View Full Version : Your worst Sonic levels for each game

I always find that there's one level you hate in the 16-bit Sonic games, for whatever reason, wether it be too hard or just annoying. Try to include a small reason for your decision and please keep it to 16-bit games, here's mine:
Sonic: Labyrinth Zone - The boss can be tricky sometimes, especially with little or no rings.
Sonic 2: Hill Top Zone - Lots of lava and caving in bits!
Sonic 3: Marble Garden Zone - Lots of crushing spikes and the unpredictability of the spinny thing when it hits the ground.
Sonic & Knuckles: Sandopolis Zone Act 2 - The ghosts!
Sonic CD: Wacky Workbench Zone - Not a bad level but the bouncing can get annoying.
Sonic Spinball: Robotnik's Ship - It can take ages to do this level! Especially as you can get thrown out of the boss.

Can I ask why only 16-BIT?
Let's see...
Sonic 1: Labyrinth Zone - The Zone is just boring, I hate the music and the boss can be an ass.
Sonic 2: Death Egg Zone - Last boss annoys me but I can do it ok.
Sonic CD: Metallic Madness Act 2 - Goes on way too long. Gets boring.
^ Cos this is the Mega Drive/Genesis forum? :p
Anywho, here's mine:
Sonic 1 - Labyrinth Zone
Always hated the water levels in Sonic games, and this one is probably the worst.
Sonic 2 - Oil Ocean Zone
I mentioned why in another thread, so you'll have to hunt that one down.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - The Special Stages
The actual game levels weren't so bad, but the special stages were pure hell in a bottle.

Can I ask why only 16-BIT?
Becuase there are so many bad levels in the later games I couldn't decide just one.

Sonic 2 - Wing Fortress
Has a confusing level layout and I never enjoyed timed jump sequences over bottomless pits.
Sonic 2 - Death Egg
This a bit unfair as I don't dislike the level per se, it's just that I find it's Sonic & Knuckles representation a lot better.
Sonic 1 - Labrynth Zone
Sonic & Knuckles - Sandopolis Zone
Sonic 3 - Carnivale Nights Zone

Sonic 1 - Spring Yard Zone: I don't hate it, but it's a little bit annoying and so is the boss.
Sonic 2 - Metropolis Zone: Two words... SPIKED STARS. Need I say more?
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Sandopolis Zone Act 2: same as p_nut, ghosts!
Sonic CD - Wacky Workbench: can't quite explain it, but I find it annoying.

I'm just gonna pick something that is currently bugging me cause I can't bring myself to say negative things about the Sonic games of old:
Sonic Rush Adventure - All the hidden island stages. They just suck.
The Captain
30-06-2008, 23:27
Sonic the Hedgehog: Labyrinth Zone - Fantastic zone, just the least fantastic of the lot.
Sonic the Hedgehog: Hill Top Zone - While it's as good as the other zones in this game, it doesn't feel as special for some reason.
Sonic the Hedgehog: Carnival Night Zone - Annoying. A chore to finish. And it took me ages to get past THE BARREL. :P
Sonic Spinball: Lava Powerhouse - The least good looking/well designed of the four.
Sonic 3D: Spring Stadium - FECK OFF

Sonic 1: Spring Yard -- Doesn't flow quite as well as the other levels; obstacles aren't as interesting for all the stops in the action.
Sonic 2: Sky Chase -- I think Sonic 2 is a perfect game, and Sky Chase has its place in the game and the story, but it's not terribly interesting to play.
Sonic 3: Angel Island -- Ugly level, bad music, dull enemies, too long, etc.

How can you hate Angel Island ? The music is AWESOME, and the level is reflecting how Sonic improved !
Sonic 1: Labyrinth Zone - Act 3 to be accurate, because it took ages before I understood I should NOT hit Egghead. (No pun intended with "it took ages"...)
Sonic 2: Probably Metropolis Zone before I knew it by heart, but nowadays I think Sonic 2 is excellent from EHZ to the Death Egg.
Sonic 3: No doubt on it: Act 2 of the goddamn Carnival Night Zone. "Do a effing barrel up-and-down you [censored]!!"
Sonic & Knuckles: Sandopolis Act 2. If you don't have Sonic with a lightning shield (or Super Sonic/Hyper Sonic), it's a PAIN.
Sonic 3D: Without any doubt the boss of Volcano Valley. Gah. It's just insane.
Sonic Spinball: Showdown level, for its annoying boss. "Push the button"... >_> ?
That's pretty much everything.

What's even worse is when you're playing it on Mega Collection and you're all like "What the christ? I could do this level as a kid why the hell can't I do it now?!" go on gamefaqs and give yourself a kick for being so dumb.

Why the hate against Angel Island?:( It's a very nice level.
I can't even believe I haven't posted on this thread!
The frustrating levels for me were:
Sonic 1: Labyrinth Zone Act 3. Took me days to figure out how to pass it!
Sonic 2: Metropolis Zone. Despite the music, the layout and the enemies were bad enough.
Sonic 3: Icecap Zone Act 2. Irritating to the neck. I was able to finish it in 5 days! O_O!
Sonic & Knuckles: Sandopolis Zone Act 2. Damn those ghosts!!!!!!!! -_-*

If you didn't have a lightning shield, Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic (if you finished the game full throttle) , turned the lights on in time or playing on Debug Mode! XD (because of the switches), it was almost like playing Hell Sandopolis Act 1! (there's Sandopolis Zone and Hell Sandopolis, that I made up :P)

How can the super forms be annoying? Unless, of course, if you count the times when you just want to jump and activate them. But I'm quite fond of them ... specially Hyper Sonic.

Makes the game too easy for me. Plus, I aim for ring count.

Everyone does. :P Besides, mine was...450, I think. Yeah but you guys do it the easy way by staying super and you can't get a true top score if your ring count slowly goes down.

Played Ristar on the PSP :P

Why the hate against Angel Island?:( It's a very nice level.
Have you seen UK Resistance's Blue Skies campaign? :) It doesn't jibe at all with what had become a sort of template for a Sonic game, with the first level being all bright and cheery and showcasing Sonic's speed. Angel Island does none of that. There's other problems with it with the dull layout, grainy colors, and that stupid ugly monkey, but that's what kills it for me.
DarkHedge
05-07-2008, 09:43
Yes, Angel Island is less cheery than Green Hill Zone but hey, I thought that for a first level, it was an insanely good one ! I mean, in the middle of the stage you have the landscape radically modificated, you have minibosses, you have... 16-bit powaaa !!! xD

Sonic 2 : Chemical Plant Zone Act 2. :(
I'm guessing because of the rising water part?

Oh man, if you don't rush up, this level is a piece of cake. If the water is at your level, stop moving, wait a bit for the water to raise up enough so you can't get out by jumping, then continue peacefully. If nothing's effed up, it's fine.

Chemical plant was actually really fun, I only find bad the last levels in sonic 2, and Sonic 3 has no bad levels, I think they're all awesome, Hydro City was excellent, what the heck...
I say the classic Casino levels in each sonic, I had ENOUGH with Sonic Spinball, no need to remember me of that horrible game every time I have to play another sonic -_-U

I enjoyed 3D Blast, granted I wasn't expecting a fast game. Though on the MegaDrive I thought the Special Stages were too easy. From what I've seen the Saturn port looks a like a 3D version of Sonic 2's special stages.
EDIT: I realised what I just did, lol.
Worst MD level in my opinion is Oil Ocean. For some reason I have always despised that level.

How? I doubt the Saturn version is much different to the MegaDrive version.
Gameplay wise it isn't, except the Saturn's special stages were better, and the graphics obviously benefited from the game being on a CD as opposed to a cartridge.
The MD version did have the better soundtrack though :p

Most won't agree XD.
In my opinion, Jun Senoue > Richard Jacques. Whilst Jacques is a good composer, his interpretation of how Sonic should sound was very wrong.

Sonic 1: Labyrinth (I get lost and run out of breath almost everytime.)
Sonic 2: Wing Fortress (I keep falling off some areas.)
Sonic 3: Ice Cap (A bit boring, in my opinion.)
Sonic & Knuckles: Sky Sanctuary (A bit boring, again. Also, I hate the Metropolis Boss.
Sonic 3D: Gene Gadget (Another Confusing level.)
Sonic CD: Quartz Quadrant (A bit short ad not fun enough.)
That's all the 16-bit games I can think of.
