Chickaroo Reviews: Crash Bandicoot (PS1)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Considered a classic and the start of the PlayStation craze, Crash Bandicoot became the unofficial mascot for Sony during the PlayStation’s lifetime. And boy was he a success!

Game: Crash Bandicoot
Systems: PlayStation, PlayStation Network
Release Dates: PlayStation: 8/31/96 (NA), 11/2/96 (EU), 12/6/96 (JP)
PlayStation Network: 1/25/07 (JP), 5/3/07 (NA), 6/22/07 (PAL)
Developers: Naughty Dog

How it All Started
Story: Crash is an experimentation subject of Dr. Neo Cortex. While captured, he falls in love with another bandicoot named Tawna. Cortex decides he wants to experiment on Tawna. Crash tries to stop him but ends up out the window. Now it's up to Crash to save his girlfriend.

“Sonic's Ass Game”
Gameplay: The game is a 3D platformer. An early-ish one too. Players play as Crash as they navigate him through 3 islands as he defeats 4 bosses. Players can jump, slide, spin and even ride different animals throughout the jungle. For an early 3D platformer, this game is kind of tough. For one thing you have to use the D-pad since this game came out before the analog sticks were introduced. Jumps are tricky and by god you got to time things right or else you get a slap on the wrist for dying. It’s pretty fun for the most part, but tough as nails.

To the Limit
Graphics: Since the PlayStation had a 512 x 240 video mode, they had to push their limit to make a good looking game. And for an early PS1 game, this does look pretty good. It's not the best, it's easy to notice the polygons but the game is colorful.

Tropical Sounds
Music: Since the game takes place on a tropical island, chances are that the music sounds tropical. And it is! Some tracks are relaxing while some have become classics.
Music is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh and Josh Mancell.

A Great Classic?
Overall: Crash Bandicoot at the time was a very revolutionary game. With it's 3D sections and 2D sections, it was cool back in 1996. But the game does have some problems. For one, the game is tough as nails with controlling Crash with a D-Pad. But nonetheless, a classic.

Knew Mark Mothersbaugh had done music for films and cartoons likes Rugrats, but never realised he'd done games as well. The man's a machine.
Tic Tac, sir?
