Sega Saturn - 1997
In recent times, there has been an explosion in collections of classic games being released for newer consoles. The Sonic games have not missed out on this with the Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection packages bringing classic Sonic games to a brand new audience. However, the greatest Sonic compilation was actually released ten years ago.

Sonic Jam, released in 1997 on the SEGA Saturn, brings together Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles (complete with all three lock on options). These are available in their original forms or in two new difficulty modes which add or take away elements to make the game easier or more difficult to play. Also, you can use Sonic's spin dash mode in the original Sonic the Hedgehog (spin dash debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2).

Normally that's where retro collections end, but Sonic Jam had something unique. Sonic Jam featured a 3D area called Sonic World, where gamers could access virtual museums containing Sonic history, music, art, animation and advertisements. Not only that, but Sonic World also features ring collection challenges. Bearing in mind the cancellation of Sonic X-Treme, this is as close as gamers got to experiencing Sonic in a 3D platformer on the Saturn.

As a retro compilation, it's a fantastic way of experiencing the first four Sonic platform games that were released on the Mega Drive. However, you really should play it for Sonic World. Experience the history of Sonic and see what Sonic X-Treme could have been like...
