Most, perhaps. However, the Rebuilds are pretty.

Guess I'll find out, from what I've heard they also employ ugly CG.

Ehhh, only for one of the angels and for a few not especially important background bits and bobs: e.g city scenic panoramas.
Characters, on the other hand, look great.

Excuse me while I get this off my chest...

OH MY GOD, REI IS JUST SO FUCKING SWEET IN 2.22!!!!!
I love her. I really do.
I'm tempted to re-watch the original series again now. However, I should really work on my DVD backlog...
I've got 1.11 and 2.22 on Blu-Ray, and haven't got around to watching them yet. Should do at some point...
Have never seen any of the original series though, which I'm not too sure is a problem or not.

Speaking of, seen 1.11 two weekends ago. I do know I saw the original series back on Adult Swim, but that was a pretty long time ago. Nice to have this movie recap and refresh my memory of the series once again.

Knowing the original series helps, but having not seen it shouldn't hinder you very much.
On the other hand, not knowing could be a good thing, especially when 2.22 starts it's divergence from the events of the original series. After watching 1.11 follow the early stages of the original series quite closely (only minor differences) I spent much of 2.22 going "Wait, hang on, that's different. So's that. HEY! That's new. Cool." and not paying attention to what was actually going on.

I say you should watch the original series first, even though the rebuild series is new take of the series there's something you should know

Many people are starting to suspect "rebuild series" is actually a sequel to the original series. For example you can still see the blood stain on the moon from the original series and the "end of evangelion" movie, you can see signs of the mass productions Evas in 1.1, the ocean is now red in the rebuild series after the events of "The end of evangelion", in the original series Shinji always listened to "25-26" on his player while in the new series he's listening to "27", the final scene in the "end of evangelion" is the opening to 1.1, and the one I noticed is in the rebuild series kaworu says "Shinji This time i will atleast make you happy."
So im guessing after the events of the original, time and life started again on the same earth but different events will occur. 1.1 stayed true to the original almost 100%, 2.2 started going down a different path, 3.3 im guessing is going to be something else... but who knows!

A couple of things, RWDebara:
(End of Evangelion & Rebuild 1 & 2 spoilers!)

The red sea was caused by Second Impact in the rebuilds: In 2.0 Kaji takes the gang a marine preservation facility featuring blue seawater and marine life from before second impact. Also, Misato comments that Pen Pen's species is from before Second Impact
Also, from what I've heard (to be honest I've been trying to avoid 3.0 details) 3.0 is entirely new events.
My thoughts: The rebuilds don't occur immediately after End of Evangelion, the events of End of Evangelion/the human instrumentality project are pretty much humanity hitting the reset button after second impact. After hundreds of millions of years events repeat themselves, albeit with some differences.
One interesting difference I find to be a good example of this rebooted timeline theory surrounds the American NERV base Mari starts off at the beginning of 2.0. Now, it's been a while since I watched the whole of the original series, but I remember correctly, that US base is mentioned, however, only in passing in a discussion about it being lost mysteriously, possibly by an Eva Test or an angle attack; I don't quite remember. However, Rebuild 2.0 starts off at that base with Mari fighting off an angel with a prototype Evangelion. In the original series timeline, Mari looses and the base is destroyed, however, in the rebuilds Mari is successful and then heads to Japan. Of course, since Mari dies in that moment in the original series she's no longer an import character and never mentioned, however, she does exist during the events of the original series.
Pretty much everything Kaworu says in the first two rebuilds adds to the sequel theory. In 1.0 it's subtle, he comments something along the lines of "We're at this stage again?" when he's awoken by SEELE. However, the comment you mentioned before at the end of 2.0 is much more of a giveaway. Also, he seems to be aware of the cycle, unlike many other characters. At most I reckon it him and the other angles, along with SEELE who are aware of the previous events.
Also, when do we see MP Evas in 1.11?
Enough of my rambling though...

It probably doesn't help that, even if I wanted to watch the original series, getting it on DVD would be bloody difficult these days...

True. It's been a few years since ADV went down the drain. I think I bought my Platinum Collection at the right time...Might actually fetch a fair few bob nowadays...
