Chickaroo Reviews: NiGHTS into Dreams...(PlayStation 3)

Post by chickaroo1 »

The SEGA Saturn classic returns in stunning HD! But is it worth it? Will Chickaroo make a decent review on her first try? Let’s find out, shall we!

Game: NiGHTS into Dreams...

Systems: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, originally released on the SEGA Saturn in 1995.

Price: $10 (USA)

NOTE: Before the review begins, I am reviewing the PlayStation 3 version of the game. I haven’t beaten the game either so there may be a few things I miss here. Please don’t hate and enjoy.

. . .
In the NiGHTS, Dream delight...
Story: The story here is about two kids, Claris and Elliot. They both fear of being made fun of. While they were dreaming that night, Claris had a dream where she was on stage of a singing competition she signed up for. As she was about to sing, the judges turned into monsters and laughed at her, causing her to run away. As she ran, she saw a strange light, and walked into it...
Meanwhile, Elliot’s dream was him and his friends playing basketball. As they were playing, Elliot was holding the ball, but some high school students knocked it out of his hands, and laughing at his basketball skills. The older boys turned into monsters and chased Elliot, causing him to run away. (Notice a pattern here?) He sees a white light and runs towards it...
And the game begins.

Time Limits and High Scores, Oh my!

Gameplay: You play as the flying jester, NiGHTS in both Claris and Elliot’s story. Your mission: clear the dreams and defeat the boss at the end of a level/dream.
What you do once you enter a dream, some nightmarens will steal your ideyas (Ideyas represent a trait. Example: courage, hope, ect.) In front of you, will be a gate where NiGHTS is. Just jump right and you now have control of NiGHTS, and off you go!
Your main objective in dreams is to fly around and collect 20 blue chips within the time limit and getting the ideya in the capsule, plus getting to the gate (where you started) for an overall score. Did I mention that you have to get a high score to get a good rating?
I’m not kidding you. It’s pretty hard to do so. You do this four times and then head to the boss.
Now bosses are okay. They’re not too bad. Most of them is either dash at them, or grab them and fling them everywhere. You do it a few times (within a time limit, of course) and you have cleared a dream!

It’s Like Swimming in the Air!

Controls: You can move all around in this game, but only in a certain path. NiGHTS can also dash in the air (Much like how Sonic can boost.) Hold down the O/X button to perform this action. You can hit nightmarens easily by doing this.
As you’re playing, you might notice sparks that travel behind NiGHTS. What do they do you might ask? Well, you can do a paraloop with them! The hell’s a paraloop?
A paraloop is where if you fly in a circle around something, connecting the sparkles, it might collect things nearby. Like if you paraloop some blue chips, you will collect them.

Delightful Soundtrack...Makes You Want to Dream

Music: The music here is fantastic! (Would SEGA ever dissapoint us?)
It's very cheerful and happy sounding in the dreams while having a groovy song playing in the background during a boss fight.
The main theme song "Dreams Dreams" is a very nice song. A guy and a girl sing in a "call-and-answer" kind of way.
OH - and you will fall in LOVE with the Christmas music in the Christmas NiGHTS level.
Want the soundtrack? It's avaliable now on iTunes!

It’s Scary How Technology Has Changed Between 1995 and 2012

Graphics: Well, look at it this way. The game was originally released in 1995, around the 3D gaming era, where 3D was the new thing for gaming. But in this port you have two ways to play (graphics wise). There’s “Brand New Dreams” and “SEGA Saturn Dreams”. Brand New Dreams is the HD remake of the game. And it is BEAUTIFUL!! Especially when compared to the SEGA Saturn Dreams version.
Speaking of the SEGA Saturn Dreams, it’s basically the (you guessed it,) original Saturn version. Now the SEGA Saturn Dreams isn’t in widescreen like in Brand New Dreams. The character models in SEGA Saturn Dreams are very...polygon-ish. And the ground and items seem a bit pixelated. And I can’t really hate on it because technology was like that in 1995.
But to me, it seems like MORE of a challenge to play the Saturn version because of everything being pixelated and the levels looking like a mess. Brand New Dreams seems to clean it up and make it look nice.

Is it The Best Dream To Enter?

Overall: Overall, NiGHTS into Dreams... isn’t for everyone. It’s pretty challenging and takes a while to get used to. You better know what you’re doing and think fast while playing this. But it is nice to look at. Very vibrant and colorful. The characters are nice to look at, the boss designs are creative.
And it’s a short game. But in a good way. It’s short, sweet and (some what) simple. It’s not violent, it’s kid friendly. It’s a happy game too.
Now, do I like it? Yeah! It may be hard, but I get a kick out of challenges. And I knew this game was challenging from the beginning. But still an enjoyable game!

Is it worth a buy? If you like challenges, go right ahead!

I give this game a 4/5

Good review; it's about as detailed as you can put into words. The controls and music sections were too brief in my opinion.

Oh Sorry, didn't see it earlier!
It is a very good one. I enjoyed reading it, but I'll have to agree with TheChaosBlue about the controls.
Despite that I really liked it, keep up the good job :)

Acceptable review! Of course being your first it wasn't easy explaining certain aspects of the game, but you did to the best of your ability. Great job!

Well hey; maybe there doesn't have to be a single review per game. Multiple reviews could happen. Being your first one I am surprised with how much content you typed. Good job overall.
