Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Review (PS3)

Post by chickaroo1 »

The galaxy's greatest duo is back in a brand new game with all new gameplay. This time, Ratchet & Clank will have to team up with Captain Qwark and their arch-nemesix, Dr. Nefarious in order to save the galaxy once again. Will this be a good game? Let's jump right in!

Game: Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One
Systems: PlayStation 3
Release Date: October 18, 2011
Developers: Insomniac Games

Bros B4 Foes
Story: Captain Qwark is now the president of the galaxy (Take that, Zaphod Beeblebrox) on his way to receive an “Intergalactic Tool of Justice Award” with Ratchet and Clank by his side escorting him. Dr. Nefarious then shows up with a huge monster, hoping that the monster he brought with him will devour our heroes. But the monster gets out of Nefarious’ hands and attacks the town. The four of them go after the monster, defeat it but suddenly, gets kidnapped by an unknown villain and is sent to an unknown planet.
The four find a little girl named Susie as she tells them the whereabouts of her people and her village. Now it’s up to our four heroes to help Susie and find a way back home.

What’s Gonna Work?
Gameplay: The gameplay this time around has a twist from the previous games. The gameplay is more focused on the 4 player co-op. You can play as Ratchet, Clank, Qwark and Nefarious.
Weapons are back, and can be upgraded...by purchasing them. Yeah, by using the weapon a whole lot doesn’t upgrade them this time around. Selecting a weapon is different too. Instead of using the Triangle button, you use the right analog stick. R1 is to fire your weapon. Instead of buying more ammo, there are ammo pods set up throughout an area so all you have to do is walk through it and all your ammo is restored for all your weapons.
The one weapon you will use a lot (and is kind of required for puzzles) is called the Vac-U. The Vac-U is used to suck up enemies, launch your partner to a higher area or to unlock doors and gates to the next area. To use this weapon, just hold the O button.
Now, let’s talk “co-op” in this game. You have a few options here, offline or online. Offline let’s you play the game on your own or with a friend next to you with an extra controller. Online let’s you go online and team up with other players around the world. When playing by yourself, you will be paired up with another character. So here’s what the pairings will be:
1. Ratchet with Clank
2. Clank with Qwark
3. Qwark with Clank
4. Nefarious with Clank

A Cinematic Feel
Music: The music in this game has a movie feel to it. In beautiful areas will have calming music, when you’re in a dangerous area, the music will be dramatic. It’s a nice soundtrack to listen to. The soundtrack is available on iTunes.
Composed by Michael Bross.

Same Cartoony Feel
Graphics: This time around, the character models are slightly different, mostly Ratchet and Clank. Ratchet has a less round head and bigger eyes. Clank is a little taller, almost to Ratchet’s height. Nefarious and Qwark are the same. The details are beautiful and the areas are very spacious. They’re really good.

The Moment of Truth, You Whippersnapper!
Overall: All 4 One is a pretty good game, in my opinion. A lot of people seem to not like this game, and I can see why. The buttons have been switched around, the co-op can get old and the humor is barely there. The co-op can be fun with others. I say it’s a pretty good game to play with friends.

Overall: 3/5

I did play this game, and while it was enjoyable, the gameplay is no-where as good as A Crack In Time.

I did quite enjoy the game but I mostly played it online. With 3 more people it's a great co-op experience. I don't think this should be compared to other R&C games. It's a whole different thing.
This was probably Insomniac's way to test out the concept instead of diving heads first into Fuse.
