Welcome to Octobers rather late (...again, sorry!) game the month.
This month it's the excellent Sega Rally Championship for the Arcade, with ports on the Sega Saturn, PC and PS2, first released in 1995. Click Here (http://www.radiosega.net/gotm.php) to read the feature, and check out the gameplay video and more! Also a special thanks to ResidentSD for writing the feature for me!
Don't forget about the brand new Sega Rally recently released for the 360, PS3 and PC which is fantastic, but will never compare to the first!

Did you ever play Sega Rally? Did you like it and what are your memories, and do you still play it? Discuss this month's Game of the Month here!

I must say I never played any of the ports but I did enjoy some time playing the original in the Arcade. Great gameplay, an example of what a fun, arcade racer should be like.
I'm not much of a fan of driving games but SEGA Rally Championship (and Daytona and Metropolis: Street Racer) is an exception.
I mostly remember playing it against my friends a few years ago and having lots of fun!

Sega Rally was one of the two racing games I played on the Saturn (the other was Sonic R). Not being a fan of racing games I spent a surprising amount of time with this game. About memories ... I think the best memory I have was when I finally beat the Forest course. Sadly I don't have my copy of the game anymore, but I'm considering tracking one down.
Ah I remember this, sitting down in front of the TV with my brand new Saturn, listening to my newest album (Bryan Adams - Unplugged), my brother had just got an N64 with Mario kart for christmas. I played this game for hours on end over and over, always the Celica GT4. Annoying everyone with the "Turn Around" as I turned the car around to slide it about the desert course. Trying to beat my fastest times on it. Very fond memories of this game, rightly the best SEGA game ever released aside from Sonic. It had everything, handling, graphics, music, who can forget the the "SEGA Rally Championship" intro as you press start to bring up the main menu. Or when you complete a course with "Fiiiiiiinish!" Incredible game and one of my favourite SEGA games ever released. ^_^
I never played the Saturn version but I remember the good times I had playing this in the arcade with my friends back in 95. Good times:)

Ya gotta love that soundtrack!
I have a few much-loved racing games, but this will always me the tops - got it with a load of other games and of course a Sega Saturn at Christmas one year. The awesome "Game over, yeeeah!" used to really pish me off, 'cause it was like a slap in the face after you lost. :P
Many people fault Sega Rally because the handling made them slide all over the place, but for me, it was all about hitting every wall in sight. And getting better over time, of course.
it was all about hitting every wall in sight. And getting better over time, of course.
I used to do that all the time till I got the codes that unlocked the AM teams ghost cars, learned my lines from them, ended up hitting 52 seconds and under on the Desert course with the Celica, sat there for hours playing it. :P
Man I love this game!! I played it for hours when it was released and
I still think it's one of the best if not the best racing game ever made.:)
The small amount of tracks also meant that you could learn every
single shortcut on the roads and getting better and better lap
times.
I own every single Sega rally game released and I still think the original Sega Rally is king of the hill, even beating the new release on 360 and PS3 on playability!
Maybe it's just me that is too much of a retro gamer dreaming of days gone by. :)

If you still play and love it mate it's still in date. Games don't have a use by or sell by date. They're good to go if they still entertain. Only when they fail to keep you are they "stale". ^_^
I love this game very much. My favourite car has to be the Lancia Delta because I like the looks of it and its way better than Toyota.

I have SEGA Rally Championship 2 for Dreamcast, and play it whenever I can. They say that practice makes perfect, but playing the damn thing night and day doesn't seem to make me any better...

I wouldn't waste too much time on it if you can get the original or the 360 version. Both of those are much better.

This game, in almost every aspect, has no equal, at least for the time. There are better racers these days, but of all the retro systems, the Saturn got it right with this lil' guy.
The graphics still impress me today, with the well-built car models, that amazing light tunnel in the Forest stage, the overall realism of the game, it still makes me feel bright inside. Dang, that light tunnel is one of the best ever in a racing game, beaten only by the one in Gran Turismo..or maybe its the other way around. The music is certainly up to Sega standards, nothing too special, but still very memorable and hard to forget. One thing you can't forget, however, is "GAME OVER, YEAAAAAAAAAAH!" Nothing can beat that.
Now, the gameplay. This racer is bit twitchy with the 3D pad, at least for me, but it is still a heaven to play. The differing terrain and how it would affect your car's performance and drift really set the standard for rally games, and it goes to show why Colin McRae Rally chose a very good influence. The cars are, overall, fun to drive and look splendid in the process. The ability to tune and customize your car, on the other hand, can be good and bad, depending on if you know what you're doing. It certainly adds more depth. And how could you forget those 3 (well..4) courses? Desert is very fitting, with a crudload of mud, and then some dirt road for a change. Forest has some amazing physics, more mud and, before that, an amazing light-tunnel. You just can't go wrong with that! And it still retains a fair bit of challenge, especially at the hairpin. Mountain is, overall, a tough, yet excellent course, and I especially love how the town part was rendered.
And just when you'd think it was over..BOOM! Assuming you did well, you move on to the nails-hard Lake stage, which most people could only hope to beat (like me). Though you're unlikely to win (maybe I did win, actually), you'll still that awesome music and that awesome feel you get from driving around a lakefront. It works like magic.
This game, in many ways, is magic and is hard not to go wrong with. Those who don't have this game are missing out pretty badly.
