That's true. Only the most obsessive compulsive gamer would attempt a feat such as that.
I don't pirate, I like to support developers.

Most of Matty's excuses were pretty weak.

Funny, I thought this was a no-judgement zone... Least that's what the OP said :/ I found Matty's reasoning to be perfectly fine, though still different than my own.
Tossing in my toonie on the matter, I only pirate games that are very old and just can't be found in stores where I live (ex: Bomberman 64 The Second Attack, Earthbound/Mother) and while shopping online would help, I can't buy online yet. When I can that will make a huge difference. And if there's a game I know I want i'll buy it once the price is affordable.
I have this personal rule I try to stick to -nothing beyond a certain era of systems unless it can't be found in the stores I frequent. Even the ones way out there. And the one time i've broken it It lead to me purchasing a brand new copy of the game because I loved it that much(Persona 3 FES), and placing a couple others on my absolute to-get list.
But getting to my point, personally I think of pirating as a double-edged sword. People who do it can get a taste of whatever they're interested in, or a game that while amazing, has a low chance of making it overseas...
and if they like it they can buy it and support the developer or even become a fan! -But they can also just choose not to, it's like a more effective form of advertising that way... Albeit with the obvious risk of lost money.
Or if enough people find out about a game that devs weren't planning to translate but like it they can let them know and push for an overseas release.
In short, it's not an entirely good thing for the industry but it
does have it's upsides, and while you can't guarantee a purchase in an instance where the game
can be pirated, you still can't guarantee one where it
can't be, either.

I'm a collector of various retro games, and I plan/hope to work in the videogame industry in a near future, so I'm not much into piracy. Of course there are exceptions like the extremely pricey ones (I did not buy my copy of Ikaruga for my DC) and trying out stuff that I later get online. But if I like it (and it's not a japan-only, ultra-rare obscurity) I'm buying it.
Matty wrote:The main reason people pirate is because they cost so much new, i mean who has £40 (per game) to spend each week? say you get 3 games a week (seems reasonable) thats £120, i dont even get that to myself in a month let a lone have that kind of money to spend on games
A bit off-topic but:
WHAT?! Seriously?! 3 games a week seems reasonable? Excuse my french but that sounds batshit insane to me. I'm not much into the gaming market of today, for various reasons, but I do find it hard to believe that anyone, assuming they either study or work full-time, can find free time to play through 3 different games each week. If they were RPG's I'd say it's impossible to play through them in that time even if you're unemployed.
On a second note, is £40 what full-price games cost over there? Over here in Sweden, that kind goes for around £60-70 with the handheld ones being slightly cheaper (thank god).

I think I've bought 3 games in the last 6 months.
And yeah, £35-45 around that, though I suppose it'll go up when VAT goes to 20%. Are there massive taxes in Sweden then? I can't believe the country is associated with low crime when they charge money like that for games!

I used to pirate megadrive games back in the day (mainly coz I didn't have the money to buy em). but that stopped when I started working.
I can honestly say I don't have pirated games. well, I have 2, but I also own the originals who are scratched, so thats technically legal.
I do have & ton of mame roms though, since its impossible to own my own arcade
I can understand folks for pirating current gen consoles, since the stuff is way overpriced (although games are cheaper now than 20 years ago). there's just too much coming out to be able to afford it all.
however, as a collector I'm against pirating old consoles

If you can't afford a new TV is it okay to steal one?

And that line is why some people argue....
I gave up on Consoles for a while now. Only Portables.
If i really like it, I'll buy it. The people I don't agree with are the ones that profit from it.

In terms of right and wrong there's nothing to argue.

I'm going to regret asking this but, what on Earth are you on about?
