The SteamBox

Post by Quills on Wheels »

So for those who probably don't know, it appears that the Steam Box, Valve's first home console, has been officially confirmed and is predicted to come in 2013(that is, if we don't die before that :P ).

As far as sources go, I'm not too good on that(I heard it on Screwattack's Hard News so yeah...) so if possible, somebody else find a reliable source.

So, any thoughts or comments? I'd say this is interesting... for Valve to be stepping it up and joining the big league.

Imagine the third-party capabilities from this new system of sorts.

I'm guessing games like Team Fortress, Half Life and Portal would only be released on the SteamBox, huh?

It's probably just going to be a barebones PC that does nothing but run Steam. Unless it's easy to upgrade the hardware I don't really see the point. It's entering the already crowded console market. People who are a fan of Steam are mostly tech savvy enough to already have a competent PC and those who aren't are happy enough with their xboxs or playstations.

I can see it just being powerful enough to run Valve developed games.

No room for upgrades.

Price will be the make or break as most modern laptops will runVavle games fine (even on high detail with a dedicated GPU)

Being able to just run Valve developed games means it wont be able to run anything else. Their games run on anything.

It would be pretty lackluster for this Steambox to only run Steam games, if this console wants to be part of the next wave of gaming consoles.

Uh not really no. Pretty much every game released on PC gets on Steam.

And the Steambox will continue that that trend?

I don't see why not. I really can't imagine it being anything more than a box with steam installed. Similar to how OnLive's console worked.
