October 2011: Golden Axe Beast Rider (Xbox 360)

Post by Gavvie »

This month, seeing as it's October and October has Halloween and such, we thought we'd try something different. Instead of using Game of the Month to remember past or present glories, we'd feature a game that was so bad it's almost shameful.

In the past there's been quite a few of these, so the game you hate the most might not be the one featured here. I chose this one because it basically murdered an entire franchise. Ladies and Gents - Shame of the Month.

Golden Axe: Beast Rider was almost doomed from the start. Despite some promising screenshots, the game was still developed by Secret Level, whose last project was a disappointing port of Final Fight: Streetwise on the Xbox. Not exactly their fault, but not one to be linked with, especially as the games they had worked on before that were actually pretty decent.

Anyway. Back to the broken, buggy mess that was Golden Axe. As expected, a much loved franchise coming back was met with some scepticism. And when it released, all of that was very well founded.

It was quite clear that the game hadn't been through any QA, and if it had, it was very little. It starts off as little things. If you jump straight up, the character model clips to the right when it lands. Every single time. It doesn't help when the character (Tyris Flare, returning from the originals and oversexualised) moves slowly, handles poorly and is actually quite easy to kill.

The game revolves around-you know what. Let's just stop this right here. There is seriously nothing good to say about the game. Music is terrible, graphics aren't at all special, the plot is laughable and the gameplay, which should always be the most important part of a game no matter what, is utterly disappointing. This crap should have been seen coming a long mile off, and SEGA should have stopped it.

Thankfully, they stopped the sequel. Who knows how bad that could've been...
