Quest I & II)? =/

Eh, yea. Though I wouldn't have thought it be that hard, are you looking for Dragon Warrior (the name it was given outside of japan)?

Do I ever get to choose one of these?

Well I've played it for a while..

Problem is I don't really know how to compare, I've not played many NES games...the earliest RPG's I can think of are like Phantasy Star, or Sword of Vermillion and they looked crap.

So graphically its fairly pleasing =] and it plays well, Dragon Quest as a series is something I've never played...so yeah, its interesting

I've always wanted to beat the first one, but I think I got a little RPG jaded after beating Dragon Quest V. I think the Game Boy Colors are actually superior to the NES versions of 1-3, but that's just my opinion. =]

This is like a must-play title for every JRPG-fan, since it all pretty much started here. At the same time, it feels so extremely aged and slow which make it really hard for me to even stay awake. (Lack of sleep + Really slow game = Not the the best combination)

A sure classic, but I think both the first Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star are way superior in every possible way.

Word! I've played DQ3 on on GBC and was amazed by some of the graphics. Especially the enemy animations. First time I saw them, I thought they were gonna jump right out of the screen. Mighty impressive.
