Sounds like you've got a slightly arse controller, as I've always used the ones with the Amiga-esque plugs and they've been responsive without being too loose.

Always hated the smaller, narrower official 6-button ones, though. Competition Pro made six-button Mega Drive pads (with turbo switches!) that were identical in form, d-pad and buttons to the official-3. Ace.
Not totally teetotal.

Actually I have used the Taiwan made ones before years ago and I recall they felt the same. I just didn't notice they were different until I had both versions side by side.
