Here we are ladies and gentlemen - the reboot to the classic franchise with our lovely lady, Lara Croft, as she is now “reborn.” We go back to the past and explore Lara’s first adventure as a survivor and a tomb raider.
Game: Tomb Raider
Systems: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Release Dates: Windows/PS3/360: 3/5/13 (World Wide), 4/15/13 (JP)
OS X: 1/23/14 (NA + EU)
PS4/Xbone: 1/28/14 (NA), 1/31/14 (EU)
Developers: Crystal Dynamics
A Survivor is Born
Story: 21 year old Lara Croft is on her way to the Dragon’s Triangle to find the lost kingdom of Yamatai. On her way there, a brutal storm comes crashing in and sends the boat to a stranded island where Lara and her shipmates are washed ashore. As Lara tries to get a hold of her friends, she is suddenly knocked out and taken to a strange cave. As she escapes, she finds a backpack from the ship with a walkie talkie, now able to get a hold of her friends. Now it’s up to Lara to figure out the mysteries of this strange island and head back home.
Move Over, Nathan Drake
Gameplay: A lot of people compare the gameplay to the Uncharted series. (Which is funny because Uncharted was originally inspired by Tomb Raider in the first place.)
The game is an action-adventure third person shooter. You can roam around the island to find collectibles or ammo for your weapons. Speaking of weapons, at the start of the game, Lara finds a bow and arrow as your starter weapon. As the game progresses, you’ll be able to find others.
Since the game is also published by Square Enix, expect some leveling up some weapons. Around the island, you can find savage, which helps you build up your weapons and mod them.
Killing enemies also builds up some experience points, which leads to skill points. One skill point can help Lara become a better fighter, brawler and hunter.
The Most Realistic Lara Croft You Will Ever See
Graphics: Lara Croft finally looks like an actual human being. Sure she still looks curvy and has pretty big boobs, but she looks realistic in a good way. The game is motion captured. The environments look beautiful and the details on Lara and her friends are amazingly good.
Sounds of the Island
Music: The music here is pretty good. From the battle music to a song that plays once you reach a new area, it's beautiful.
Music is composed by Jason Graves.
The Beginning of a New Era?
Overall: Tomb Raider 2013 is a pretty good game. From the gameplay to the graphics, it looks beautiful. But the one complaint I have is that the story is pretty meh. It's predictable. But that doesn't stop it from being a good game. You want to protect Lara from all the dangers of the island. You want her to win.
It's good to have you back, Miss Croft.
