No, I think SEGA just allowed and approved the use of Sonic in this ad. It's not unusual. I think we saw Halo in Mtn Dew ads a few years back and Mario in a 'Got Milk?' ad a little under a decade and a half ago. Neither Mountain Dew nor Milk really have to do much with video games.

Mario is popular with the kids so it's fitting he'd be chosen to sell milk. Halo is big with the dudebro crowd who drink loads of mountain dew brah. So they're both a lot more fitting than a character from a kids game selling car insurance.

They're not using characters only kids know about though (*cough* Adventure Time *cough*) A lot of people my age grew up playing the Sonic games on the Genesis. In fact, I've noticed a few tunes from Sonic 3 was used in this ad. If you ask me, they're capitalizing on nostalgia. I mean, those same people are now old enough to have car insurance. Hense the ad.

In terms of my earlier points, I nearly forgot Pizza Hut used Crash Bandicoot to sell their food in the late 90's. And Subway used Uncharted... just a few months ago.

Both Mountain Dew and Subway were cross promotions though, this is just an ad for adults with a kids video game character.

You can kinda relate the two. I mean Cars would be somewhat related to speed and Sonic is what Speed it.

Still... it is rather odd.

In addition to that, the Sonic 20th Anniversary Twitter feed posted a pic showing off the disc design.

Again, all this was originally reported from our good friends at Sonic Wrecks.

Looks like a solid and well organized disc release. Disc 1 has the HD levels, disc 2 has the portable levels, and disc 3 has the boss battles. Sweet! Here's hoping it shows up on iTunes soon.

The only curiousity of mine is why we have two Shadow boss battle music...
