Chickaroo Reviews: Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom (PS2)

Post by chickaroo1 »

This game is considered to be one of the best Spongebob games of all time. It feels like you’re playing through an episode of the show (and a good episode that is.) Full of references from the show, this is Battle for Bikini Bottom.

Game: Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
Systems: PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC, GameBoy Advance
Release Dates: 10/21/03 (NA), 1/16/04 (AUS), 3/03/04 (EU)
Developers: Heavy Iron Studios

Are You Ready Kids?
Story: Plankton is up to no good again! He’s created a machine called the Duplicator 3000 that can create multiple robots at once. But Plankton forgot to pull the switch on the machine from “Don’t Obey” to “Obey” so now the robots are misbehaving and are now invading Bikini Bottom.
Meanwhile, Spongebob and Patrick are playing together and wish that robots were real. When they wake up the next morning, sure enough, their dream “comes true.” After a while, they realize that the robots are attacking all of town. So now it’s up to Spongebob, Patrick, and Sandy to stop them.

Now THIS is How You Make a Licensed Game!
Gameplay: The game is your average platformer.
There are 3 playable characters: Spongebob, Patrick and Sandy, each with their own moves or abilities. Spongebob has multiple moves. Patrick can carry heavy items while Sandy can glide and swing a rope in mid-air as well as lasso up enemies.
There are 3 main areas of Bikini Bottom that act as hub worlds and 12 levels in total. Some levels have mini bosses and there are a total of 3 main bosses (4 if you count the final boss since it’s split into 2 parts.)
There is lots to collect. From golden spatulas to shiny objects to socks to lots of things. It’s a bit of a collect-a-thon but it pays off in the end.
All the locations in the game are from the show. Which is cool because you feel like you’re playing through an episode of the show.

From Animation to Computer Graphics
Graphics: The graphics are really good and stay true to the artstyle of the cartoon. From the style of the buildings to how well the characters look in a 3D environment, it’s pretty amazing.

Crank Up The Tunes!
Music: Boy the music here is catchy and good. It really does sound like something you would hear in the show and wow is it relaxing and good.

The Best Spongebob Game In Existance?
Overall: Battle for Bikini Bottom shows us that some licensed games can be really good. Having references from past episodes with witty humor and the actual voice cast, can equal a really good game. Mixed in with some great platforming.
