I haven't played a lot of shooters on the Genesis, but the only one I liked was Gunstar Heroes. To me it was very amusing.

I love the futuristic feel to it. I feel like I've played something very similar to it on the Sony Playstation.
My two favourite shooters on the MD has to be Thunderforce IV and Sub-Terrania. The music in Sub-Terrania is really worth mentioning! Composed by none others then Jesper Kyd.

For me it's Forgotten Worlds! Although it's quite difficult especially with a keyboard.
Probotector, Ranger X, Or Alien Soldier. I Can't Decide!
Ok, after much thought: Probotector!
I would say Ranger X, Gunstar Heroes, Thunder Force 4 and the japanese only Gley Lancer.

Musha is the best shmup on the Mega Drive by far.
Shamefully I enjoyed Alien Storm  the Kamikaze robot was hilarious

I found Alien storm quite hard to get to grips with, mainly cos' it made me think of golden Axe in the way it played! [Apart from the Doom style shooting bits!]

Hey, don't be ashamed, I loved Alien Storm as well! It was one of my favourite MD games, that wasn't Sonic or anything as obvious as that.

For me it's Gunstar Heroes all the way. I haven't played many shooters on the Mega Drive to compare much though.

Gotta agree. Gunstars is a fantastic game. I urge anyone to play it who hasn't. And to be honest I agree with just about every other game mentioned is a good choice as well.

Pretty much this, I haven't really played any other Mega Drive shooters, other than Gunstar Heroes.

Gunstar Heroes is the best 2-player co-op action/shooter on the Genesis. Sorry Contra Hard Corps.

Would Bimini Run count as a shooter?
Gunstar Heroes will always be the greatest MD shooter. I now play it on a emulator (you'll never guess my year of birth :P) and it's great. HAIL GUNSTAR HEROES!!!!

I think Mega Turrican is worthy of a mention. Brilliant fun, excellent detail and could even pass for a true sequel. Plus, the grappling hook is wicked :)

Its on VC right now, might give that a try.

You may have played Gunner's Heaven, which was a near clone of Gunstar Heroes for the PSX.
Gunstar Heroes is great, but it's more of a run-and-gun than shooter. There are too many great Genesis shooters out there -- Gairies, Thunder Force III, Granada, Super Fantasy Zone, Elemental Master, etc. Granada is the one I go to more than any other though as it's just so much fun to play. :)

Actually I was referring to Thunder Force IV. I didn't realize you posted in between. I like Gunstar Heroes as well, but I've never been a huge fan.

Well, in terms of run and gun my favourite is Mercs. For true shmups I'd say Truxton(Tatsujin).
Gunstar heroes for Run and gun, no doubt.
For a more true Shmup game, I'd say Musha Aleste, with Zero Wing and Gley Lancer as runner-ups.

Zero Wing.. Someone Set Up Us The Bomb = Bomb The US Upset Someone
But yeah..why hasn't anyone said Zero Tolerance? Or Contra: Hard Corps? :P

Here's an awesome shooter that was only released in Japan
"Eliminate Down"

Ok SEGA Mega Drive has quite a bunch of wonderful shooters. For me the Top 5 best shooters were Gunstar Heroes, GleyLancer, Thunder Force IV, Eliminate Down and Steel Empire a long forgotten super rare but excellent shooter that no one mentioned :(

I remember Steel Empire I think my friend had that game although I never played it but have heard its a good shooter. I also seem to remember it got ported to the GBA years later but i heard the port had lots of slowdown in it and was not very good.

Yep Eliminate down is really hard to get, I am on bargain of a Mint condition copy for 160 pounds! Expensive but greeeaaaat game!
As for Steel Empire also hard to get, one of my jewels (Japanese version 150$) is a wonderful game, so well developed in every term but the port wasn't satisfying enough as the original was.
