MMORPG's

Post by Tru »

How many of you play MMORPG's, and what games do you play?

Have you played some in the past and gave them up for whatever reason? Do you think they're worth the time and money, or destroy lives and souls? Discuss!

I've played a wide variety of MMORPG's over the years including Final Fantasy 11, City of Heroes/Villains, RF Online, Guild Wars, some free ones like Florensia, andother non-MMO RPG's like the Phantasy Star Online series, namely Blue Burst and Phantasy Star Universe, which took up a few years of my life. I have tried WoW for a month trial with some old friends; I got bored of it and stopped playing after my trial, but my friends became addicted and played it for months afterwards.

One MMO I had been looking forward to for a long time was Aion: The Tower of Eterntity, which I religiously played during the beta's and even the Chinese beta, buying it on launch. I was really involved with it, until I started getting bored with my guild and the annoying group quests which took ages just to organise, so when Star Trek Online came about, I started playing that instead.

I really liked Star Trek Online because it was more casual and it meant I could pick it up for short bursts of gameplay and not feel like I had to pour hours into it in order to feel like I was achieving something. I actually bought a year subscription, which was probably a bad idea, although I still missed Aion and intended to return to it.

Then my computer broke in April, and has been broken ever since :(

I still miss Star Trek and Aion; my Star Trek account is still active, but because I cancelled my Aion sub, my high level character was deleted, and now I'm feeling kinda disheartened to continue, when my computer eventually gets fixed :\

I'm still not sure what I feel about MMO's. What about you guys?

They're all totally lame.

Completely out-dated graphics - this issue is almost never fixed as MMO's are so terrified of alienating their user base with a sequel.

Terrible, Terrible gameplay mechanics - Fetch this many of these and bring them back to me. Thank you. Now kill this many of these and report back. Great. Now fetch this many of that, this many of those and combine them to make this and bring it back to me. Excitement she wrote...

Ironically I spent the past few days looking for one to play and you know, I can't find a single one that really interests me.

I started to play Mana World, but then stopped a week after I started. It bored me to death.

I used to play WoW and probably will again after watching a Cataclysm beta quick look. Played abit of Ragnarok Online aswell, it's shit and basic as all fuck but the soundtrack is awesome, essentialy just used it to talk to a mate while we did mindless grinding and listened to the ace music.

Guildwars is easily by far my favourite, the structure allowed it to be more story focused and the combat was alright. Guildwars 2 will probably be the breaking point for getting a new computer.

Edit: Oh yeah, natually I've played Shin Megami Tensei Imagine. It's pretty good.

I know what you mean, I spent a while looking for a different MMO, which is why I settled on Aion and Star Trek. Aion for the flying and flight-based combat, and Star Trek for the universe as well as the ship combat, which is actually really well done.

Most of the problems with what you've mentioned in regards to gameplay mechanics and questing are found in a lot of single player RPG's though, do you enjoy normal RPG's more, or less?

I think the problem with graphics is then being PC based, although some, like Aion, are getting graphical updates in the future.

Actually, this reminds me of Guild Wars 2. From the news that I have gathered around, it sounds like they're really trying to reinvent the MMO experience, so it may be worth keeping an eye on!

There isn't enough role-playing. It's more like Massively Multplayer Press A A Lot.

See, I like my story, and I like my character development, which is why I used to go on MUCKs, which were basically multiplayer text adventures where you write a paragraph each or whatever - I'm still on one, but they've almost died out and tend to only have a handful of members.

But then World of Warcraft showed up. "BECOME YOUR CHARACTER" and all that. Ooh, that sounds good. Oh, wait, it's just Record of Lodoss War, a basic hit-something-for-cash thing.

Then City of Heroes showed up. "BE A HERO, ADORED BY ALL, OR A DREADED VILLAIN". Great! OH WAIT IT'S MORE RUNNING AROUND HITTING THINGS.

DC Universe Online has my hopes up just a little, but I know it shouldn't. You could start off as just some guy in Manhattan, when all of a sudden, you're caught in the middle of a shootout between Batman and the Joker's goons. Will Batman save you, leading you one way, or will you end up on the Joker's side? And I'm not talking a shitty Fable "press one for good or two for evil" either. Character development.

Obviously it'll come down to PRESS A FOR HEAT VISION though.

You could try the roleplaying servers on WoW if you really want.

I know what you mean, but pretty much all games are just button bashing, when you strip away the actions and meaning.

This was one of the main criticisms in Star Trek Online. Too many battles made it feel outside of the Star Trek world, thus latest updates have introduced many missions and quests where you don't even need to file a phaser.

I think choice and variety is important. Not everyone plays a MMO to be sociable, not everyone plays a MMO to grind, but having different mechanisms inside the game so you can choose your activity depending on your mood is good.

I liked the casino in Phantasy Star Universe, it was nice to relax and play some mini-games. But the rest of the game was such a boring mess. Still, it's nice to have that distraction.

Edit: Actually, Reknoc, I love role playing, and I wish more MMO's had official RP servers and encouraged more activity!
