16bit generation was the golden era of SEGA. They continued to thrive to a large extent up until the release of Shenmue II, and (partially as a result of the costs that game incurred, along with the unfortunate fate of the Dreamcast) lead to the company we know today. Since then, SEGA have rehashed their old franchises on former competitors' consoles, and most new 'innovative' franchises (Yakuza for example) have not really been innovative at all. So therefore, Old Gen. But by 'Gen', I'm talking 'Gen-esis' / Mega Drive.

I can't think of anything particularly innovative about Yakuza. There fecking good though regardless.

Guess I missed all these small scale city based RPGs with a fluid action combat system everyones apparently drowning in.
Edit: Hell Yakuza aside, SEGA are, as much as I'd rather not credit them, slightly responsible for Platinum's games.

There's too many games to list that has a fight system where you level up and upgrade your character and again you could probably say the same about the side mission/city explore game play. It just does it better than most games which is the most important thing at the end of the day.
I'd love to give Sega credit for Platinum games but if Sega didn't publish them, someone else would've.

Tell me one thing Yakuza did that Shenmue hadn't already done far better before you trash talk on this forum.

If you're comparing Yakuza to Shenmue you're already a lost cause.
But how about all of the RPG elements.

Yakuza is just a poor man's Shenmue, IMO

Similiarities between Yakuza and Shenmue:
They are both set in a realistic Japanese setting
You play as a Japanese guy
They both ape popular japanese movies
You can dick around with minigames (both games have very different minigames)
Action oriented combat (shenmue has like 5 instances of this compared to it being the meat of Yakuza)
Similiarities between Fallout: New Vegas and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Las Vegas:
They are both set in Las Vegas
You can shoot things
You have have AI partners
They both involve Casinos
