Dan Weldon's Fatal Crash

Post by crippenstation »

I saw this live and thought (and still think) this as truly unbelievable. It's surprising we don't see this more often in sports, but that's more of a compliment more than anything.

The only other death that I can think of so far this year is that fan that tried to catch a foul ball hit by Josh Hamilton but instead fell down a story and didn't survive the injuries resulted from the fall and impact on the concrete stairs.

The Rangers did honor the family during one of their ALCS as the man's son threw out the first pitch. I'll be more curious if he will be at any of the World Series games as the Rangers have qualified for that.

As for the Indy Racing League, they cancelled the remainder of the race (this crash also clinched the IRL season championship for the leader as the person who was 18 points back was in this wreck) and did a 5 lap salute in honor of Weldon. I'll be curious if they do anything in his honor before next year's Indianapolis 500 as he is the defending champion.

For those who haven't seen it, here's the crash as seen on ABC:
