EDIT:

Want to see the latest? Every day I'll be uploading the latest files to the site sometime in the evening, visit http://radiosega.dreamhosters.com/ to see the progress.

I hope to launch Monday... Fingers crossed!

----------------------
Just a little post to give you guys a taste of what's coming, I'm still working in Photoshop on it but here's what I've got so far.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/7683/rs07zl7.jpg

That screen shot is from Fantasy Zone, the screenshot will be a random one out of a series of ten screenshots from System-16 / Mega Drive games. Everytime you load a page you'll see a random one of the ten.

Working on navigation right now, nearly got it to my liking, the blue bar will show the current playing track with little buttons as quick links to tune in.

Hope to have the design done tomorow and have the template coded by tomorow evening so I can start to chuck in the PHP, content and other stuff.

(Excuse the crap JPEG compression)

Man, that is 20 times better than what we've got now! I LOVE IT! Do you know what other games you're going to add?

Please say Space Harrier...

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 02:54
So far I've got:
Sonic The Hedgehog
Fantasy Zone
Golden Axe
OutRun
Ristar

I want Space Harrier, just need to find a screenshot that looks good in that super wide "letterbox" view. I'm also going to put Streets of Rage up there too, and perhaps Shinobi III.

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 02:58
Don't forget Alex Kidd!

About Space Harrier, I can get an emulator and capture a shot for you if you want, just tell me what kind of image you want. I was thinking about having the hero in the upperleft with the Dragon coming at him.

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 03:01
Is it MAME or Mega Drive emulator? I'm gonna get a MAME shot since the System-16 games look better. I need the hero quite low down and not up in the sky.

Basically this is wrong:
http://digilander.libero.it/calimerosegg/gallery/system16/harrier.gif

Since he's far too high up. I need him hovering just above the ground infront of the dragon. If you want get us a Mega Drive screenshot and I'll see how it compares.

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 03:07
Okay, you know only Space Harrier II came out on Genesis/Mega Drive, right?

I'll get a shot in it and we'll see.

EDIT: Apparently, I was wrong, there is Space Harrier 1. My bad.

Sorry about the second one being on the ground, but that thing gets hard when you stall for a while!

That's as big as the emulator will go, sorry...

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 03:25
Cheers, just blew the image size up in Photoshop.

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/590/sharqm0.jpg

I'll try a MAME screenshot too and see what looks better in terms of colour and detail.

Thanks NiGHTS!

Stupid "Mark Forums Read" feature.... Its the only reliable way I've found to clear the "new sonic" icons but if I time it badly, I'll miss out on posts like this.

Looks pretty neat. Just by its nature, it sounds like the random changing video game character feature on ocremix.org (http://www.ocremix.org/) This random theme is just for the header, right? It would be kinda obnoxious seeing the whole page go from Fantasy Zone green & pink to say Sonic blue.

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 03:28
Yeah just the screenshot in the header will change.

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 03:29
(Should've waited for that dragon to go down an inch...)

It might be nice to include a skin feature in case someone doesn't want their forums Fantasy Zone pink.

I bet the Arcade pics are better.

Any other games you need? Do you have a Ristar pic yet? I've never played it and I'd love to have a reason to try it out!

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 03:30
Yeah got the shot, but try it anyway! Great game!

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 03:33
Just thought about this, but what about Altered Beast? That was definitely one of the more legendary Genesis Games.

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 03:37
Don't worry NiGHTS, I've moved the dragon lower. Yeah I was thinking of that one actually.

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 03:42
Haha, thanks. I also thought about Afterburner and......Oops......(I forgot.)

Sorry if I seem aggressive or annoying, but my site was dead a week after it started, and I don't want this site to suffer the same fate. (Don't think that's a threat, though.) If you want me to leave it all to you, just say the word.

I also thought about Chakan, but does anyone REALLY remember Chakan?

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 03:49
Haha don't worry mate, you're just excited. ;)
RadioSEGA will never die (well asides from last summer...)! After Burner is a really fucking good idea, ta!

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 03:51
Cool, well, I've got to go to bed, it's late over here!

Post what kind of shot you want, and I'll try to make it before school in the morning!

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 03:54
Well you have an idea of the size I need the image, so as you play imagine how high I need the screenshot cut, try and get the plane level with the horizon with the baddys coming at you.

Late? I thought you were from the USA? It's 3AM here mate! :P

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 03:55
WOW. I'm 14, so I have to go to bed early.....:(

SegaMark

I could of swore you were older, hey, take that as a compliment! I'm a 21 year old student who's powered by instant noodles and beer! Huzzah!

Anyway, thanks once again for your help with that screenshot, wait until Monday, that's the day I'm hoping to flick the switch!

Mufasa
27-02-2007, 04:10
I also thought about Chakan, but does anyone REALLY remember Chakan?

Kinda. I at least remember the full title (off the top of my head)... Chakan: The forever man and playing it briefly. Don't recall liking it though.

Now it you want to talk about forgotten goodies... I never hear much of anything about Eternal Champions.

Late? I thought you were from the USA? It's 3AM here mate! :P

Wow. 3AM? Guess you don't have to go to class in the morning or are really into self torture.

I could of swore you were older, hey, take that as a compliment! I'm a 21 year old student who's powered by instant noodles and beer! Huzzah!

Now I'm starting to feel old. I'm 28.

27-02-2007, 04:24
Hey that looks amazing. One suggestion though! You need to add Streets of Rage if you can!

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 04:27
Right, uploaded the very start of it all to http://radiosega.dreamhosters.com/ -- this is my new server, and I've set up a temporary domain name, when RadioSEGA moves it will still be radiosega.net :)

Started the CSS and you can see how the image rotation works.

If you don't see any updates for a day or two, I'm probally still working on it, I actually have a web server with php and shit configured on my PC... Means I don't have to upload a file every five seconds to test it. :P

Mufasa
27-02-2007, 04:30
Right, uploaded the very start of it all to http://radiosega.dreamhosters.com/ -- this is my new server

That looks awesome. :) I think all the ones you've done look good--except the Sonic one. It really doesn't fit in with the active style the other images convey.

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 04:34
Yeah it's a temporary one, I'm too tired and lazy to open an emulator this evening. :D

Glad everyone likes it so far, it's taken me weeks to come up with a design to beat this current one. I'm such a git when it comes to my site design, it changes with the fuckin' seasons! Anyway, I'm using CSS/DIV layout for the first time with this site after a few months practise. The new site will be 100% W3C standards compliant too.

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/135/sonicthehedgehog1oc5.png

When I think about Sonic the Hedgehog, the first two things I think of are that first enemy and the bridge with the badniks jumping up, so that's why I did those.

Did you really think I was older? Weird. Maybe it's because I don't word my sentences like most 14 year olds I know. I posted a bad quality picture in my profile, so you know what I look like. When I get a digital camera, I'll take a good one. I need a scanner too.....:(

SegaMark
27-02-2007, 14:02
I like the bridge one, could you do it so he's running at it?

Aye, most members who are 13/14 here seem to have some kind of problem with the English language, haha.

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 15:37
Yeah, I'm posting from school, so I can't do it, but when I get home, I'll be sure to.

What about Ecco? That's a classic! (There's too many classic SEGA Genesis games!)

I guess I forgot to close the browser window, so it says I'm logged in.

Click the login button to see how the new login box works. So far it's fucked up in IE6 and IE7, I'm yet to start doing any IE testing, I've not included the code to make IE6 display PNG graphics properly. But you get the idea!

Mufasa

My first impression... Did you take a clue from Microsoft (http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/) (click security video)? ^_^

Gah! Not those ads!

Mufasa
27-02-2007, 19:45
Gah! Not those ads!
I guess my impression's point is that its a little overly dramatic for a login. That and its got that "You have clicked login. Would you like to provide login credentials?" feel to it. I'd just assume see the text boxes when I am not logged in than have a separate screen. On the up side, it was a pretty login form.

NiGHTS into Dreams...
27-02-2007, 20:50
I like the new login! It looks more advanced and interesting.

I'm still at school, but I'll be home in an hour, and I'll get that Sonic pic.

Btw, do any of you guys know of a website I can go to to maybe learn some coding or something? I feel like a fifth wheel....

Google has been my friend in that department. I only went to College one year but I've managed to really seat myself into a software development career.

Coding is a quite general term, but assuming you don't want to pay for anything--you might try doing something like downloading the VMWare player (http://www.vmware.com/download/player/) and learning Linux and the various languages available on it (like Perl and PHP).

NiGHTS into Dreams...

My internet has slowed down substantially as well. Odd.

Mufasa
27-02-2007, 22:50
Only 4 images per post, so I'll double post.

Yeah thats obnoxious. I had to combine images on my Sega ad campaign (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=123) thread. Even more obnoxious is that smileys count against the image count...

Could we go to 50/100 instead? I've got plans for some future link rich posts that would work much better with linked icons next to names. If one would argue that that is too many images... One could also argue that there isn't a limit on the size of a single image either so if someone wanted to be abusive in general, they could regardless of the image limit.

Mufasa
27-02-2007, 23:24

We do. Go to Edit, and Delete is in the bottom right corner of the text window. Dang it. If its not PHPBB tricking me its vBulletin. On my forum, I was using the delete next to user posts to remove a users post. I recently found out that deleted the whole thread. I needed to get into edit and then delete. Figures they'd bury delete in the same place here too.

Bonanza Bros! What about Bonanza Bros.?

SegaMark
28-02-2007, 02:49
Take a look now.

Right first things first, I hate that navigation, it's going.
I like what I did with the rounded box for the content, so to make it all look matched I'll make the edges of the template rounded and matching too, not a huge amount of work to do that, just gotta edit some images.

The navigation are going to be coloured tabs sticking out the very top of the site, you'll see what I mean when I do it, it'll probally look SegaOfJapan-esque, but fuckit, I love that design and I may borrow one or two tiny ideas... :P

I actually have no idea what VMware is to be honest, some kind of development shit I think.

Its PC virtualization software (a PC emulator). You can run an operating system in your operating system. Run Linux on Windows. Run Windows on Linux. Run Vista on Windows 2000 or vice versa... The player is VMWares free version of the software.

Looking good there Mark and i guess the prizes are for the Score Attacks right???

I for one am hoping for more concrete contests. One idea I've had was a kinda "Name that Tune" game. A post is made a a specific time (so everyone at least knows when to be glued to the computer) that contains a link to a song that is not currently in RadioSEGA but will be soon. Then the first one to post the correct title/usage of the song and game it is from wins.

Score Attacks are neat but too cheatable. Now maybe some XBOX Live score attacks might be a good idea--especially if its coordinated with the release of new games (so nobody has an opportunity to prepare unfairly).

SJSSF
28-02-2007, 18:29
How about forceing them to post or PM a picture of the scores (Better on a emulator) to the person who is in charge and if it IS genuine then it's accepted!!

The "Name the Tune" is great but how about every now and then "warp" the music so thats it proves a challenge??

PhotoShop is a very easy way to boost your score. It can be done in a manner that you can't tell it was done too. I don't trust score screen shots. I feel much better trusting something like XBOX Live where its less likely scores will be doctored.

The "Name the Tune" is great but how about every now and then "warp" the music so thats it proves a challenge??

Another way I think we can do "name that tune" is to do what I heard one radio station do which is to play the song backwards.

SegaMark
02-03-2007, 02:31
I think the site will be ready in the next two weeks if I want to be realistic, I've got a lot on with University sadly.

In regards to ideas on how to run the competition, I've been kicking around ideas like name that tune, but we have to consider the fact people from all over the globe listen, from many different time zones.

The first competition I want to keep it simple, but here's an idea.
On the competition page there could be a small flash music player, that plays a tune which is being played in reverse and at a different speed, the user will select an answer from a choice, and enter any details I require and hit submit.

Any correct answers will go into a draw.

Mufasa

OH MY GOD. I NEED IT.

Is that official, and how large is it?

The only Sonic stuff I have is 2 Sonic Adventure Sonic figures, one Sonic Adventure Tails figure, and a T-Shirt.http://i10.ebayimg.com/04/i/000/8a/dc/bd57_1.JPG

Mine looks just like that but it doesn't have Sonic the Hedgehog on the sleeve.

OH MY GOD. I NEED IT.

Is that official, and how large is it?

My friend wouldn't tell me anything about where he got it. He's a gem collector and asked me one day if there were any particular stones/gems I would like. I then sent him a link on Chaos Emeralds and told him I always wished I had the blue one. The "emerald" is one of the correct sizes they are in the game (yes the size has varied). Just like in Sonic '06, I can hold it cupped in my hand and see the whole top surface with my fingers around it.

And looks like thats a shirt I don't have yet... Probably 'cause its not in adult size. Does remind me that I did recently snag myself 3 new Sonic shirts though...
This (http://www.topheavyclothing.com/catalog/sonic-charge-mens-tshirt-p-130.html) one is Sonic X, but its all Japanese and he is in an awesome pose so I got it.
This (http://www.topheavyclothing.com/catalog/king-of-bling-mens-tshirt-p-30.html) one is classic Sonic. Wish it said Rings instead of Bling.
This (http://www.topheavyclothing.com/catalog/the-quickness-mens-tshirt-p-36.html) one continues the style from the original Hot Topic shirt.

Not so sure Mark can fund that idea... He's gotta ship prizes too ya know. Besides, why rush out and buy shirts and find out they are the wrong size for winners. It would be better to just keep the money around and get a shirt size preference later.

Now the swag from Sega of Europe... You get what you get. :)

I'll see how this contest goes, and pay it all myself for postage since it's only t-shirts in jiffy bags so the package won't be heavy.

But for the next one yes, definately and we can set that up in future. I've been thinking about having a yearly donation payment done via PayPal (vBulletin has a subscriptions mode which uses PayPal and automatically chanegs your account upon donation). Members who donate £3~5 a year get special account features.

Over at rllmuk.com that involves the ability to start polls and more PM inbox space.

Ideas I have for this forum could be more PM box space, the ability to post polls, custom user titles and the possibility finding a way to allow a donating user to have more request credits a day, rather than the default 20.

RadioSEGA operates at a loss which I don't mind at all, I refuse to place adverts on the site, and I don't want to make money in any way. I'm looking to upgrade RS to 128K Stereo so that would of course cost me a bit more, but I don't mind right now.

Money donated will go back into the site. Paying for hosting and prizes.

Ah... Features like a custom rank title. So people don't go through that awkward gender confused state as they post more messages ("Amy Rose"!!!)... Besides, who wants to be known as a Flicky? Almost sounds derogatory. (in my best military voice) "Alright all you low ranking Flicky maggots...."

Yes it can be done (it sounds very similar to the wallpaper upload feature I coded on my web site), but I think its more of a matter of what Mark wants to do with the site. From the reaction I got when I wanted to do something with the radio functionality... I'd say he doesn't want to go there at this time.

Anyhoo, I don't want the site to turn into a Sonic fansite, there's already loads of them out there, and I'd never want to run a Sonic fansite, ever.

So I don't want to be using the ban hammer to kill off 11 year old kids who have no respect for the English language. Because that's what 90% of them are. :)

I want to get away from the whole Sonic theme, hence the rotating screenshot banner on the new site. It's about all Sega, not just Sonic.

Hopefully some new features will pop up in July when I'm off for the summer from Uni.

Nope I won't add stuff like that, it's going away from the point of a radio site, and there's plenty of sites dedicated to it already.

Hmmm. Makes me wonder whom the competition is... Then I remembered Sega Games Radio (http://radio.emulationzone.org/chan1/). It is interesting how they are a little more radio like with scheduled talk shows. Guess thats why the front page of RadioSEGA still mentions a "Shows" feature. There is still a desire to move towards the radio theme.

Sonic Hour is a must, I was thinking of AM2 hour too. That would have Shenmue, OutRun, Virtua Fighter, Space Harrier, Super Hang On and more!
Question, would these "theme" shows have an actual DJ on air or just the continous songs?
Just the songs.

After digging up an old "Ideas for new shows (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?p=203)" thread, it sounds like the "shows" feature shouldn't be that hard to implement since it won't be like a real radio talk show at all. Its just a matter of adding classification grouping data to the songs and only having only a specific class play during a specific hour. Scheduled sub play lists if you will...

FACT: 90% of Sonic fanboys piss me off. :P
So I don't want to be using the ban hammer to kill off 11 year old kids who have no respect for the English language. Because that's what 90% of them are. :)

Hopefully some new features will pop up in July when I'm off for the summer from Uni.

I'm guessing we won't see the "shows" feature until then. Hmmm... I'd almost call them themed hours rather than shows. Anyhow, I think we are all looking forward to the features to come in RadioSEGA "2007". ^_^

SegaMark
07-03-2007, 20:14
Aye I still want to impliment the themed hours, but it means taking time to set it up, which I don't have right now, but it will come!

Not sure about talking on air yet, I have a nasty accent because I'm from near Liverpool. :P And it's basically a case of "what do we talk about?" without boring everyone to tears.

I've done some on air stuff last summer for contests and a interview with Richard Jacques, which was played on air two hours after it was recorded. But for now I want the whole point of RadioSEGA to be 100% Music, 100% of the time.

Oh and I'll be getting jingles sorted, I had some for Sonic Hour last year, I'll try and post the link to one. I know a guy in radio so I can get the voices professionally recorded for free. :)

Yes on this (http://www.radiosega.net/listen.php) page. It currently can't be more than 10 people concurrently though. I think that the "Radio Sega Forum Statistics" at the bottom of this page (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/) are more important.

Too bad the current RadioSEGA forum layout places the avatar on top of the message instead of the side (like it does on my forum). Then there really isn't much of a space waste issue on most posts. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a dynamic width design too, but thats another topic..

SegaMark
12-03-2007, 02:29
I've purposly placed it across the top, I used to have stuff down the side, but I prefer this layout. I like my sites a certain width designed for at least 1024x768. Large avatars and signatures IMO are stupid, I'm more interested in a user's post than their avatar.
Anyway, with the avatar across the top we have the full width of the forum to take advantage of.

I'm going to add a bit of code that automatically resizes posted images so they're not too big.

I don't think anyone will see the new site until Easter now. I'm starting to get handed loads of assignments to do. Laaame.

Mufasa
12-03-2007, 02:50

(thinking to self)
"*checks signature*... OK I'm under the height of Mark's signature... And I'm just fully utilizing the width that would have otherwise gone to wasted space..."

I'm going to add a bit of code that automatically resizes posted images so they're not too big.

I sure hope your coding only resizes images that exceed the dimension limits and leaves the rest alone. I too can't stand how images that are too wide break the site design (and personally hate horizontal scroll bars), so I make sure that all my images stay within the maximum width. Thats one reason why I made my new signature a "pixel perfect" width.

Anyway, with the avatar across the top we have the full width of the forum to take advantage of.

So maybe 100x80 avatars? LOL I know FPS_Leo's avatar would look better with more width. ;)

I don't think anyone will see the new site until Easter now. I'm starting to get handed loads of assignments to do. Laaame.

Sorry to be nagging so much to get administration functions lately Mark. I'm use to being able to fix things myself, so my only recourse has been to follow up every once and a while. Anyhow, I was wondering why, when things just started heating up (previews of the new site design and current/future media rich posts), you almost totally disappeared. Can't wait until your summer break. ;)

SegaMark
12-03-2007, 02:57
The image magical image size thingymajig only resizes if an image exceeds the image size limit, and allows the image to be clicked so the full size image can be viewed. I need to get spoilers added too.

I'll probally have a rectangular avatar limit. I need to leave a bit of space though because I'm going to add some XBOX Live stuff to the userbar I reckon.

I like how you used the full width for the signature actually. Those rules be out of date. ;)

For the radio show idea, I just had a great one to try.

RadioSEGA NEWS!

A team could be assembled to find worthy news, write it, record it and produce it before sending it to me to add to RadioSEGA so the news bulletin can be played every 120 minutes for example. Could be a nice 2~5 minute news bulletin show highlighting news from SEGA, RadioSEGA and the fansite community.

A special user group could be made for these people with some staff positions perhaps...
Prsenter(s), Editor, Researcher(s)? ;)

Two editions could be recorded a week perhaps.

NiGHTS into Dreams...

Yeah! I nominate Mufasa and.....someone else! (me? PLEASE?)

That's not a bad idea. There's a lot of SEGA news recently, and I bet something like that would be nice! We could have a bi-weekly news program, and post the highlights of each "episode" on the boards.

SegaMark

Well we can decide on roles and who can work on it in a few weeks, maybe construct the team before the big launch, so RadioSEGA News is one of the great new features. Don't want a huge team because too many cooks spoil the broth, init. But we could have a team of around 3-5 working on it each with a role, and a dedicated area on the board out of public view which only the team can see.

I'll rarely work on it, because I want this team to create this and be very proud of it all.

Its a very good point. For myself, the more involved the "show" project gets, the less frequent I'd like it to occur. I think it would be best to figure out what is the minimal amount of time everyone involved can commit to and work with that. Wouldn't want an easter launch with a bang to fizzle out quick because too much time was committed to. Either way, Mark will be selecting people for teams and tasks so lets just sit tight until he's ready to move forward.

Also due to time zone differences (US/UK audiences) it sounds like one side (or both sides alternating?) will end up catching the broadcast later and/or via download/podcast.

True. For the time zone thing, I think that having a schedule list on the site wouldn't be a bad idea. It could contain all of the times for all of the time zones.

I was thinking that one or two casts coult be produced a week, each cast is basically a radio style news bulletin lasting a few minutes. Once produced this bulletin will be played every so often on RadioSEGA, maybe every two hours or so until the next one is produced. If you get what I mean. This won't be live, it will all be pre-recorded and produced.

Does anyone ever listen to ormgas? Well i was thinking since they have little promo things like saying " Alot of you are listning to the site and not visiting the site" then give out the url. i found this station on the VLC media player radio list. I had to google itto see if there was a site. I have audio city and love messing around with things like this. So count me in on this too!

Mufasa

Does anyone ever listen to ormgas?

I haven't in a while, but I use to. I got so tired of listening to those static jingles--its clear they didn't have an expiration. At least people kept making new remixes and they had a good system to get those remixes live fast.

Which does bring up a good point. I think part of the lower listeners at the moment is because of the lack of updates to the track list (thats one reason I find myself tuning RadioSEGA off at work at times--I'm just tired of the same songs). Maybe we should sandbag (hold back) some of the new songs/tracks and release them at a specific interval. That way it keeps it fresh consistently instead of when we (and by we I mean Mark) has time to update the song list.

Also one of the features I've seen in LaunchCast (http://ca.music.yahoo.com/launchcast/setup.asp) I'd love to see but probably won't... The ability to rate songs (only one rating per user) and skip songs (within your daily limit). Too bad that'll probably mean tossing out the existing solution and going for a new one. :(

Hey guys.

You're all sat here on the brand new server, and as you can see the forums are working.

I'm just finishing the main site off, it's a case of getting things working and tweaking the design until I'm pleased with it.

Delayed because of me cocking up loads of the PHP and having to mess with databases, servers etc etc... Working most of the time didn't help too..!

Hope you all look forward to the new site. :)

Well the forums are kind of working. I flushed my DNS and finally got the forums instead of the redirect page. Looks like the forum design is pretty broken. You didn't by any chance forget to upload some files, have local file references (eg. c:\website\myimage.jpg) or are viewing a copy with cached images, are you? RadioSega looks like for me--just a solid white background for the most part.

Its OK Mark, we know you mean well. I know for myself, its a lot easier to find myself with "writers block" or wanting to avoid doing something when I feel obligated to do so (homework--yech!). Its true you've committed times to us, but I think at this point it might be better to go at your own pace and release things as you go. Things you enjoy to do just aren't as much fun if you turn them into work. That's probably one reason I abandoned the idea of becoming a video game tester early on.

Having a nice RadioSEGA all at once is nice, but coming back time and time again and seeing it progress into something better can be just as rewarding. It gives you something to look forward to each time you visit.

Its true that the delayed launch has probably affected people's views about the site (as it has mine), but in the end I think its still a great place for people to be brought together by their passion for Sega and video games in general. You don't need radio, contests or a slick new web site to foster a sense of community. We have a [mostly] working forum now. It'd be nice to have our Admin back to posting regularly again and just enjoying himself... :)

Cheers!

I was thinking more along the lines of the content feed rather than the update method. The site is pleasantly content rich, just don't want it to get stale. Also reminds me... You might want to add the RSS feed link (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/external.php?type=RSS2) somewhere. I wasn't even aware that vBulletin offered the feed. It should make it easier for people to watch for threads they may have missed after being out for a few days--especially in mail clients like Outlook 2007 that support RSS feeds.

Right I've modded the flash player for the web player to hopefully check if a port is open or not.

I know Mufasa has port problems at work, could you please open http://www.radiosega.net/flaplayer.swf and tell me what it says?
I'm guessing you realized your test flash was broken since I can't find your post where you mentioned your test player. At home (standard NAT, no outbound port restrictions and your beta player works fine) it tells me "PORT NOT OPEN".

SegaMark
06-06-2007, 15:33
Yeah I realised it didn't work.

I need a way to see if a client can connect to http://87.117.193.143:9380/ and if they can it will begin the stream, if not it'll display an error.

In flash I was hoping an if/else statement would work but it didn't.

I'm useless at ActionScript, do you know it at all? Or another method (JavaScript?) that could check a port?

Mufasa

I need a way to see if a client can connect to http://87.117.193.143:9380/ and if they can it will begin the stream, if not it'll display an error.
I'll try and play with that this evening. I somewhat know ActionScript and am pretty good at using Google/the Adobe documentation to figure out how to do what I want. In fact, I'll probably just cheat and look at the source for a flash MP3 player (like the one I use on my MySpace page (http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/)) and see what it does. I'm pretty sure it has connectivity messages.

Mufasa
11-06-2007, 09:58
OK I didn't get to check on it the evening I thought I would, but that was mostly because I had seriously misplaced my copy of Adobe Flash.

Now that I found it I played with this for a bit and think I have a solution for you. It was kinda funny though, while I was looking for an answer I had the same idea you had apparently coded. Too bad onLoad is only called after successfully loading an MP3. :) How did I know you tried that method? Google had already indexed this post (http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread.php?t=75341) of you asking for help. :P

And without further delay here is some code that I'm pretty sure will give you some ideas on how you can solve this...

var streamurl = 'http://87.117.193.143:9380/';
//var streamurl = 'http://127.0.0.1/';
var my_sound = new Sound();
my_sound.loadSound (streamurl,true);

checkplaying = function () {
trace ("Position: " + my_sound.position);
if (my_sound.position == 0) {
trace ("Ohs noes! The stream isn't playing!");
} else {
trace ("Yes, its Sega goodness!");
}
clearInterval(checkplayingi);
}

checkplayingi = setInterval(checkplaying, 5000);
