RadioSEGA - Address of 2012

Post by Gavvie »

New Year's Eve 2012. Much like I did last year, I like to use this topic to discuss how the past 12 months have gone for the site, and what sort of things I'd like to try and do in 2013.

Let's get right to the point - Did we deliver on what I said we would? Well...yes and no, but there was one thing we managed to finally do this year - We launched Project 7. You could argue that we launched it too soon, but we launched it. There's still the odd bit that needs sorting here and there, but I'm very proud that we were able to get the site up. We'd been itching for a site that not only worked properly, but also helped to further showcase who we are, and what we're about, and in 2013 we are going to not only finish the bits we have left, but tinker even more behind the scenes to make the site better.

I also said last year that I would like to get RadioSEGA's name out and about a bit more, and whilst I can't say with any great amount of certainty that we did that ourselves, there were a couple of people who have helped us out greatly, and deserve praise: KC & Titans Creed. The latter featured us in his Community Spotlight series on YouTube (which you really should watch), and hasn't gotten any dislikes yet from 218 views, so that can't be too bad!

KC, on the other hand, has snagged us some interviews, the likes of which I didn't think we'd ever be able to get. Let's just run down that list, which mtwinny kicked off with:

  • Hideki Naganuma (Composer of JSR, JSRF and Sonic Rush, amongst others)
  • Insert Coin Clothing (UK based clothes designers, all round awesome people)
  • Steve Lycett (Executive Producer at SUMO Digital)
  • Nick Popovich (Lead Designer of Spiral Knights)
  • Alex Schwartz (CEO of Owlchemy Studios, developers of Jack Lumber)
A special mention also for the SEGA Fans Chronicles interview with Nino MegaDriver, from the Brazilian band MegaDriver. Hands up all you who didn't know that. Don't be shy.

KC has done an absolutely outstanding job for us, and I cannot wait to see what surprises he has in store for us next year!

This year's Summer of Sonic was also one to remember, as we were the exclusive broadcasters for the event's audio stream. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control (that is, an idiotic sound tech guy who, despite repeated requests to fix the mics, never did), we couldn't quite give you the experience that we are known for. Rest assured, should Summer of Sonic return, we will be making damn sure it works the way we want it to, so you guys can enjoy it the way you should expect to. A particular highlight for me was seeing Tru/CapnCloudchaser FINALLY cosplay as Old Man Owl from the Sonic OVA. Don't panic if you wasn't there, I got a photo.

We also took the opportunity to acquire SEGA Media, a web portal for all things SEGA media (yep, really). One quick little rebranding and VOILA! RadioSEGA Media was born. Admittedly, we haven't done a lot with it since we took it on, but rest assured that it's one of the areas I'll be focusing the most on next year, making sure it integrates with the main site nicely, and starts to feature a lot more content than just our podcasts. In fact, we are in talks at this very moment to get a new Podcast series on there, so watch this space.

On our live show front, we saw some shows arrive, some shows leave, and others celebrate milestones. Sword of SEGA came back for a very successful, and popular, second season, complete with a full RPG storyline that kept listeners entertained for its duration. Radio Redux, after two seasons of dual-casting alongside SEGASonicRadio, returned exclusively on RadioSEGA. Ultra Wave, hosted by popular 80s TV legend Pat Sharp, burst onto the scene with a distinctly Sonic flavour (it also had MLP episodes towards the beginning, but we obviously didn't broadcast those). Late and Live started (and ended) this year as well, proving very popular in a primetime Friday evening timeslot. We also said hi and bye to Turbo Drive Live, a SSR staple that moved onto our airwaves for a month or two back in the Summer. SEGA Phantasy Zone was another show that ended this year.

But those are the shows that are currently off air. 2012 was the year where Saturday Night SEGA celebrated 100 Episodes, where Foreversonic's Random Hour hasn't had a podcast uploaded since May, and also the year where we welcomed The Sonic R Show to our ranks. Furthermore on the music front, Mr. Stream gave us two quite frankly superb live mixes, which you can find here and here.

So, what for 2013 then? Well, we are going to use our social media networks more. There's some ideas floating around which we are going to act upon, so please do keep your eyes open for more on that.

I also said last year that we'd be revamping the staff, something which hasn't exactly happened as I wanted it to. We have added a couple of new faces (Hi Gonic, BurningFlame2010 & chickaroo1!), but there's still a few changes to be made, and these will be made as soon as possible. Nothing too major, but things like switching your user ranking icons to something a little more mature, new staff teams being created, that sort of thing.

We'll also be out and about at conventions again. There are plans for another Club SEGA at next year's London Gaming Con in May (y'know, the one Mike Pollock's going to), so we'll be there spinning decks and having a good time. Eurogamer Expo 2013 is another one we'll be at, as well as Summer of Sonic '13 if it happens, but who knows? We might just go and throw our own get-together at some point...

And finally, we'll be bolstering our Live Show lineup with some great shows. Popular OverClocked ReMixer Rexy is bringing her knowledge of SEGA remixes to Friday nights with SEGA Mixer Drive, and I would like to exclusively reveal here that, whilst we still have a couple of details to mull over, we will be welcoming FastLane! to the starting grid at some point in the near future. Last week's Trial show was an....interesting experience, and one which, in time, could grow into a popular part of our lineup.

There's also another show which we're developing. This one has got me quite interested, and whilst we're not in any shape to announce details just yet, it's going to be unlike anything you've heard on RadioSEGA up until now. Unfortunately, it's not SEGA Sunrise (a long joked about morning show).

--

As ever, I'd like to close this off by thanking those that deserve it, and ignoring those who don't :P Nah, I jest. You are all still the reason why this site is where it is, and why I feel like we're moving in the right direction, but particular thanks have got to go to foreversonic and Whooa21, who have worked some bloody wonders on this site. There's a lot of bells and whistles that have been added to Project 7 by these two, a lot of which you probably won't have seen, or even noticed. mtwinny has done a superb job of reporting on SEGA news pretty much as it happened. KC, as mentioned earlier, has snagged some great reviews, but also kept our Podcasts up to date alongside Retrix. Dr Shaneman has been beavering away, tidying up our Playlist and adding so many new soundtracks, I've lost count. This guy's one person who doesn't get enough credit, and it's about time he got it.

As we close the book on 2012, and prepare to start writing a new one in 2013, I would like to wish you all the happiest of all New Years celebrations, from myself and my family here at RadioSEGA. It's an absolute privilege to be able to provide you with the very best SEGA music and remixes, all day, all year. I tried to coin a term this year that hasn't really stuck, but I think it's about time it does:

RadioSEGA. The best music. The best remixes. The best.

Because we are.

Thanks for reading,
Gavvie

That address made me smile a lot more than I thought it would. That's uncanny for me. Seriousness and humor? From you? You pulled it off well.

My favorite bits were the SINGLE line about the SEGA Phantasy Zone. At least it's acknowledged right? Plus that sauve host of Ultra Wave, pointing out Random Hour didn't have a podcast since May, the restructuring of the staff and the content this place has brought over the past year.

I'm just the type of person who always thinks I'm nothing special.

You meant "Because we are RadioSEGA heroes", right?... *ducks tomatoes*
Bad joke aside, this was a nice read. Even if I re-joined again around may/june, I didn't miss a lot, and just in time with the new look and features.

Doc! Don't be so hard on yourself already, it just started a new year. =P
