Fans of the Nintendo DS will be excited to learn of the upcoming new model, set to include a camera and music player, and improved memory card and wireless networking capabilities. A larger screen is also promised.
It has been announced that the new Nintendo DSi is set to get upgrades in line with what was rumoured, with Nintendo’s handheld now looking to be part of a wider plan to create a media distribution platform. The device will go on sale in November for ¥18,900, with an international release to follow in 2009.
The DS will get an integrated 3 megapixel camera, a 17% increase in screen size to 3.25 inches so as to better scrutinise the quarry, and higher quality sound reproduction.
Software will also be included to allow manipulation of the gathered images, and convenient music playback.
To store the photos taken a high capacity SD card slot is included, which can, more importantly, also hold all the downloadable content Nintendo is planning to sell by way of the new “DSi Shop”, set to mirror the functionality of the Wii’s.
Finally, improved wireless networking and the addition of a tuned version of the Opera browser look to offer much improved Internet capabilities.
The source is the Nintendo Conference 2008 Autumn, where they released detailed information (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/2008/081002.html).
So, the new DSi. Doesn't sound too bad if you ask me.
Yea those are pretty cool features.
Don't throw your DS away just yet though because the DSi does not have a GBA slot. Which is great, well done Nintendo.

Not hard, the iPhone is too bloody expensive so it's easily beaten.

Very true, not that I like the iPhone or anything
I suppose on the outset it seems interseting, it just bugs me...camera quality is probably useless, mp3's fair enough...it seems to be trying to hit that mobile phone market...without the phone XD and losing the GBA slot is genius, that'll please the hardcore fans I'm sure

So, Nintendo wants to transform the DS in a multimedia center? But, really the loss of the GBA slot makes me have second thoughts about this one.

I don't mind if they remove the GBA slot. If I wanna play GBA games I play them on my GBA SP since I think it's more comfortable to hold and has (at least in my case) longer battery life than the DS.
And since it seems like there aint gonna be any more GBA games released (at least no quality titles) I think it's safe to remove that function in the next DS version.

I guess that makes sense, but to me the extra features don't interest me that much, unless they really improve the wireless on the DS, because the current version is a pain with connection settings. Basically to me it doesn't justify the investment on a new piece of hardware.

True if the GBA slot was just used for that.
Doesn't Guitar Hero World Tour use the GBA slot? And the DS Rumble Pak?

Well, in my opinion, I'm a sucker for those features. It makes your DS that much more fun to use, and even if your not in the mood to play games you could:
-go on the internet
-Take photos
-Listen to music
...or other stuff. Oh and I dont know how they will incorporate the GBA slot since GH uses it, so that'll be dumb. But still for me, this is a must have. Oh, and has anyone else heard their other news? It's pretty sweet!

What came to my mind is the PSP has all of this really.

Yeah, and it plays video and does everything at a much higher resolution on a bigger screen...you'd be best picking up a slim & lite PSP and keeping a DS lite, best of both worlds really

Well it's more annoying on a PSP because I dont really like the memory stick stuff. SD cards are easier.

Technically they are SD cards. Just a different size one.
Might give this a look, dont really care about the cam or the music playback but the fact that it has downloadable content has got me thinking WiiWare on the move, could be interesting to see what happens with this. and built in internet sounds good just hope it has flash playback.
However I'm not too happy that I'll have to repost all my friend codes again if i get one.
The DSi, the biggest waste of plastic since..well..the iPhone I suppose.
Still, it'll fly off shelves because "OMG ITZ HIP YO!" Ugh..

What's not to like about them? £10 for a 2 GB, they're really compact, easier to store and sexier than SD cards XD most of my stuff uses Pro Duo now anyways
I'll be sorted for SD cards as I have a few left over from when I owned a Gizmondo (stop laughing:mad:).

As a girl who carry's her Nintendo DS in her purse, I would be pretty disappointed if they took away the GBA slot. I mean not to complain but it'd be annoying to carry around two systems. Plus, I'm growing out of the upgrade thing I think. It's such a big pain to go getting something new when they go upgrading like...every other year or so.
Also, what takes up room in my purse are the GBA games. And for some reason I really like that >>

I found GBA games to be compact and cool, but chunky enough so you don't lose them, with DS games I occasionally lost some, I'd always have to keep them in their cases -o-" not a bad thing, but I liked to fiddle with the GBA carts
Oh, and welcome to the forums :)

Same! I have never lost a game and never found it. But I lost one of my animal crossing games for the DS and never found it. ):
And thank you!
I'm just not into the small stuff nowadays. I sorta like bigger looking stuff and not thin n tiny. :3
I'm split on this, I'd love to have the built in browser, camera, MP3 player, and the DLC for games. Though I'd like some more specifics like camera quality, graphic output, power consumption rates, ect. I want more info before I'm sold.

It looks cool, but more like a "Look, we can do what Sony can do, too, and our guy is not that huge like an Xbawks!".
I'll stay with my Lite. I don't need an mp3-Player on my DS, I'm fine with my 15-€-Player which still works after 2 years of use. I don't need a camera either, and the browser is cool, but since I have no Wi-Fi, it doesn't matter to me anyway.

I bought my DS when it was originally released and I'm still happy with it; if I want a combination media/gaming device I'd get a PSP, it'd allow me a wider choice of games to compliment my DS.

That's a great outlook and something so many people miss these days >_>
Its like "I own a DS so must hate the PSP, I own a 360 so must hate the PS3"
Having another console just meants a much bigger library of games to choose from....and twice as many controllers to buy ;_;

I love the PSP's multimedia, the DS thrives more on totally off-the wall titles, Phoenix Wright? Who put that idea on paper? But it works so well :D

I highly recommend Phoenix Wright; it has a good balance of thinking, story, humour and shouting at inanimate objects.
Might give it a go some time.
But Phoenix Wright was originally a GBA game
I might be inclined to get this, maybe. I never bothered with a lite and I've had my original for well over 3 years now, the d-pad is alittle sticky and Dragon Quest IV is killing whats left of my A button. If I were to pick up a new DS it might aswell be this one.
Or I'll just get a PSP since that has all the Gundam games. :(

From what I can tell they're improved sequals to Federation vs Zeon. Though the DS does have that Gundam 00 game...
Bah, I don't think you wanna be getting a DSi, seeing as it's going to be region locked.
That said, it sounds like Nintendo are gonna start region locking games as soon as the DSi comes out. Suddenly it sounds like the PSP might have a tiny bit of an advantage over its rival.

I'm sorry, but that seems a bit (a lot) of a bad move. Why would they want to cripple their main money maker?
I don't know. Apparently they're claiming it's to do with the new model of DSi. If a game, or a specific piece of software, needs to DSi to run, it's gonna be region locked, and will only work on the DSi.
It's gonna be a piece of shit hardware. If you want a multimedia console, get a PSP. If you want a games handheld, get a DS Lite.
Seriously region locked?
But half of the games worth buying are import only!
That's a really dumb idea -_- I sort of expect handhelds to be region free now...

What kind of software? Could they possibly create games to work specifically with the DSi and not work with a normal DS? That's a bit dumb in my opinion.
Does this mean old DS games will look cramped on a bigger screen?
More interestingly, a new mario game DSI exclusive? Will that not piss off everyone that bought a DS Light last christmas?
The DS has thrived on its iPod image, stylish, small, cute...a new version would probably put most off...

From what I can tell it's supposed to be a squeal to the DS with DS backwards compatibility, rather than an just appearance change with a couple of added features.

To me this appears to be a break from the old DS and not a continuation. Many DS games use its touch screen as a gimmick. If this continue on the DSi and game makers start to use the new features as gimmick features on the games this will cripple the market for old DS users. This seriously is a big low blow to every DS user.
It's Nintendo trying to prove that they don't need their hardcore audience anymore, pretty much. The more a piece of hardware looks like an iPod, the more people will want it.
Very sad, but also very true.

What the hell?
Regionlocked? Are they insane?
Seriously. This is crap. I already have to import Apollo Justice because here only the French/German version is available, and I don't speak French and hate the German translations (with Lotta Heart having no accent at all, argh. In the French version she at least has a Provencian accent, but in the German... Nothing!).
The liberty of having homebrewn and imported stuff on the DS is what made the DS so special - is this really going to be a stupid PSP rip-off? Guh.
Nintendo, where are you heading?!

I was going to say that, it's been out here since May, you could've easily imported it.

The games aren't region lcoked, just DSi specific software.
Hm, but is the hardware?
Edit:
Those of you who intend to import a DSi (http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/10/02/nintendo-announces-nintendo-dsi/) from Japan next month may wish to revise your plans, as Nintendo has now confirmed that all DSi software will be region-locked. "DSi software (software that is only compatible with DSi) is region-locked, e.g: European DSi software can only be played on European DSi consoles," stated Nintendo's spokesperson to CVG, brutally driving a stake through our dreams of ever playing Japanese DSWare (http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/10/06/ds-daily-ware-down/).
There are elements of the DSi that are region-free -- you'll be able to surf the 'net wherever you are in the world, exchange photos with friends in other regions, and still play non-local DS games on the DSi -- but it looks like we can forget about importing (http://www.dsfanboy.com/category/items-of-import/) Japanese DSi software. It simply won't work.
Nintendo's messenger says this is because the DSi "embeds net communication functionality within itself" and provides "net services specifically tailored for each region." The fact that each region has unique age limits is also mentioned. What a thoroughly depressing start to the week! We're off for coffee and extra donuts.
Dr Shaneman

Well that sucks large amounts of ass.
I believe the DSi would be a good buy. Some DSware for it's SD storage, the use of the camera may have some interesting twist in some games, and maybe it could be used by the Wii as a webcam, or for some games... and what about the improved wifi? Well, lucky me, I was going to buy a DSlite in these days, now I can save the money for the new system.
About the new camera feature, I'm really hoping for a Gameboy Camera 2 that thing was awesome. :D
Also I very much doubt Nintendo will allow a Wi-fi webcam, it must have killed them to make something for voice chat.

Yea, though it shouldn't be as bad since I don't think the DSi's screen is that much bigger.
Nah, I don't think so, I think it's only about 2% bigger or something silly like that.
It's obviously going to make smooth looking DS games look a little jaggy though.

Yea, games like...
...
...
Uh.
The Ace Attorney's :D
And any sprite based games, really. Anything polygonal on the DS is jaggy anyway to an extent.

Breaking news from Nintendo itself: DSi to be released April 5, 2009 in North America! Start saving up, because its gonna be $170 USD.

Wow, if that price means a lot, then I can´t imagine how will the reaction of the mayority of you here, since a DS Lite cost around u$s 200-275. I´m already supposing a DSi around u$s 300.

I've got one on pre-order. I'm trading in my DS Lite so i can get it half price and some games i dont play anymore to bring the price down some more.

Yea if I was buying it I'd want to spend as little on it as possible aswell.
How come you're buying one for 7Force? Would be nice to see the reasons current DS owners are giving for wanting to willingly downgrade their consoles.

Well, my D-Pad is pretty bust due to snaking on Mario Kart.
Also because it has a camera, how super duper cool is that? That and I no longer have any use for the GBA slot since I found my GBASP and don't hate myself enough to buy that torture device Guitar Hero DS.
It's a 0.3 megapixel camera, you could probably get a better resolution out of a pinhole, so I can't really say it's a justifiable reason.

Hehe, owch.
It looks kinda cool from the pictures but I would never have one.
It looks to suffer from identity crisis, it wants to be a mobile phone but it can't call -_- that's the impression I get.

Sure only that makes no sense, it clearly wants to be a DVD player but can't play DVD's.

Its cheesy, ugly, it flips, it has a built in camera, it plays music. Its trying to appeal to the mobile phone crowd that are forever upgrading, right? That's what I feel.
Personally...I'd laugh if someone I knew actually bought one. Probably not bad extras if you don't own a ds but these days everyone has an mp3...or cell phone....has something with a camera, and all those other features, right?

They're pretty much bad extras no matter what they're on.
Isn't the DSi gonna have an online game store or something? And exclusive games? Those are the important things and what I care about, not its shitty camera or mp3 playback... Though the SD card slot could be decent I guess.
Wasn't there some sort of anti-piracy fiddly bob with this new SD card slot?
Either way the screen is still too small for me...there's still two of them and there's still a touch screen...so not for me.

Yea the DSi is still a DS
Not sure about the anti-piracy on the SD slot but I imagine there would be one. I'm just glad they decided to use an SD card instead of some shit overpriced format that doesn't work in anything else.

On the plus side, you can mess around with photos using the stylus in all sorts of weird ways.

Well the DSi shop interests me, pretty soon there is gonna be a new WarioWare game on the DSi shop which will use the DSi cam so that sounds like a fun idea.
that torture device Guitar Hero DS.
Oh god I have that thats one of the games i'm gonna flog. It was fun for a while but the real Guitar heor games where you use a big ass guitar are way better. That and the bloody thing killed my hand.

Hoho.
A Tokyo district court has finally awarded Nintendo the ban on “Majikon” and similar devices, usually used to circumvent copy protection on games for the Nintendo DS.
This bans import sales of the device and prevents the sale of such stock as is in the region. Major online auction sites now prohibit dealing in the tools.
The court:
“It was most proper of the court to recognise our claim, and we recognise this as an appropriate ruling. We and the other publishers will continue our efforts to ensure firm legal measures are taken against Majikon.”

It's a shame really cause it gives a negative impression of homebrew.
It's a shame really cause it gives a negative impression of homebrew.
That's true, if the DS created a simple community development kit and charged £40 for it, I'm sure we'd see some really innovative ideas emerging but that of course would make nintendo look lazy in comparison >_>
Remember Net Yaroze on the PS1? The old discs that came packed with loads of games? Whoa....dreamy
Net Yaroze was awesome. Didn't they start off doing the same for PS2, then call it off pretty early on?
As for user-generated DS development kits, I'm surprised Nintendo haven't gone down that road, especially as both Sony and Microsoft are doing it, albeit in different fashions.
I'm trying not to be monosyllabilic and the most I can come up with is bag of shit.
So I heard Nintendo are really trying to make a big push on developers to make Apps for the DSi, that's cool I guess.
Lol, probably because Nintendo are clever enough to realise that the DSi needs those Apps to differentiate itself from the DS Lite.
Lol, probably because Nintendo are clever enough to realise that the DSi needs those Apps to differentiate itself from the DS Lite.
Good on them then.
It would be interesting to see what sort of apps developers will come up with.
Crap ones, that'll just exploit the DSi and make them lots of money, without really being any good.

Are they trying to compete with Apple's ipod/iphone apps store?
Don't think they can but if they are able to create some well-crafted apps, then maybe they can fill the space between your average portable games console and a PDA-style device. The PSP certainly is failing that.

Why try to make it more than a games console when it IS just a games console?

Well, people tend, as I stated before, to go for the new pieces of hardware and love to get devices with more than one use. Why get a mobile phone when I can get a mobile phone that can also access the interwebz? Why get a games console when you can get a console that's also an mp3 player and so on...
I read an article the other day about how well Apple's iphone/ipod touch is doing in agglomerating many functions in one single device. Probably, other companies will follow and try to take advantage of this market trend.

What I meant was that while I love my retro games, if they're on a home console I'll always end up playing Halo...or...whatever new title I have. I don't feel that I get much use from them. Having them portable would mean I could play legendary games on the goooo~ I weridly enough play portable systems at home most of the time too....either way, it'd be a great feature.

The PS1 selection is fantastic but there's not many titles that appeal to me. America has a decent selection whereas Japan get Resi & MGS, naturally.

I know what you mean. On a home console people usually tend to play more recent games. I think I didn't play any of my collections this year.
But on a portable console ... There's something about those little things. Usually I spend more time playing a portable game after finishing it than a home console game. At least the recent ones.
Well I got mine today :D
I have to say I am seriously impressed, I take back all of my mocking statements -_-
The camera is plain fantastic, I'll be using it all the time, the effects are hilarious. I got 1000 DS Points for free when looking at the store :D So I got Warioware for free! :D

Yay, I got mine today! The GameStop I went to opened at 9, but I got there early, so I had to wait in the car (sign of courtesy, i guess). So, I just about got the first one in the store.
I have to say, this thing is AWESOME! It's not even a day old in the US and I'm enjoying this thing. My only concern is the power button. It doesn't click or make a sound when you push it, so I'm afraid I'll push it to hard. Oh, and in the US, the only colors are black and blue (no white...yet). I got it in black because I find the blue pretty obnoxious. Other than that, the DSi is cool. Can't wait to see what games will come out exclusively for it.
PS: I took the liberty to type this post on my DSi. Cool, huh?
Glad to see you're enjoying it so far :P blue sounds a pretty cool option though, mine's white because the guy screwed up my order -_- but meh, I actually like it.
MrEthernex

Blue is okay, it's just that the picture on the website made it look uglier than it really is, and it would've been nice to have white as another option. My bro (age 10) and I both got ours at the same time. I got black and he got blue. He's been playing it all day (had to charge it twice :P). He and I constantly recorded sounds, took pictures, and played WarioWare on his. I could go on about how much fun we've been having and how innovative it is, but I'm not up to typing that much.
It's fun watching me having a "seizure" on WarioWare.
Well first impressions are good I guess. Finally the DS supports my routers security settings. It also feels slightly heavier than the other DS's but that might just be me.
Accessing the shop is as slow as it was on the Wii.

No problems with my screen so far (as opposed to my DS Lite. Had to trade it in 3 times because the first two had broken pixels, and I don't like broken pixels).
Here are some improvements of the DSi over the DS Lite:
-33% faster CPU (133 MHz as compared to the DS Lite's combined 100 MHz)
-256 MB internal flash memory (as compared to the DS Lite's 0 MB)
-SD/SDHC card compatible (largest capacity: 32 GB SDHC card)
-2 VGA cameras (at an amazing 0.3 megapixel per camera!)
-12% thinner
-3.25" (8.3 cm) screens (DS Lite: 3" (7.6 cm) screens)
(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DSi)
These are just some of the improvements. Some downsides, though, are that the DSi has a shorter battery life and doesn't support GBA games.
In the end, the DSi has better game quality (faster processors, larger screens), but you'll never see this improvement on your GBA games.
Aside from some slightly reduced load times, I highly doubt you'll see the improvements on any DS games either, seeing as they weren't developed with the DSi in mind.

I just had an idea: what if we created a thread for pics that we took on our DSi's. It'll be like the "Post a pic of yourself" thread, but with more distortion. It would require an SD card and slot, but that shouldn't be hard. Just an idea.

In the end, the DSi has better game quality (faster processors, larger screens), but you'll never see this improvement on your GBA games.
Exactly who much shorter is the battery life? Nothing too diferent from the DS I hope.

Now is the DSi considered a new "system?" Are they going to make games specifically for it, because that would suck for us DSlite owners.

Now is the DSi considered a new "system?" Are they going to make games specifically for it, because that would suck for us DSlite owners.First: Yes, the DSi is a new system.
Second: I assume that Nintendo is going to make games compatible with both DS original/Lite and the DSi. :) I read something where new DS games will give DSi owners more functions, such as enable camera use for the game:
Nintendo is planning to release "enhanced game cards" that can operate on the DSi and previous console versions, and will also offer exclusive features for the DSi.If Nintendo were to make a DSi-only game, they would probably just release it as DSiWare.
If Nintendo were to make a DSi-only game, they would probably just release it as DSiWare.
I heard that they will just make the DS game normal but add in DSi features if its plugged into a DSi.

Still is fairly long and at least should last longer than the battery of the original DS. Thanks for the info.

From what I've seen of Nintendo I just expected them to shove a camera feature in every new game and call it a next generation DSi game.
My little bro is getting a DSi He says he cant wait when i first looked at the dsi i thought it would be a very good handheld console but theres 1 thing i dont like about it is the music file yes the music file it has to be in a m4a Format AKA AAC file.but overall its still a good console

Sorry about the TL;DR post (I deleted it), but I'm really pissed right now. This is how I vent. I would've f@#$'d them up, but I'm a pacifist so in my head, I was like "F@#$ you, I'm going to sleep."
EDIT 5/23/09: I purposefully deleted the pic. Felt pretty bad about it...stooped down to his level (not a good idea, btw).

I get that sort of stuff a lot when I go to places full of random people.
A friend of mine normally does annual parties at his house with around 20-20 people showing up. Try sleeping then >_<.

You just about supress the urge to smash someones head in because of a bit of light hearted ribaldry? What a pacifist.
First off, I'm uber protective of my stuff (won't let anyone touch my laptop or DSi, even family and friends).
Haha, I thought I was the only person like that! But then I have an OCD and don't let anyone touch anything in my room

But most of us pay for the stuff they end up breaking. I've had a lot of my phones broken this way.

Yeah but if you get well uppity about something people are bound to do stuff to purposefully wind you up and I doubt that DS would have ben broken anyway, it's just being a stingy get.
I think I'd rather put up with the odd broken thing than be known as a right tight arse.

Well if someone did actually bust your stuff by being an idiot then you'd expect it to be replaced. I can't imagine it being that likely though, you people need to stop hanging around with such bear fisted friends! lol.
Btw, check out this douche.

Here's the story: I went to a party yesterday (April 18), and I decided to bring along my DSi. First off, I'm uber protective of my stuff (won't let anyone touch my laptop or DSi, even family and friends). Second, it wasn't stolen, so relax. Anyway, I spent the night over there with the douche pictured above and the douche who took the pic (not picture, duh). It was about 1 AM, and I was getting tired. The douche brothers started to dick around and threatened me to stay awake with them, saying that they'll dick around with my DSi if I fell asleep. Eventually, I dozed off, and the picture above is the result. Luckily, they didn't f@#$ it up, but it still kinda ticked me off. I had to sleep with it in my pocket to make sure they didn't get a hold of it (very uncomfortable, btw). "Some friends" my ass.
Sorry about the TL;DR post, but I'm really pissed right now. This is how I vent. I would've f@#$'d them up, but I'm a pacifist (the opposition to war or violence as a means of settling disputes or gaining advantage. thanks, wikipedia) so in my head, I was like "F@#$ you, I'm going to sleep."
Looking at that picture makes me think someone should start a DSi picture thread so we can all sho each other all the messed up pictures we have all taken.

And sorry for ranting previously. I was kinda pissed, but now I'm better. :)

I think the best thing to do is not take a valuable toy round to paces you're likely to get shit faced in the first palce. I think I've already mentioned it before, but I took my DS out on the lash once and it took a plunge down a toilet, with Ketsui in it 'n' all! Game still works, thank god, but the console has never been the same again..

Yeah, I learned my lesson. From now on, my DSi is staying at home (with the exceptions of road trips).
EDIT 5/5/09: Feel pretty bad about getting angry over a friend's action. I'm pretty uptight about the small things that annoy me. It's just something that I need to overcome. Btw, I'm still friends with the guy pictured. He still annoys me about other crap, but I usually ignore him.
Sooo...
Where's my Gameboy Virtual Console?
All the PAL Nintendo store has thus far is a popstar game, a soccer game, a bunch of brain games and alarm clocks.
Welcome to the world of Nintendo, Rayne. I do hope you weren't expecting them to release anything half decent on your useful feature deprived DSi, were you?
Not within the first few months, no ;)
I had however, expected a few leaks, a few announcements, at least some attempt to make use of the DSi.
I've got Asphalt 4 Elite Racing from the DSi Shop and its a pretty good racer but I'm keeping an eye out for Mighty Flip Champs as I've heard really good things about that.

fix'd that for you.
Least you have, um, Electroplankton to look forward to? Only game I got off of DSiWare was Dr. Mario.

Why? that has no two player. and Electroplankton is that like the whole game or just parts of it for download?

Because I had like 1000 points burning a hole in my wallet, also I don't really care much about two player as I never played the original multiplayer anyway.
I believe it's just parts for download for Electroplankton, which I'd say works out nicely as last time I looked for it the game was crazy expensive still and this way I can just download the good uh apps from it.
I got Dr Mario, forgot about that! It's actually not a bad game, though I got it with my free points ;)
Rek...what did you actually fix? XD
Surely it wouldn't be hard to make the connection?
Dur...old mario....old pokemon...wild fanbase...800 points each....cha ching!

That filthy Yank word you used.
DSiWare is kinda like the Apple App store only with no support and crazy high prices. The feature itself seems to be completely ignored and I almost forgot it even existed.
Edit: Needs to have Peggle before I can take it seriously.

Still waiting for GB games, too. I barely check the store. I just go straight to playing games or f'ing with pictures.
Speaking of which, are we gonna start a DSi Picture thread soon?

I only have, like, 5 pics on mine. XD I'll start taking more and draw on 'em.
I got a DS, two DS Lite, but no DSi yet.
I think I'll buy the DSi XL as soon as it comes out.
As for the "old" (-_-) DSi... I couldn't care less, it's just a DS Lite without a GBA slot :(
 You say you couldn't care less for the DSi, as it's a DS Lite without the GBA slot, but you're going to get a DSi XL, even though it's a DS Lite without the GBA slot but with bigger screens...

Personally, I thought that the DSi XL / LL was a ridiculous idea, but I can understand why they made it, though. With senior citizens or such being the target audience, the screens are bigger so it's easier to see, and there's a second larger stylus so it is easier to grip (and large ears for so the better to hear you with :P).
In retrospect, the DSi was way too overhyped. I was just fine with my DS Lite, but I fell to temptation and my flaw of having to be "up to date" and got the DSi. Really, if I had stuck with my Lite, I wouldn't be missing out on much and I would be able to play GBA games (too bad I didn't have any). It must have been the astonishing 0.3 megapixel cameras and SD slot that got me. XD
 You say you couldn't care less for the DSi, as it's a DS Lite without the GBA slot, but you're going to get a DSi XL, even though it's a DS Lite without the GBA slot but with bigger screens...Exactly; for me, the DS is just another home console, and it's actually better than the Wii and sometimes the 360.
So, if I can have the same hardware with bigger screens (alas, no GBA slot but I will still have my GBA and my DS Lite) I'm in, because I will play it at home like always.
The DSi, on the other hand, is just a DS Lite with slightly bigger screens, without a GBA slot and, well, it seems even less useful than the XL to me.
edit. The problem with the lack of the GBA Slot is no rumble pack and no extra modes in games that require a connection between DS and GBA. :/
