Sonic Fighting Game: 2D or 3D?

For those who are unaware, I've been working on a Sonic fighting game. Development has hit another standstill and I've been wondering which style of fighter would be better received.

I'm asking because I only have one guy programming it and I don't want to make things difficult for him. 2D will be easier to program and develop, but animation will be a pain. The reverse would be true for 3D, from what I understand.

So, I ask you. Which kind of Sonic fighting game would you prefer to play?

Visually speaking, I generally prefer 2D over other styles. Can't explain why very well but there's just something about the classic method of drawing every frame from scratch and putting them together that appeals to me. With my limited knowledge of 3D, I can't see 2D animation being any more difficult than 3D when it comes to animating it. It's probably less time consuming to animate it on 3D because you don't need to draw every frame but you are running the risk of making the motion look clunky and unnatural. Then again I guess that can apply to 2D as well.

As an Overall Concept though, I think the best visuals a Sonic fighting game could have would be in 2D or Open World 3D. I'd imagine the latter would be harder to do though because you'd be spending a lot more time on the environments and potentially adding environmental hazards.

Someone got the contact details for SEGA's legal department? I feel like I have a duty to stop this before it goes any further.

Went for 2.5D. As I've seen from Sonic Generation's Classic Sonic levels, plus how the Super Smash Bros. series' fights are fixated in that position, it's a no-brainer.

I went for 3D plainly because I don't see how the Sonic franchise would work on a 2D plane. Characters would have to have fireballs and such.

Considering Sonic Battle worked as a 2D game. I'd say 2D. Last time we got a Sonic fighting game in 3D we got Sonic Fighters -cringe-

2.5D. Like how Dengeki Bunko did it.

Dengeki Bunko was 2D, with 3D stages, like most fighting games nowadays.

If you did any research, you'll know that SEGA actually promotes fan made games.

There's also an event called SAGE which has existed for years and is very well known, yet SEGA have always left it alone:
