It’s Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary (in 2011 that is). And what better way to celebrate than to make a game that’s way too short but still very fun.

Happy Birthday Blue Blur!
Story:It’s Sonic the Hedgehog’s birthday! And all of his friends celebrate by bringing him to a random field with a birthday cake and chili dogs. But that gets ruined by the Time Eater, an evil being who sucks up all of Sonic’s friends (including himself) into a white void. There, Sonic meets Classic Sonic (which is Sonic’s original design during the 90’s before Sonic Adventure). The two understand the dangers that their friends are in and so they race through the empty void to save their friends.
A Blast Through The Past (Literally!)
Gameplay:The game is pretty much split into two different gameplay styles: classic and modern. Classic levels are played with Classic Sonic and the camera is set in the 2.5D perspective. These levels are pretty much throwbacks to Sonic’s Genesis / Mega Drive days. Meanwhile, Modern Sonic’s gameplay is pretty much the fast paced gameplay similar to Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors. You can boost really fast by collecting rings. And as well as the homing attack is back in the modern section.
Now the levels are levels from past games that are redone for both Classic and Modern. And they look amazing! I’ll list the levels:
  • Green Hill Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
  • Chemical Plant Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)
  • Sky Sanctuary Zone - Sonic & Knuckles (1994)
  • Speed Highway - Sonic Adventure (1999)
  • City Escape - Sonic Adventure 2 (2001)
  • Seaside Hill - Sonic Heroes (2004)
  • Crisis City - Sonic 06’ (2006)
  • Rooftop Run - Sonic Unleashed (2008)
  • Planet Wisp - Sonic Colors (2010)
Now that’s just the home console version. The 3DS version of the game features levels from the handheld but I won’t list them since I’m not reviewing that version.
There are also little missions you can do by entering a gate nearby the levels.
Also, the bosses in this game (besides) are from past games. Be it big robots or bosses that end up being mini bosses in this game. They’re fun but some can last a while.
High Definition at It’s Finest
Graphics:This game looks gorgeous. It’s colorful, bright, clean and beautiful. This is one of the best looking Sonic games in recent times. And just how well the game can look while Sonic runs really fast is amazing.
20 Years of Great Music
Music:The music here is simply the tracks from older games that are remixed, and they’re great! Very good remixes of fantastic songs from Sonic’s past games and they’re fun to listen to!
Music is composed by a lot of people at SEGA (There’s a lot to name here).
A Great Way to Spend A Birthday?
Overall:Sonic Generations is a fun game. But the only problem I have is that the game is really short. In all honesty, you could beat the story mode within a day. Now yes, there are collectibles and missions to do but still. I barely go back to this game knowing that it’s short and I just don’t feel like going back to the missions. But that’s just me. It’s still a great game.
