Chickaroo Reviews - The Simpsons: Hit & Run (PS2)

Post by chickaroo1 »

They say some licensed games are pretty bad. Especially when a show has been on air for a long time. But that’s not the case today. Here, we have a pretty great licensed game - probably one of the greatest Simpsons games to this day.

Game: The Simpsons: Hit & Run
Systems: PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Windows
Release Dates: PS2/Xbox/GameCube: 9/16/03 (NA), 10/31/03 (EU), 2003 (AUS)
Windows: 11/13/03 (NA), 11/21/03 (EU)
Developer: Radical Entertainment / Gracie Films / Fox Interactive

Trouble in Springfield
Story: One day, random robot wasps appear in the town of Springfield. Meanwhile, we see Homer at home seeing a new commercial for the new Buzz Cola, launched by Krusty the Clown. As Homer and his family go about their day, things seem strange around town - mysterious black vans roaming around town, the robot wasps that are security cameras, crop circles and much more. What’s going on and who is responsible for this?

Grand Theft Simpsons
Gameplay: The game is a pretty big parody of Grand Theft Auto III (released back in 2001.) There are 5 playable characters - Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge and Apu. Each character has their own level to play through and missions. Most missions involve driving from point A to point B or chasing down someone in a car. So in short, 90% of the missions are vehicular based.
Since the game is also in sandbox style, there isn't much openness to the worlds. They can be pretty big but they go in one loop. So there isn't much to explore besides getting coins and collectibles while running on foot.
Just like in GTA, you can get in trouble for breaking some laws. If you fill up the meter at the bottom right corner, you will get a "Hit & Run." This is where you got to make a run for it away from the cops or else you get busted.

Holy Macaroni
Graphics: So this’ll be fun to explain.
So we all know what the characters look like in a 2D perspective. After all, it’s a 2D cartoon. Now try putting them in 3D and not have the game cel shaded. To sum it up, the graphics aren’t that great, it makes the characters look a little...odd. Granted, they look familiar but all the Simpsons characters look strange in 3D.

Just like The Show
Music: The music here is pretty good. It sounds like something you’d hear straight from the show. Whether it’s an awesome remix of the iconic theme song in a level to the cop chase music, it’s pretty sweet to listen to.

Is It Great to Destroy the Town?
Overall: Simpsons: Hit & Run has now become a cult classic for the past couple of years now. The game is well written, everyone is voiced by everyone from the show, the dialog is hilarious and so on. After a while, the game can have a few problems here and there, especially since the whole game’s missions involve driving all around. But nonetheless, a classic.

I currently have this game, It's based on SEGA's Crazy Taxi.

I think the game is pretty fun, I haven't finished it, but it can kick your ass if you aren't prepared and will last you a decent time unless you're one of those gamers who like to marathon it.
