Welcome to Septembers rather belated game the month, sorry it was late, I was a bit late in trying to source a game play video for it!
This month it's the excellent Sonic The Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive, released in 1992. Click Here (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/../gotm.php) to read the feature, and check out the gameplay video and more! Also a special thanks to ResidentSD for writing the feature for me!
This great game has also been recently released on XBOX Live Arcade, so if you have a 360 and no longer own Sonic 2, get it!

Did you ever play Sonic The Hedgehog 2? Did you like it and what are your memories, and do you still play it? Discuss this month's Game of the Month here!

Still play it, Love it and my memories are probably the amount of times it took me to do death egg zone for the first time.

Loved the game and still play it ... On the Mega Drive, on the Gamecube and on the PS2. Unfornately I'm unable to play it on the Sega Saturn because my copy of Sonic Jam got damaged beyond repair. One of the best games ever.

I think Sonic 2 is on of those games that will never get boring, or worse, no matter how old it becomes. It truly is a timeless game, and the best of a generation. I've played it for 15 years since launch to completion, I wonder how many times I've completed it, thousands of times? I can't begin to imagine how many times I've seen those credits...

So, Sonic 2 eh? First Sonic game I ever played, of course, this means later when i tried Sonic 1, it lacked the spin dash feature but hey we're talking about Sonic 2 here aren't we?
So, what did I enjoy about this game? or rather, what do I still, even after 15 years, enjoy about this game?
Well, people may call it short and repetitive compared to game-play nowadays but it has something games these days lack. Simplicity.
The game is simple, enjoyable, a great time-killer.
Get from point A (level beginning) to Point B (End signpost) It's that simple.
I loved everything in this game, level design, boss design, music, it all works in together perfectly.
The levels aren't long, but they're long enough to kill time. They're not overly complicated which is what makes them enjoyable to me, especially, when you're passing through them with you're blue blur of a hedgehog with funky synth music in the background. Who can honestly say they dislike a good bit of Emerald Hill Zone music eh?
So, character choice of course is limited to 2 character, but back then that was a lot to think, even these days, having more than 2 playable characters over complicates it which is why i stick with Sonic 2
So, memories of this game...
I guess...the memories that really stick out for me...is when i first played it, sure i died about 100 times in a row, but it's the fact, I was playing this...hedgehog, this character, it had a name, it looked cool, it could do things that PEOPLE couldn't therefor it was awesome so I didn't care the fact I could control his every move made me happy.
Another couple of memories of course are, completing the game for the first time, and then completing it with all emeralds.
Those 3 memories...are the most prominent i can remember, from ever playing a video game.
So there, that's my Sonic 2 view
~JJ
Oh Sonic 2. The love I have for you, which sadly is eclipsed by Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
My memory is actually somewhat hazy, it's either Sonic 1, or Sonic 2 I had on the MD first. I do believe it's Sonic 2, but one can never be sure, since this was going back 12 years or so.
Either way, Sonic 2 was an amazing little game. I preferred it to Sonic 1, mainly because the levels never dragged on, as opposed to Sonic 1, which felt a little stretched out, with 3 acts.
Having 10 Zones, with 2 acts, made more sense to me then 6 Zones with 3 acts. Made it feel fresh every 5-10 mins, and then the excitment mounting as I got further in. Made it to Oil Ocean, rather long, windy, and somewhat slippert. Ooh, made it to Metropolis, wait MORE?..Sky Chase, surely approaching the end? Wing Fortress? Well, i suppose you can't end a Sonic game with a simple level like Sky Chase..so come on, the end must be now...EH, Death Egg? Some form of Sonic? Eh? SHIT, DEAD. No rings.
Right, beat Sonic robot dude (Silver Sonic), now do I get to see the ending? Eggman is running, oh come on, catch up, FUCK, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT. Come on then bitch, bring it. Shit, dead. That thing has spiky claws.
Right, trounced Silver Sonic, back again. Watch out for the claws....the claws, right, think i've got a strategy, ok, now..easily does it..oh god come on, that's the 12th hit already, when the hell..ah, there we go, death kthx.
Ending..ooh, Tails isn't dead. But wait, what's going on with Sonic? Oh, woah, Super Sonic is back, floating, reuniting. Awesome!
SUPER POSE HYPER GO!
And er, that's what I vaguely remember from the first time I went through the whole thing. About a week after getting it I think.
Great choice of game, while others prefer the later one's Sonic 2 will always be a classic to me and nearly untouchable. Super Sonic, Metal Sonic (Metallix depending if you read the comics I did as a child ^_^), the Death Egg. To me this game still has a lot to offer even in this day and age of "amazing" graphics and [no?] gameplay! The 2 player split screen gave me hours of enjoyment as I wiped out anyone who dared to step up to me!
Heh, something i never mentioned in my post was the 2 player screen, mainly because...I dunno, I guess it never really appealled to me. Sure. Me and my best friend played it a lot but overall I prefered the main game over the 2 player split-screen
We sorta didn't bother with it really, it felt a bit shallow, what with only 3 Zones.
Played other games for mulitplayer, Sonic 2 was something I went alone, lol.

Multiplayer mode on Sonic 2 should have more Zones ... But the pleasure of the game is going through single player mode, anyway ...
game for like 3 hours yesterday trying to complete it! great game though, even if it does pale slightly in comparison to sonic3 & knuckles^_^

Ever played the special stage with Sonic & Tails? With the one player he'll lag behind you as you know. But if your like me and you have a friend, one can play tails in the Special Stage. It's a real co-op effort! You can be Super Sonic just before the Chemical Zone...bliss!

Well, guess it's my turn!
It all started in 1992, when I turned 8 years old. What's this?? Another Sonic game? Oh, joy of joys!!! Having played Sonic 1 almost everyday, I was curious to see what SEGA could change in this new game.
For me, besides the excelent soundtrack, awesome levels (and the diversity of levels) and bosses, it was the 2 player cooperative mode. Yes, me and my friends all loved to play Sonic 1, but when one was playing, the other ones were just watching. Now, it was possible to have two people playing the same levels and helping each other out.
And, man, did I love playing with Tails while killing all the badnicks and helping Sonic get through the levels!
Just to sum it up, it IS (not was) a great game worth playing and replaying, just like I do almost every week, especially on the Wii.
And I also had a rough time getting through Eggman's final mech... I can tell you it was a looong night!
Heh, after all this Sonic 2 talk I feel like picking up my keyboard (since my dad got rid of my MegaDrive ;.; ) and emulating my way to Sonic 2 glory

Try getting a console version of it. PC emulation doesn't make it justice.

But it's fun to play the VS mode online anyway. Short but fun.
But I agree. Sonic 2 is a console gem not a PC game.

I've played this recently. Truth be told, that's when i got it. I've always had Sonic 1 and Sonic 3/K but not sonic 2. First thing i did with it was connect it with knuckles and made a play through with him. I don't know why, but i thought knuckles would look different that he did on Sonic 3. eh....

Hey guys!
Sonic 2 for the Mega Drive wasn't my first Sonic game. That was Sonic 1 for the Master System.
What can I say...? Words cannot describe how great Sonic 2 is.
Like Kool Chao said, Sonic 2...
... IS (not was) a great game worth playing and replaying, just like I do almost every week, especially on the Wii.
I have Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive (still), on the PlayStation 2 in the form of Sonic Mega Collection Plus, on my Wii and on my brother's Xbox 360!
I haven't yet played online on the Xbox 360 but I would like to.
I enjoy the gameplay, finding things hidden out of sight and the background music. I enjoy the music so much that I am now part of a growing network (not quite released yet) of people who notate the music in score and in guitar tabs. One person, who actually is a member of this message board, has been lucky enough to try my tabs, all of which are Sonic 2 music!
Stay tuned, watch this space and you may too be able to play along to the wonderful music that Sonic 2 contains.

I've seen some stuff off of you tube for it... looked interesting, but looked way to easy to beat the final boss with Knuckles... not sure if they used hacks or not... but it definitely looks to easy.

Sadly they don't show the entire battle. They skip over a little.

I'm guessing you haven't been there before in Sonic 2. The part they skipped over was pretty much just Eggman running into the giant egg robot. Almost every single thing done in that video by Knuckles could also have been done by Sonic. He did a glide at the end of the metal Sonic battle that probably could have just as easily been an extra bounce by Sonic if it was required at all (didn't look like it was). The key in the technique is exploiting the spin dash and times of invincibility, not Knuckles. ;)
