Plus with Gen 6's pair of games, add just another year until a main game release.
Uh I actually checked the gap between each new gen. It's 4 years for the first 3 and 3 years after that. Not including the third version because they're not new main games.

Lugia finally found a friend to relate to!
As for not including the third iteration because it's not new is missing the point that they still release a Pokemon game one year after the main two. I count the third for merely adding new content (despite being pretty small improvements), if anything why do we count the two games as the main and not the third which usually has pokemon from both types and usually some unique ones of their own?

Because it's at best an "expansion" pack and at worse a pointless cash grab.

Uh..I wasn't referring to the Gens. If I didn't explain myself more closely sorry. I meant the games' individual release date from each other. It's roughly a 1-2 year window between them. Going by the North American dates as an example:
Red and Blue: September 30th, 1998
Yellow: October 8th, 1999
Gold/Silver: October 15th, 2000
Crystal: July 29th, 2001
Ruby/Sapphire: March 19th, 2003
LGFR: September 9th, 2004
Emerald: May 1st, 2005
Diamond/Pearl: April 21st, 2007
Platinum: March 22nd, 2009
HGSS: March 14th, 2010
BW: March 6th, 2011
BW2: October 7th, 2012
And now X/Y: October 2013
So....yeah between Gens. it's roughly the time-frame you said. Between the games on their own it's really notable...similar to Madden with the way these games are released.
But what do we care? We'll still buy the games cuz it's Pogeymanz.

Actually I don't, I only buy the new gens, the third games make me sick. Only reason I bought B/W2 is because I thought it was a much better way to do the third game. I'll also pick up a spinoff if I think it's neat enough (Snap, Mystery Dungeon). To be fair though, I did straight up forget about the Remakes haha.
The difference between Pokemon and Madden (or CoD) is that it's pretty clear when the "important" games come out. With each year the new Madden is the next installement in Madden. With Pokemon everything is just filler until the next Gen.

I know it's a cash grab but it's still part of the main series.
Sonic & Knuckles is an expansion pack but we class that as part of the main game too.

I remember buying an American Pokemon Silver cart back in 2000.
I doubt I will buy the new gen games....as I didn't like Gen V enough to consider getting back into the series.
Overall though, it's had a good run.

I think it's had a pretty poor run to be honest, Gen3 and 4 were so abysmal I gained some massive Pokemon apathy. It was especially worrying when I realised I wasn't actually enjoying Soul Silver, the remake of the best gen. 5 made all the right moves, but I wonder if 6 can keep my interest.
At least I know it'll be out this year, unlike superiour party capturing RPGs Shin Megami Tensei IV and Soul Hackers :<

Makes me hope that if this 'third game' to X and Y may be Z, but not necessarily along the lines of Crystal, JP Blue, and the others...but as a sequel to X and Y. Who knows.

Pretty much. HGSS were so much better than Platinum to me. That is some good filler I'd say.

After B/W2 I really don't want them to go back to the third game thing again. Though I'd still want them to rename it Z because of the whole 3D cartesian coordinations thing!

Well, when I used the term filler but not to assume any sort of quality on the games.

Oh I know; I'm using what you said for my own personal preference. No harm.
