Gavvies choice for the first game, and an interesting choice it is I think as I think it would've been A bit "meh" if he just chose something obvious like Streets of rage or sonic it'd be too expected. And I think it could draw interesting conversation as to how many people like it.

Maybe we should have a poll, like what would you score it out of 5? Or something.

Nice idea! I like that alot.I'll Put it on now.:)

Well here's my view incase people hadn't already seen it...

I think the game is a pretty average platformer. It's not terrible, considering it's age but it's nothing special. The one hit death thing also doesn't help along with the sloppy controls and artistically it's not very nice even for a 1991 game.

The rollercoaster level is such a bad idea for this type of game, when you jump sometimes you jump verticaly, other times your sent hurling forwards in an out of control leap into the sunset.

The boss fights though are in my opinion the worst thing in this game, with a rather random game of paper scissors rock as the first boss, one you seem totally powerless to control. It just happens and suddenly you either win or lose with no knowledge of what just happened.

richarddavies

I haven't played it in a while but if I remember right I wasn't too impressed but I'll wait till I have a go tonight before I pass judgement.

It's a rather difficult game and the rollercoaster level doesn't help either. Still I'll try to pass after the first boss before passing judgment.

Ctrl+C Ctrl+V

Average is about the right word, the biggest problem I find is that 1hit KO is really not necessary on a MegaDrive game. Arcade sure because the whole point is to gobble money from you and just overall be a freaking hard game.

On a side note as I actually saw this game in a store today, complete with the hideous art that alot of MegaDrive games had.

Schezo
04-06-2008, 12:55
well, my thoughts on it is no secret by now. I'd give it a 2 in score. It has some potential and the jap version fixed most of the control problems. Could have been a good title, but due to oh so manny flaws it's just a badly made platformer.

Sherlock
04-06-2008, 13:36
I have to agree with Schezo.

For me as someone who isn't that good in playing platformers, the rollercoaster stage is where I can go, not further, because the controls are messed up.
The graphics are a bit too colourful for me (and I DO like colourful normally!), and the music is just annoying.
Difficulty level with One-Hit-Kills is a bit too much for me - I'll give it a 1 out of 5.

Im suprised about this. Just checking up on this on Wikipedia and it has A link to A fan site for the game. Obviously some people must like it. http://marvelland.doublemole.com/

My first impressions are pretty good, it seems quirky

1 hit death thing is no real bother to me, I'm just good that way xD
Actually I'm used to it, I never played many Genesis games that didn't have one hit = death...

I'll give it a longer playthrough when I get home tonight and make up my mind, for me the most annoying thing so far is the opening, the constant bleeping as text appears on the screen, drove me nuts ><

I'm quite surprised that so many people hate it, it's one of my favourite MD games :(

Still, if you don't like the first boss all that much, you'll probably hate the later ones. None of them are really all that conventional.

I like it! Not a 5 star game, but its not as bad as the others make it out to be..

So I've just got to the rollercoaster stage and jesus, it's as annoying as the one on Kid Dracula for the GB. Also that fursona needs to get some grip on his god damn boots.

The first rollercoaster level's quite easy. The later ones get a lot harder.

Really? That's it I'm done. There's fun hard games like Contra and there's boring hard games and this is a boring hard game.

Yeah i've just played it a lot more to give it another chance. There's no feel of accomplishment and it's only hard becuase the controls are woeful.

Oh and the waterfall level? I thought I was gonna have an epileptic fit!

I guess I just can't play poorly made games.

Also yes Contra is fun and awesome.

Don't get me wrong, its not because its tough (I love meh shmups & Gaiden) I just really don't like it...though maybe its just not from my favoured era of games..

Edit: Its on the MD?!? xD Dammit!

Woah easy kids! In fairness we all play what someone decides, the whole point is to see what we think of it. They're just opinions.

Gavvie
04-06-2008, 15:28
Yeah, I'm not fond of Contra either. It's a bit like Castlevania, if I'm being honest, in that it's a game series I'd probably love, if I could actually play it for any sustained length of time :p

Still, I don't think we should do a MD game next time around, we should pick a different format.

A good idea, my problem is I don't have a dreamcast and have problems getting saturn games (emulating them is tough too)

So ideally it'd be mega drive...game gear...cart based consoles?

You'll have whatever game someone chooses hehe:).

Gavvie

Yeah, I'd guess so. You could do Sega CD as well, so long as somebody has the CD image because they're quite hard to get a hold of.

richarddavies
04-06-2008, 15:47
Yeah theres plenty to choose from. Master system, MD, Snes,NES, Mega cd is even easy to get hold of to emulate.(Theres A game on there im really considering choosing if people have no problem playing them),PC engine, even Jaguar(though I can only think of 1 game worth playing on it). theres loads to choose from.

So is it all retro, or just SEGA retro? =]
I know we're not allowed to post guides on how to emulate here, but maybe someone could email/pm a guide if someone does choose a saturn-type game? ^^"

richarddavies

With my mega cd all I needed was Gens and the bios files. The games worked fine.
Just retro I think really. Opens up our choices.

Hmm..Jaguar sounds good, though I've never found an emulator for it, and I've never heard of any games on it worth playing :p

I liked alien vs Predator and Tempset. Everything else sucked though. There is A working emu for it. Can't remember what it's called off the top of my head.

Contra is pretty fun. Actually, I have great memories of playing it as a kid. It would be a nice choice *hint*.

About the game in question, and back on topic, I haven't got the time to try it during the week so I'll save my opinions for the weekend. I'm not sure if I should try it though... You guys don't seem to find it all that good...-_-

Gavvie
04-06-2008, 23:56
I think you should play it. Everybody's entitled to their own opinions, and you can't really voice yours if you don't play it. It'd be a bit biased..and unfair :(

Sherlock

I even tried it myself, even though I despise most platformer games. This one was a torture for me, as well, and as I said, I already was stuck in that first rollercoaster stage... I didn't even try to go further than that after wasting about 20 lives just in that stage (yes, with Game Overs).
If you count away my unability to play platformers, it would be a 2 or 3, but in my case it's a plain 1.

Edit:
Also, if I may suggest you for discussing next games/systems/etc. to open a new thread entitled "Retro Gaming: Discussions" or something?
It's just a bit irritating...

I agree, we don't want hundereds of these threads popping up all over the place that will only be active for a week. Keep them all in one. I'll ask Mark to edit the title of this one to just Retro Gaming.

Sherlock
05-06-2008, 00:09
The problem with that would be that there would be no rating-poll anymore for the following games.

Edit: The already mentioned sub-section would be a great idea, I think.

No big loss, i'll ask him to get rid of it in that case. You can rate out of 5 in your posts.

Sherlock
05-06-2008, 00:12
True that.

I guess it's not like the thread starter (richarddavis I think?) actually wanted it to turn out, but better have a clean board with a huge thread instead of small and not even actual clatter in this sub section, ne?

Yeah, very true. The thread would die after a week anyway once a new game is picked.

p_nut_uk
05-06-2008, 00:15
Why don't we just go back to the Original retro gaming club thread?

Sherlock
05-06-2008, 00:17
That would be most likely because it doesn't really fits into the Radio SEGA-subsection.

Mark sais he allowed all the extra threads so no change mates.

I gave Talmits 3 out of 5. Thought it was ok but nothing speacial. Don't know if it was just me though but I didn't find it nearly as hard as some people make out. I did like the power ups like the dragonwings and the little cloning multi man thing, but the level design is pretty bland and I got sick of seein those mole men. got up to world 3 then left it.

p_nut_uk
05-06-2008, 11:57
On the later levels the dragon wings can be a pain becuase you end up jumping into roof spikes:P

richarddavies
05-06-2008, 12:13
Made it easy on the open level ones though. I just jump high then glided to the end.

Rayne
05-06-2008, 13:05

Didn't have the good graphics of some other MD games, but yeah, not too bad ^^

richarddavies

I did think the rock, paper, scissors game was A bit weird. I didn't like how you don't actually pick what you want.

Tails_1986
05-06-2008, 20:08
The game is nice although a bit hard. It's fun to play in short segments. The graphics may not meet the requirements of other games, but are not too bad.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but since I was picked to choose the next game, I've decided to go for Captain Havoc for the Mega Drive. Guess we'll continue on the platforming trend.

Yeah, I hope noone will pick the very well known franchises.

Also, Gavvie, your pick was obscure, definitely, but it wasn't the best. Besides, if I wouldn't suck so much at playing platformers, I'm sure I'd rated it higher. ^^
