Chickaroo Reviews - Ristar (Genesis)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Well the Genesis’s lifespan is about to come to an end, but there was one last good game that came out for it. And that little game would be Ristar!Game: Ristar / Ristar the Shooting Star
Systems: Sega Genesis, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, PC, GameCube, Sega Game Gear
Release Dates: Genesis: 2/17/95 (JP), 2/16/95 (NA), 2/18/95 (EU)
Virtual Console: 12/6/06 (JP), 12/4/06 (NA), 12/15/06 (EU)
Developers: SEGA
Among The Stars
Story: So apparently, there’s a difference between the Japanese and English versions of the game.
In the Japanese version, in the planet Neer (named Flora in the English version), is being terrorized by a villain named Rino, who snatched the planet elder. The Star Goddess, Oruto, awakens one of her star children, Ristar, to save the elder and Neer.
In the English version, Ristar has a father figure instead of the Star Goddess. They both get kidnapped and it’s up to Ristar to save them.
Mr. Stretchy Arms
Gameplay: The gameplay is very similar to the Super Mario Brothers and possibly the Sonic the Hedgehog games. It’s a 2D side scrolling platformer. Ristar can use his arms to hit enemies and grab onto platforms. He stretches his arms out to grab an enemy and headbutts them into stardust.
Ristar’s arms are used to open chests and swinging on poles to reach higher places or to end a level. His health is represented by the little stars on the top right corner of the screen. If he gets hit, he loses a star. Once he loses all of his stars, he’s knocked out and loses a life. Lives are represented by little Ristar statues.
Ristar can do many things. Run, jump, stretch his arms, swim, and much more. It’s a unique platformer with it’s dazzling looks.
What a Beautiful Game
Graphics: For a late Genesis game, Ristar looks beautiful. With it’s colorful environments, bright and vivid colors and much more. Even Ristar himself is a cute and cool character.
Music in Space
Music: The music here is pretty good. Very dancy and uplifting. With it’s fast techno space groove, it’s a really good sound track.
Music is composed by Tomoko Sasaki, Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata.
A Star is Born
Overall: Ristar is a pretty good game. It’s bright, colorful and vivid. It appeals to all ages too. Sadly, the game was overshadowed by the upcoming Sega Saturn, so the game didn’t sell well, but got much critical acclaim.

Ristar is awesome, I remember borrowing the cart from a mate and loving it so much I refused to give it back to him until I completed it! The music, the visuals, solid gameplay with tight controls... a very well put together package that really showed off what the MD / Genesis could do towards the end of its lifespan. Ristar, you may not be as well known as a lot of SEGA's other IP's but for those of us who knew you, you will not be forgotten! :D
Faster than the speed of sound, sneaker wearing, chilli dog eating hedgehog with a penchant for industrial scale vandalism, animal activism and jewellery theft. Seems legit.
