Was Generations kinda like that? The Eggmen were the Big Bad at the end of the game, and were the ones piloting the Time Eater throughout the game.

Yeah since it was basically a giant mech piloted by both Eggman's.
Generations was just too damn short and made up mostly of challenge acts. That was it's only problem.

Short to finish all of the game in probably one day. This new game, whatever it may be, has got to have replayability.

It's got to be longer than a days worth >.>
I actually would like a new version of the robot carnival/robot storm bosses from heroes. They actually made a lot of sense as a boss fight.

Don't forget colors as well.
In fact, I can only think of Unleashed, SA1 and Sonic 06 where Eggman tries to awaken something from the past.
Honestly, I don't mind a ancient monster being unleashed. Again, I just want it to be fun. SA1 WAS fun. Chaos was awesome. Though mind you, you'd think Eggman has learnt his lesson after trying to unleash three ancient monsters that they just won't listen to him and betray him in the end.

SA2 was kind of fighting against a lot of things. Though mostly GUN vehicles and character confrontations.
Then there was Biolizard which Eggman is responsible for awakening by inserting all the emeralds into the ARK.

It's like Modern Sonic says to Past Sonic in Generations "We beat him every single time, its like our job or something!" you really would have thought Eggman learned his lesson by now, but clearly not!!
I second a motion for a longer Sonic Generations. I wished for some more DLC levels to pad it all out... Disappointed that PS3 \ 360 owners didn't get the awesomeness that is Mushroom Hill... one of my favourite levels from S3&K - and that music!!!
Hopefully Sega have Sonic back on the right track again.
Also never minded Sonic's friends, I grew up with the cartoons and as a kid it all worked out for me, the crew of friends in SA1 were - bar Big and Gamma - cannon in my mind, as are the Chaotix crew. Then it gets a little more hazy...

Speaking of Eggman, I really hope they fix boss fights this time. While the core stage mechanics are getting better and better the boss fights are still the same tired crash bandicoot level boredom as they have been for ages.

I would like to see some creativity in how boss battles are handles, specifically utilizing the themes & gimmicks previous stages (from within this "game") that lead up to these boss fights.

Those Rival battles in Generations? I liked them. I would want to see more of a diversity in how the boss is fought.
And I too like the Robot Carnival/Robot Storm bosses.
