View Full Version : PS3: System Software Update 1.54

So what are you thoughts on today's PS3 update (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates)? Its an interesting twist on the whole web cam thing...
Why? Unlike Microsoft, you can actually use any UVC compliant web camera instead only being able to use the XBOX Live Vision (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xboxlivevision/) camera from Microsoft.
This brought up a few questions for myself. I own a Creative WebCam Live! Ultra (http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=218&subcategory=219&product=10451). Does it work? I installed the update and sadly, no. It didn't detect my device.
If I had a XBOX Live Vision camera, I'd test it too, but I doubt it would work. Would be incredibly funny if it did though.
So are any of these so called UVC compliant cameras? Yes. Logitech was nice enough to post a chart of their cameras (http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5336) including a column for UVC compliance.
It will be interesting to see how Sony uses web camera technology in their future titles. Microsoft has thus far released games like UNO (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/u/unolivearcadexbox360/default.htm) and Totem Ball (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/t/totemballxboxlivearcade/default.htm) using the XBOX Live Vision camera. Perhaps we might see SEGA Superstars (http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=segasuperstars&lid=gp_segasuperstars&lpos=allgamelist_title) 2? Only time will tell.

You're so lucky. I wish I had a PS3, not for the games, just to have one.

Honestly? I don't care, and neither should anyone in Europe. The way we have been treated by Sony is nothing short of disgraceful, and if they sell even one PS3 in Europe, it's one too many.
a girl once told my friend that an orgasm is like a plesurable pain. sony is a plesurble pain:lol:

Personally, with the prices Sony's charging for it, I'm surprised they are selling any at all!

They only sold one to me 'cause I wanted Sonic '06 on the best hardware it could be on. Too bad they must have crappy development tools since it runs worse on the PS3 when compared to the 360 version (I have both).

Yeah, and I'm willing to bet that PS3 will end up being Sony's first monumental failure in games.

Sadly I think it already is. Personally from what I read about its inner workings--they spent too much time worrying about people pirating games and less time on making the system programmer friendly.
I can already see (if Sony doesn't throw in the towel) the jokes for the PS4 launch... "Yeah, I went down to my local game store wearing a bullet-proof vest..." The PS3 launch is probably one of the worst I've ever known of for any console. I think the only people happy are those playing PS2 games on it and haven't learned the ways of the Wii or XBOX 360 yet.

during the brief time my cousin had his 360 at my house (he sold it to get an engagement ring for his now ex-fiancee) I had tried it out and thought "This is a hell of a lot more comfortable than playing with a playstation controller". As for the Wii, I wouldn't doubt that it would be a lot of fun to play.

Yeah the PS3 SixAxis controller made three mistakes (IMO).
They kept the PS2 layout and so the left analog stick is still farther away from your left thumb making it less comfortable to play games that require it constantly (i.e. Sonic).
They took out rumble. I can see this as a sticking point for battery life, but 360 has it and I don't find my batteries dying because of it.
They didn't make the battery replaceable. Yeah you heard me right. Just dumb. Now on the up side, the controller is ultra-light and you don't have to spend extra money to get a rechargeable battery pack and charger as you can charge the controllers by hooking them to the console with a USB A to B cable. Too bad the system has to be on to charge. :( In the event your SixAxis batteries do die permanently (won't recharge anymore), it is not destine for the junk pile unless you can't tolerate using it tethered via USB...
And don't get me started on controller annoyances within the PS3 OS...

I guess it's good that I didn't get a ps3 then as from what I'm hearing, it's a piece of junk.

Thats a joke for us in europe.......they have taken backwards compatability out. No 'emotion engine' for us. We have to make do with PS2 emulation........cheers sony.

Thats the first I heard of that... Just did some reading up on it and it sounds like they aren't taking it out... They are just going to make it software based instead of hardware based to reduce cost. As far as I'm concerned, the US/Japan models cost so much because you're buying a PS2 and 3 at the same time.
I guess Sony will tell us how badly games are impacted on March 23 (http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/). I'm not keeping my hopes up. Even if Europe got a near equivalently experience to the US/Japan units--its still pretty disappointing.

Hot off the press today (http://immr.client.shareholder.com/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=232152)... Looks like that lawsuit has come to an end and rumble is coming back. Geeze. I didn't even realize there was a lawsuit involved.

Interesting then that its still the same price to the consumer? (And at £425, the UK is the most expensive place to get one - and you get a 'less complete' console!)

I'm not sure if its going to be a fair comparison. Looks like the UK is getting screwed on Windows Vista too. Prices are near double (http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/VistaOvercharge/) the US cost. Just comparing what the UK pays (£313.48) for Vista Ultimate full verus what the US pays (approx £193.81) both from Amazon.com companies, its pretty clear something is wrong. Are there some ridiculously import/export taxes going on here or are US/Japan based companies just price gouging? I didn't even know this was going on until I went to buy Vista online last month.
