Bulletstorm - Jon the VGNerd's review

Post by Jon the VGNerd »

It's been a while, eh? Well, look no further, Jon's here for another review, which is Bulletstorm, a shooting game where you can kill enemies in numerous ways! Here's the review:

----

You're Grayson Hunt (whose voice is strikingly similar to Tank Dempsey from Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops), a trigger-happy, adrenaline-junkie shooter who can kill enemies in humorous ways, attacking a ginormous ship known as the Ulysses, which was controlled by your arch-nemesis Saranno, before being crash-landed onto an unknown planet that's similar to Earth... or what's left of it anyway, with your nearly-downed comrade Ishi Sato, who is now a killer cyborg with a case of multiple personality disorder (hence why he is a cyborg), or just having a bad case of mood swings, as you and your human-like robot must venture your way to find and kill Saranno, and teamed up with a woman with a killer attitude Trishka along with your suicidal adventure, as you are swarmed by enemies you need to fend off and proceed.

In terms of plot, there are also a wide variety of ways to kill your enemies in creative and hilarious ways, such as Sparta-kicking your enemy off of the cliff or onto rebars and catcus needles, or shooting your enemy on the throat, or even shoot at multiple enemies while you're drunk with your minigun. Speaking of the minigun, this game has a few variety of weapons (in terms of DLC, however, considering as how they do posess more weapons, but at a price), but with many ways on how to kill your enemies, even giant ones. There is a campaign mode for this game, but if you find it too hard or too short for your liking, then Multiplayer and Echoes modes can help satisfy your boredom. For Echoes, you need to kill as many, in creative ways to rack up points, and run to the goal within the minimum time as fast as possible to earn the stars and maybe rack up a lot of points for doing so.

Unlike most shooting games, which are competitive ones, Bulletstorm is more of a cooperative type of mode, with one mode being Anarchy, in which you play three other players, trying to beat their scores as fast and creative as possible. Also, the game allows you to personalize your own character as you level up, but you can also shoot down enemies with your friends as well as you can perform team skillpoints by killing enemies in unusual and humorous ways, like ripping an enemy apart with your friend or Sparta-kicking him onto a killer tornado, even kicking your enemy onto a man-eating venus flytrap.

There are some quirks and flaws with this game; the campaign is relatively short and there is only one mode for you to play with your friends and beating their scores. There are a handful of maps, but you'll need to get more maps at a price, including an online pass, which itself is more nay than yay, as you have to pay $9.99 (or however the price varies, depending where you are from). It's pretty unfair on how you'll have to pay up money, rather than downloading it for free, and the same goes for weapons. If you want access for more weapons from DLC, it's not for free, unfourtunately, as there are a small array of weapons for your arsenal, mainly in multiplayer.

In the end, Bulletstorm is a pretty decent yet hilarious shooting game, as you can kill your enemies in creative ways to rack up points, and then some. The campaign is pretty meh, but at least there is Echoes mode for you to rack up points and claim your friends' leaderboards position and multiplayer is pretty good, despite it having only one mode, but with a handful of maps that contain skillpoints for you to discover and have a good laugh out loud (or LOL) as you kill hordes of enemies with your friends or other players, but if you want more weapons from the DLC, but are flat-out broke, you're less likely to play the multiplayer game with more maps to it, which also contains a wide array of skillpoints and weaponry, including the online pass content, in which it should've been for free, rather than to pay up your hard-earned cash.

The Good:

Numerous of hilarious ways of killing your enemies, nice graphics, great cooperative multiplayer mode (mainly the maps and skillpoints), humorous dialogue int he campaign, Echoes mode are a blast, nice weapons to kill enemies, wide array of skillpoints to earn.

The Bad:

Campaign mode is meh, DLC packs are literally pricey (no free weapons and maps for you, sadly), online pass is not free, only one multiplayer mode.

Worth Playing?

If you like killing your enemies in hilarious ways, then this game would be right for you, much better than The Club, which is a SEGA game, but nevermind that; there's also a cooperative multiplayer for you to try and rack up as many scores as possible, whether it be team-based skillpoints or individually, as well as Echoes mode, where you can get as many points as possible within the alloted time and take away your friends' positions from the leaderboards. In the end, it's a pretty good game if you like shooting games, although you won't like the pricey DLC packs, plus the online pass, which would've been a bargain if they were for free. If you want to buy it, be sure to killl your enemies in creative and unusual ways to rack up points and be the king of the creation killer (which also means killing enemies in unusual ways, hence on what I said it earlier). Have fun!

I remember reading about this game awhile ago. Quirky yet crazy. From the introduction in your review, it reminds me of "Armed and Dangerous" another wacky title from the past gen consoles. (which was literally like a Monty Python skit)

Odd how the underdog titles seem to be reappearing lately. But for good reason, there could be some hidden gems after all.
