Hey, it's the last days of December! You know what that means, right? Time to follow up on last year's thread! Let's hear your favourite games that you've discovered/played through the past year and why you loved them so much.
There are three for me this year (in no order):
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Format: 3DS
Publisher: Nintendo
As you may already know, I love the franchise, however, after having played "Wild World" on the DS, I skipped past the Wii version, feeling that the "dip-in, dip-out, take over your life" rural socialising sim was more suited to a portable console. So, after waiting seven years for a new portable game in the series (Holy fudge, was 2006 really that long ago?!) New Leaf felt like a great leap forward. At it's core the game is still the same - utilizing the system clock you can chill out with the locals, take part in rural activities like fishing, bug hunting, or fossil hunting, or decorate your home in a world that feels like it's still alive even when you're not there. However the twist of now being the mayor of the town - with the added responsibilities that brings - combined with enhanced customisation options for clothing, furniture and even the town itself make the game even more engrossing. Plus, it's full of Nintendo Magic. I don't want to see how many hours I've spent with that game, but regardless of how many it might be, this next game is one that I may have sunk even more time into this year.
Persona 4 Golden
Format: Playstation Vita
Publisher: ATLUS
Contrary to what you might think of me, I've never played a huge number of JRPGs. I know, right? Metal. Anyway, I decided to take the plunge this year and after hearing so much about it I decided to give the Persona franchise a go. I'm very glad I did. With a story that drew me in and even managed to intersperse humour into it's murder mystery plot thanks to its' delightful cast of characters. (Chie-chan was a particular delight...) I could tell a lot of love had been put into this game and I enjoyed it very much. Time seemed to melt away once I started playing it. I don't even mind that I got the worst possible ending, because it gives me an excuse to play through the entire game again. Hurrah! I suppose I should try Persona 3 next? At least then I might understand what's going on in Arena. Or the fandom.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengence
Format: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC (PC version coming soon)
Publisher: Konami
I'm chuckling just remember this. It was just so much fun! Cyborg ninja. Come on, that alone should make you want to play it. Fast paced with fluid combat, a story with ideas way above it's station that makes no sense, and the most badass final boss fight I've had in a long time. Just play it, you'll understand. It's ridiculous fun. The soundtrack deserves an honourable mention that's to it's OTT metal tones, along with the cheesy dialogue throughout: "I once thought of my sword as a tool of justice. However...This isn't my sword!" Plus, how many other games are going to teach you a Guyanese insult?
