Chickaroo Reviews: NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (Wii)

Post by chickaroo1 »

During the Saturn era, fans were bedazzled by NiGHTS. But fans wanted more. And after 10 years, we got a sequel. But is it a good sequel? Did SEGA change anything? Is it different?

Game: NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
Systems: Nintendo Wii
Release Dates: 12/13/07 (JP), 12/18/07 (NA), 1/18/08 (08), 1/24/08 (AUS)
Developers: SEGA Studio USA, Sonic Team

Back in Nightopia, 2 New Guests Arrive!
Story: So we're introduced to 2 kids, Helen and Will. Will is a soccer player while Helen plays the violin. Over time, things changed between the two kids. Helen would rather hang with her friends than practice violin with her mother. Will's father is being transferred to another town for his job, leaving Will behind. The two start to suffer nightmares until they see a bright light leading them to Nightopia. Here the two kids meet Owl, an owl who serves as a tutorial character and NiGHTS, our star and hero of the game. This time, NiGHTS has a voice so he/she can speak. (By the way, NiGHTS is considered genderless.) Owl and NiGHTS tells the kids that Nightopia is in danger and they need Helen and Will’s help to save Nightopia.

Bringing Something Good to the Next Generation
Gameplay: The gameplay is almost identical to into Dreams… with some new techniques and differences. Remember the blue orbs you had to collect in the last game? Well they’re back, but completely useless this time around.
There are 3 or 4 areas for each kid to go in and a total of 5 missions in each. The first mission represents the gameplay style of into Dreams… but a little different. Instead of collecting blue chips to unlock the 4 gates. You now have to chase a bird with a key. And then there’s a mini boss battle after that. The real boss fight comes after the other missions.
The missions themselves are...okay. One that keeps popping up is called link challenge. You have to fly through the orange rings and see how many "links" you can make.

For Non HD...Pretty Eye Catching
Graphics: For an early-ish Wii game, it's a really good looking game. The cinematics are impressive and flows quite nicely. It's beautiful.

A Majestic Piece of Ear Candy
Music: By now, most gamers know that SEGA games have fantastic music. The NiGHTS series has excellent music that even makes a return in this game. Some tracks make you think of the fall season while some have that majestic feeling that reminds you of Coraline. It’s a fantastic soundtrack.

A Nice Return to Nightopia?
Overall: Journey of Dreams is a fairly good game. The plot is very similar to the previous game. The voice acting is okay. The music is great. The gameplay is...okay. Not the best. Some missions were a huge pain. Some were just too easy. But it at least brings NiGHTS to a new generation of gamers.
