View Full Version : Do you think that the Saturn can be ported to the VC on Wii?
Well, i was asking myself, if the Wii's VC can have N64 games, then why don't make a contact with SEGA to add the Sega Saturn as a System?, i might sound stupid or like mister Rich-ie, but... I could pay 2000 wii points just for Burning Rangers or NiGHTS into dreams...!
This is answered constantly, it can't because of SEGAs crazy hardware choice is hard to emulate, which is exactly what VC is a, a collection of emulators and roms.
There was also talk of the games file size, which I guess since most were CD are pretty big, would A) be impossible due to the Wii's storage problem and B) Who would really want to download anything large over Nintendo's slow ass wi-fi service?
However I think someone said size was not the case.
You should really have searched, even if this topic doesn't have it's own thread, it has been mentioned in several.
Pretty much what Reknoc said, but also because there's no demand for it.
I mean the Saturn had well...no great games, none that your non-sega fan would name, like some Dreamcast games have been done (Soul Calibur) but yeah...no demand for Saturn

Sometimes the things you say amaze me. You basically saying sega fans don't like saturn? What you smoking boy? Dissing saturn on a sega fan site it's like akin to flaming.

Is that aimed at me? I can't tell ^__^"
I said your average Non-Sega fan, everyone knows about mario on the N64, or Sonic on the Mega Drive, the Saturn didn't have a massive title that people still talk about today....Yes NiGHTS was amazing, but never mainstream..

Then forgive me. FOOORRRGIIIIIIVEEEE MEEEEEEEEEEEEE ARGHHHHHHHHH
I get defensive and stupid with the saturn. There's loads of great games on there but your right I don't know how well they would actually would sell if they could re-release them.

The Saturn just didn't have the (insert good word here) factor or the real big ass games that make people sit back and remember it for something. It's a shame really as there are a lot of good titles on it but aren't as big as any of that of the Mega Drive ones.

One very good reason why the Saturn and the Mega CD games weren't ported, size, simple as that, perhaps when the Wii gets the storage problem solved we'll get Saturn games, Sonic CD, a basic 2d game takes up 190mb! Think what Burning Rangers would take up?

Nintendo fans would be all too happy to get their greasy hands on some of the Saturn's classic games. Stuff like Megamix, Burning Rangers, Die Hard Arcade, Sega Rally and Guardian Heroes were just as good as their equivalents on the rivals consoles at the time but didn't have the audience to appreciate them that Mario 64 and Ridge Racer etc did.

Oh god, could you imagine downloading 190mbs over Nintendo Wi-fi? It was bad enough when I downloaded Lylat Wars.

I'm just guessing but the majority of Saturn games probably go around the 600mb mark, where the hell would you put those games? Look at Panzer Dragoon Saga, over 2000mb!
You guys really know nothing of modern compression rates do you, an besides, while they say it's hard to emulate the Saturn hardware, it really isn't. No one trys hard enough.

Have to admit I think that maybe the case on hindsight, there are emulators out there now that work if you tinker around enough and there just made by bedroom geeks. I think if sega got in on the act I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Maybe it is a case of them just not finding it economically viable?
My guess is that Saturn game swould be better suited to the 360 or PS3 because of the bigger hard drive they have.

Well, I downloaded a Saturn ROM once (Sonic Jam) and it was 200MB. So that's somewhere around the size mark.About 2 of those and your Wii would die I think. Download that over the Wii's net and you'd be there for a while...
I won't mind to wait two hours for just playing Nights or Burning Rangers^^

I wouldn't either as I'm quite tolerant but it would still eat away the Wii's memory.

Or get some alternative to SD cards that the Wii can use as extra memory.
Or get some alternative to SD cards that the Wii can use as extra memory.
Which will never happen but the best Nintendo can do is let us run stuff straght off the SD card.
However looking at it another way VC has got some TurboGrafx CD games up there and I got one called Gate of Thunder and since it came out on CD format my guess is that the publishers may have used some kind of compression to squeaze the file size down, maybe the same can be said for Saturn games but we may never know.

Why is Metal Slug still circa 200MB then? But I do like the idea of a 'Sonic Team' compilation or 'AM2' compilation.

The idea of a CD with the best games sounds good, but also i think it is possible the ports, after all, if SEGA gave the saturn informatiom to Nintendo, they may make it, with all this tecnology we have now!

Sega Saturn games would be a great idea because people like me who missed out on the Saturn because their Dad wanted a PlayStation have probably only played Sonic R (On P.C.). But There are a few other things Nintendo need to add first, like GameBoy & GameBoy Colour. But yes, Sega Saturn games should be added to the Virtual Console.

Because someone does not like to buy stuff off ebay does not make it harder to do than buy from this service though, that is a personal choice, not too mention the fact there are other sites that sell retro stuff. It is not particularly hard or expensive to buy a Saturn if you really want one. Moaning on the interent that Saturn games should be on the Wii probably takes about the same amount of effort as tracking one down.

Except the fact that the 'console' is free on Virtual Console, I didn't pay £200 for a Neo Geo and i'm thankful it's on VC so I can play some of the games without having to dish out on a console which pads will eventually ware out on and are no longer available to buy.

Saturns are a bit harder to acquire than Wiis. Wii are in shops, but Saturns are not.
I have read almost every opinion and it's good, and please, Killer french bread, be more cool and don't insult people here. I am another one that would love to have played a Saturn, but I do not have a credit card, Paypal or other things like that to buy on the Internet. Also, I am now not-so-wealthy to pay 100 dollars for a console, game, control, and cables...
And still, this is just a forum, I mean, come on, SEGA will not notice this forum and say "We will put the Saturn!". We are just giving our ideas to a site, that's all.

I say, no.
It wolud be more probable for SEGA to release it on a compilation disc. "SEGA Saturn Classics" or something along those lines.
Sadly, I wish that one of those things happened. I mean, we fans could be happy, and they would have more money with works that they have previously done. They just need to get the data to a CD, and Presto!: SEGA Saturn Classics!!!
Still, it could be cool to have on a channel on your Wii XD.

Look I just calmed this thread down so can we keep it back on track?
Cheers guys.
Well, I was just saying about the Wii because it's the system I own :D, but I could mean to be on any console, or if they release the CD idea, I think it could end on all the consoles, after all, it "looks like SEGA can only do that these days..."
I thinks this brings up all the talk of storage space on the Wii, and how newer firmware will have to allow things like Flash Drives, and Portable HDDs. They may also have to allow bigger SD cards. I would love to be able to play Saturn games, or more likely Sega CD games, on my Wii. And some one earlier brought up how a ROM was about 200MB, well thats pretty big for a ROM but more importantly the size all depends on the type of file encoding that the emulator needs to be able to understand it. The one on the Wii makes ROM sizes very small, for instance NES games are only take about a minute or two to download on a average DSL connection because they're so tiny.

Yeah. Im not even bothered what format they release it on but I just really wanna see a saturn collection.
Perhaps the Saturn is really hard to emulate? *doesn't have a clue*
The upcoming Sega collection on PS3/360 could be the game of the year, seriously the HD DVD/Blu Ray DVD's are massive, it wouldn't kill them to port Saturn games to it, and DC games (if Soul Calibur is on the Live arcade, then why not put some on the collection?)

I'm no expert but as far as I know there is an issue in emulating the Saturn's audio.
To be honest if it were possible it would have been done an absolute age ago.
Terrible shame games like Burning Rangers, Guardian Heroes and Deep Fear will never be played again. Terrible shame.

I think if bedroom coders can make emulators that will run saturn games basically perfect on your pc im sure sega themselves could manage to do it.
Sherlock
14-01-2009, 11:53
Seen from the possibilities: No.
And there are 2 reasons why it won't happen:
The Saturn ROMs are too big for the Wii's file storage. You could maybe have 1 if anything at all.
The Saturn is pretty much the strongest machine from that generation, I have my doubts that the Wii would be able to display that correctly while running the emulator.
Seen as I would like to: Yes.
The Saturn has some great overlooked games. Mostly from Sega themselves because hardly anyone else developed games for the Saturn.
Well, that's that.
richarddavies
14-01-2009, 12:24
Yeah I agree that it couldn't really be on the wii. I don't see it having much of a problem running a saturn game though spec wise be honest. The fact it can run a game like galaxy fine but struggle with Radiant silvergun or something seems strange to me. Emulator or not.
EDIT: Thinking about it im not even sure if when a company do a "classics collection" they use an emulator or whether they just re-do the source code so the game will run on the hardware itself. I actually really don't know.
Sherlock
14-01-2009, 12:30
That's a difference, though, as Galaxy is a program written specifically for the specs of the Wii.
The emulators take a lot of power from a processor, because they have to create the environment of what the console they are emulating takes quite a lot.
For more "primitive" technology like NES or SNES that's easily to be done, however, when it turns 3D, it's hard.
I have a computer with better processor and graphic card etc. than the PSX, yet I have trouble emulating PSX games - not with all, but with a lot of them.
As said, creating the environment of what console X is capable of through an emulator takes a lot of processing power. That's why the Saturn won't be on the Wii - setting up the environment is just too complicated. Not to mention the game sizes.
@ your Edit you made while I was writing:
If the company creates a remake or a port, they alter the source code so it fits the specs of the console they're porting to. The VC stuff is pretty much unaltered.

That would explain the sound issues on some of the Mega Drive and NES games...
I think what SEGA should do if they wanted to do a Saturn collection is re-do the source code of the games so that it runs on the host systems perfectly. I remember reading when SEGA did the SEGA AGES Fantasy Zone Complete Collection for the PS2 the small 3rd party developer SEGA hired to do the ports took the games code and re-drew every sprite and graphic and tweaked the code to run specifically on the PS2 which from what I’ve heard is an arcade perfect port with no use of an emulator. Its not the first time this sort of thing has happened if I remember correctly Irem did the same thing when they ported R-Type 1 & 2 to the Playstation for the R-Types pack.
But there is a down side to this as tweaking code to run on different systems takes a lot of time to do so the quick way out is to use an emulator.
That would explain the sound issues on some of the Mega Drive and NES games...
I’ve not really noticed but I do know some of the sounds from Mega Drive Collection on the PSP has some sound issues.
