View Full Version : Sonic The Hegehog 2 Memories

I decided to dust off my copy of Sonic Mega Collection and play Sonic 2 all the way though no cheats...

Boy it brought back memories... One in particular was "evil tails". I just know someone else knows what I'm talking about. In Sonic 2, Tails really didn't have much impact in the main game. So if I got stuck playing Tails, I would just play him "evil". Nothing more obnoxious than tails purposely hitting the boss you Sonic goes right through him and possibly into peril. :)

A few other things I remembered in addition to "evil tails"...
The Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Up, Up, Down Down code. I always wondered why they put it in there. It removes the TM on the Sega logo. It changes places in the game where it said Tails to Miles. Was this a way to settle a developer's argument of Tails' name?
Floating Tails. Love watching tails float walk onto the screen--sometimes not able to land properly. I got a bit of this in Casino Night zone and Oil Ocean.
Blast Processing (WELCO METOT HENEX TLEVEL). If there was any level in the game that reminded me of that old Sega ad campaign, it was Chemical Plant. Always fun to race across the screen so fast you nearly outrace the background. :)
Sonic's abilities throughout history. I played the game on my XBOX 360 (Original XBOX game) and found myself wanting to scroll the screen right with the right analog stick. :) Also found myself trying the little invincible burst (jump while jumping) like in Sonic 3. If they can add a Spin Dash to Sonic 1 (Genesis GBA), why not the invincible jump and perhaps some of the cool power up shields from Sonic 3 to Sonic 2? Love that magnetic rings shield.
The chaos emerald discrepancy. So why did they decide to up Sonic 1's chaos emeralds from 6 to 7?
Sound Test 10... I still remember the first time I heard it and realized I hadn't heard it at all during the game. Also reminded me of that "Nick Arcade" episode with Emerald Hill and Sonic 1's Starlight Zone music.Anyhow, just felt like sharing my trip down memory lane. Thanks for putting up this internet radio site. It took me some trickery, but it has been quite pleasant to listen the station to on my XBOX 360 while I play various games on it.

Some great memories mate, I remember playing for hours with the debug cheat, making random platforms to jump up to get a stupid amount of rings, or throwing springs everywhere. Infact what I did a lot was place a few hundred rings in the same spot, so it looked like a single ring but when I collected it, I ended up with a few hundred.

A few years ago I spent the best part of four hours time attacking the final boss until I had a perfect time and perfect technique to beat the boss.

I'll also never forget 19 65 09 17 level select cheat. First read it in the UK Sonic comic as a kid, always remembered it, because really my own birthday is 19 85 09 27. I just remember 20 years and 10 days less than my own. :)

(How the hell did you get RadioSEGA working on 360?! PM ME PLEASE! I need to know!)

I wish i had a media centre comp so i could listen to this station on the 360. Sonic 2 was infact the first game i got in Christmas 1992 with my megadrive. After a year of playing sonic 1 at my cousins i ran upstairs and played sonic 2 for the rest of christmas holidays! Awesome Game!

Achieving Super Sonic the proper way

THAT pit on Mystic Cave

Thinking Wing Fortress was the final level because Death Egg wasn't mentioned in the manual and at the time couldn't get past a certain part. (If you must know it's after the wind tunnels with the series of collapsing plaforms.

Figuring out 12 years later the significance of the cheat codes, even though I had memorised them not long after playing it for the first time.

19 65 09 17 - Or 1965 09 17 or 17th September 1965 (Naka's Birthday, I think)
01 09 09 02 01 01 02 04 - Or 1992 11 24 or 24th November 1992 (Sonic two's day)

Not worked out what 04 01 02 06 is yet though.

Finally finding out what that extra music was thanks to the internet

(How the hell did you get RadioSEGA working on 360?! PM ME PLEASE! I need to know!)

Alright I opened my big mouth. I'll post here for the benefit of all RadioSEGA fans.

I wish i had a media centre comp so i could listen to this station on the 360.

Ironically I tried with Windows Media Center built into Windows Vista Ultimate and didn't have any luck getting the Windows Media feed of RadioSega working. I had to use the ShoutCast (WinAmp)feed without Windows Media Center.

Here is what I did to get RadioSEGA working on my XBOX 360...
Download TwonkyMedia (http://www.twonkyvision.de/) (I know its a trial version--I ended up buying it once I found it worked for me and the trial expired). Its available for Windows, Linux and MacOS X so most everyone with a computer should be covered. I got it working on Windows and then set it up again via Linux when I bought the program.
Access the web interface. It is running on port 9000 by default so on the system running TwonkyMedia, http://localhost:9000 should work.
Configure TwonkyMedia's server name. Be sure that you have a server name that the XBOX 360 likes. I haven't tested thouroughly but I don't think it likes short names and/or lower case. HOMESERVER works fine for me.
Configure TwonkyMedia shoutcast support. In the "Internet Radio" section of the web config, be sure that ShoutCast is checked and at least one of the built in types are checked.
Create a M3U file for RadioSega. Probably the easiest way is to install WinAmp (http://www.winamp.com/), open the ShoutCast feed (play it for a second or two), go into the playlist editor, file and save as and call your file "Radio Sega". Save this file in the location you have configured for All/Music media within TwonkyMedia. On Windows, it has a default location for music default configured to C:\Documents and Settings\<your account name>\My Documents\My Music On linux, no locations are configured so you'll have to add one.
Restart TwonkyMedia. The changes you probably made require a restart. There is a restart button within the web interface. And now for the XBOX 360 Part:
Go to the Media page and select Music.
Select Computer
Answer "Yes, continue" to the "Have you downloaded and installed media sharing software on your computer?" question
It will then say "Searching for Windows Based PCs" (yes it will find Linux or Windows if its running TwonkyMedia). <Your ServerName> TwonkyMedia: 1 should show up.
Select your TwonkyMedia server. If you click and nothing happens, the XBOX probably didn't like your server name. Try something like "HOMESERVER" in all caps and try again. Maybe even restart the XBOX 360.
It now proceeds to a media selection screen. Select "Saved Playlists". You'll find on the right side, "Radio Sega". Press the stick right and click on Radio Sega.
Click on "Play Saved Playlist". You should now be hearing some Sega goodness in the XBOX 360 Music Player.Screen Shots:

I find that its most fun to listen to RadioSEGA while playing games in the XBOX arcade. Also works well to break the monotony of the town and mission music on Sonic The Hedgehog 2k6 (not to mention the loading screens!). Love when I luck out and the music matches. Sometimes I also feel inspired to make a request based on the gameplay. On the down side, Original XBOX games will need to be configured silent within the game. Otherwise you hear a mix of RadioSEGA and the game (i.e. when I tried playing Sonic Mega Collection). Also works great starting the feed by pressing the X menu button (the big circular lighted green X) and selecting the Radio Sega playlist from "Select Music" anytime during your games.

So there you have it. At the time I got this to work, I used TwonkyMedia 4.1 Don't ask me any in depth support questions. This is "as is" and you're own your own. I also hear tale that it may be possible to do what I did with TwonkyMedia with a free program called TVersity (http://www.tversity.com), but I didn't see it worth my time. Besides, I really wanted to load it on my dedicated Linux box instead of a Windows box anyway.

Oh and that reminds me of my out of the box disappointment with Sonic The Hedgehog 2... In the commercial (http://www.tv.com/uservideos/?action=video_player&id=ISA0k2H75bgLuzA), they showed an awesome title screen. I was so looking forward to seeing it with my friend on Sonic Tuesday. I was sadly disappointed. The final title screen was more animated, but the characters were poorly drawn. I would have stuck with the other title screen. At least the cool title screen stayed in the manual. Ha ha....

I can just remember being so excited about Sonic 2 coming out, Sonic 1 was my first Sonic game and at the time one of the few games I played all the way through (although my Dad managed to complete it before me, but I beat him to it on Sonic 2, happy days)

the furthest back memory i can think of for sonic 2 was how i couldn't get through a certain part in (i think it is anyway) the metropolis zone where you have to run up a curve and jump down to a platform to keep moving on. anyways i remember how i always asked my dad to get through it back then (i was only 5 or 6 at the time so that should explain my lack of skill then) nowadays, dad can't have a hope of surpassing my skill.

I remember the game was the main talking point between me and my friends when I was a young lad in middle school I mean who could forget Sonic 2sday. I had to wait until christmas day 1992 before I could own the game. Two player was great fun with friends and still is, oh yes and who could forget that pit. I fell into that thing twice in a row.

Even to this day it stands the test of time and is still a great game to play.

None of the levels really hit it for me until your in the air with Tail's plane. The ending to me though is unforgettable, the way Sonic falls down, the music and the screens showing everyone watching as the Death Egg is defeated. It still remains with me to this day as the best ending to a game I have ever seen. Was even better if you finished it as Super Sonic. ^_^

I am also a fan of the Sky Chaze Zone. Destroying badniks while on top of the Tornado... such fond memories of that level! Just one question, though: Why so short?
And I agree with 32X, the ending is unforgettable!

I'm pretty much a fan of the whole game and although I grumbled about the difficulty, especially of the final battle, as a kid I'm glad it was as it was. (a lot of games are too soft these days imo)

All I remember about Sonic 2 from when I first played it is actually getting the game (it was on a Wednesday, can't remember if it was the Wednesday after Sonic 2sday or not). I was well chuffed (as any kid of my age should have been). My parents remember me unlocking Super Sonic for the first time and me shouting 'he's turned yellow!' at the top of my pre-pubescent voice. I wish I remembered that though...

I remember when games master used to be on and a guy showed how he could complete the first lvl of sonic 2 in 23 seconds, me and my old m8 tried for hours to copy his technique and get it right!

Finally we both managed to re-create his 23 seconds, we don't know of anyone who has beaten this record doing it LEGIT of course!

Anyway would be interesting to see if anyone can beat 23 seconds on the very first level! Dust off your controllers and see what time you come up with. ;)

Just been looking on YouTube actually. Seems like no one can beat 23 seconds, but this guy uses the same technique as I copied from ye old Gamesmaster episode i had on tape.

I did the game with out cheats first and I liked it better than Sonic 1. You can turn to Super Sonic--thats the best part, but you can't move too fast in the Wing Fortress or you'll fall into a pit.

Sonic 2 is imo the best sonic game ever made. Super Sonic was so awesome, and the bonus levels are probably my favorites from the entire series. I loved rolling around Chemical Plant Zone at extreme speed, when I was a kid, and I'ts still really funny. That part where the Megamac rises and you have to get up before it kills you is one of the most claustrophobic events of any game I've played.

That 23 second video is genius. I can't think of any way to beat that time..but then I don't think I would be able to emulate it, either.

Wow, 23 secs... THAT'S good. I don't think it's actually possible to beat that... Not without a cheat, anyway.

MY SONIC 2 MEMORIES...

SUPER SONIC - Well, I didn't shout "he's turned yellow!!! @_@" when I did it, but I DID let out a whoop at finally having beaten the &#^%!$ special stages. Mind you, I got SS in Sonic 3 first; those special stages seem a bit easier. ^_^

THE MYSTIC CAVE PIT OF DOOM - I don't think anyone who's properly played Sonic 2 will ever forget that pit. In fact, I still go veeery carefully when I'm in Mystic Cave, Act 2. Not that I need to; I always stay on the "high road" now, which of course brings you up over the pit, all the way to the far right of the level, then down & a little to the left.

THE CARNIVAL NIGHT ZONE "ELEVATOR" - Yeah, I know, this one's from Sonic 3; sue me. Anyway, once again, NO ONE who encountered that &^#!%#$ "elevator" will ever forget it. I actually found rather unusual way to get past it. I have a Turbo-enabled controller, so I simply grabbed a water shield, held down the Turbo jump button, and watched Sonic bounce his way straight through the elevator. Of course, that method DID get me stuck in the right-hand wall on two occasions...
And to think, it took me FIVE YEARS to figure out that all I had to do was press Up/Down in time with the elevator's bounces... >_<

Hey, on a different note, I can't actually prove it right now, but I swear to God that in Sonic 1, I actually beat Green Hill Zone, Act 1, in 29 seconds, NO CHEATS. (And it was the Genesis original, so no spin dash either.) I was pretty happy with myself. ^_^

That Pit on Mystic Cave Zone has got once or twice to but I also try to stay high up on that zone now. It took me a few weeks to learn about Carnival Night Zone and that's because I looked it up. On Green Hill Zone i'm not sure about act 1 but ive beaten act 2 in 29 seconds before.

Actually, I only found out about everyone's "fight" with the elevator years later, when I started surfing the web and joined some Sonic forums. But I understand why everybody found it hard, although I didn't...

As for Sonic 2 memories, I also remember the first time I turned Super Sonic for the first time! I freaked out for just a second or two, cause all did was jump and Sonic turned all yellow and spiky! Actually, that's something I liked about Sonic 3: you had to double jump in order to turn Super, enabling you to play in regular form for as long as you wanted.

Not exactly true, if you were Knuckles you had to turn super in order to climp up walls or glide through certain parts of the level.

Indeed, mate, I forgot about that. I was only thinking about Sonic since it was the only character available in Sonic 2 who could turn super.
With that said, I just remembered we should arrange for some online matches of Sonic 2/3 on the Kailera server.

I know that this thread is about Sonic 2, but since everyone is talking about the elevator in Carnival Night I'll also going to give my two cents. The first time I played this game was on Sonic Jam and had no problems whatsoever with this particular part. Years later I played it on Sonic Mega Collection and this time I had to look up on the internet because I didn't remember how to pass it. Shame ...

Well, Sonic 2 wasnīt the first game I played, it was Sonic 3. I was quite surprised when he turned into Super Sonic. I remember when I was 7 years old. Carnival Night was the first time I turned into it, and the most famous elevator which I never passed until I was 11.

Memories of Sonic 2... I played the game after Sonic 3, it was and is a great game, with tons of levels, and when I play it now, reminds me of my childhood.
So I was surprised when I finished the game with Sonic 3, because I never expected the game would have only 6 zones.. * I finished Sonic 2 first, that elevator left me tired at that time *

The most terrifying part was in the zone Death Egg, battling with Eggman, I always lost in the final boss, when I needed jump properly without touching the spines of his fists. Now, it isnīt a problem, but that time was memorable. ^^

Because it was the first game I played, I never understood what those gems were, and why a yellow hedgehog.

I didnīt know that if you recover all the seven chaos emeralds, Sonic could be Super Sonic.

So I never had the least notion that in Sonic 2, Sonic could become Super Sonic as well and not in Sonic 1.

The problem was that I played the games disorderly. So I never understood the story:
Sonic 3; Sonic 2; Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 1. XD

I was only 5 years old when I entered into the Sonic World, I never understood anything.

Ah Sonic 2. I still play it now, though they could have done a bit more work with Super Tails, (all that happens is that Flickies fly around him), but I hated that Carnival Night thing too, back to Sonic 2...

When I first unlocked Super Sonic, I got up with my cousin who was playing as Tails and we did a dance to the Super Sonic music, and then the sudden realisation that you only had 50 seconds till it ran out. We got stroppy and cried till I got enough rings and we would repeat the dance.

Happy days.

I remember the shock of finding out about Super Sonic. My friend in school told me about it. He said, you had to get all 7 Chaos Emeralds to get him but he also said there was a cheat. So being the lazy git that I am, I used the cheat and it just made the game even more awesome then it already was. I did try to get all 7 emeralds after but my gaming skills were not up to much back then, I am trying again years later thanks to the SEGA Mega Drive Collection on PSP, since that has a save feature which is really helpful.

Also big hands down for the two-player race mode. I remember the look on my friends face when he got near then end of Emerald Hill in first place and I hit a TV with the swap position power up. It was like the perfect two player game back in the day. To this day its still a laugh.

Well, when I first played I had to go through a second time to get everything (luckily you can replay levels and the giant rings are always there the second time).

I can now go through it once and get everything without getting a bad ending. Isn't easy though and you do have to know the location of every giant ring sometimes to pull it off.

I always had more dificulty getting the emeralds in Sonic 2 than in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. In Sonic 2 I had some trouble getting them past the fifth emerald, while in Sonic 3 & Knuckles I usually didn't have much trouble save for that last emerald. It still haunts me to this day (it's the only emerald I can't get 100% of the time).

I'm the same. I found Sonic 2's special stages much harder than 3 and Knuckles. I have once done the game the whole way through and getting all the emeralds in one go. Bloody hard though. The last few required panic fuelled jumps and turns, but nothing compared with Sonic CD special stages!

Anyway, my memories of Sonic 2. I remembered a friend of my brother's had it on launch day and I was only 8! I was so giddy and I had to wait the whole pain staking month till Christmas, and then I got it and it was such a huge leap from the original and of course co-op with tails on the second pad! And sky chase was my favourite level! I could go on forever! Oh! and the hardest sonic boss in the 16-bit era!

As for S3&K, I usually get the first 7 around Hidrocity Act 2 or Marble Garden Act 1. The later 7 are all gathered up around Sandopolis/Lava Reef.

Damn I loved this game, I think it is one of my favourite games ever. Just playing it over and over again, week after week either on my own or with friends.

Thinking back though, I never even tried to get all the emeralds. Maybe I should go back to it now and do that!

Wow..the game's been out for nearly 16 years and you've never tried to collect all 7 emeralds? You're probably one of the few people I know who's done that..or not done it, whichever way you wanna cut it.

Indeed you should! Playing as Super Sonic, even if not as exciting as in S3&K, in my opinion, is pure gold! And it's quite a feeling to get all the Emeralds!

I fall into this category I never found the bonus game much fun so I never really gave a shit.

Yeah, but you still collected all 7 emeralds, didn't you?

Nope, only game I've ever collected all 7 emeralds when it's part of some minigame is Sonic Rush Adventure.

Its just something that never really occured for me to do while I was playing it the first time around. I was just happy to be making it through the levels.

I always get the first seven emeralds by Marble Garden Act 1. The last seven I finish collecting them in Sandopolis Act 1. Except for Knuckles ... with him I get all the emeralds by Mushroom Hill Act 2.

I remember my dad used to play with me through Emerald Hill Zone until I finally became good enough to make it on my own. Casino Night Zone has to be one of my favorite levels. I'd spend like all my time just trying to win at the slot machines. Sky Chase Zone was pretty awesome because of the music. I loved to use Tails as my bait, I'd throw him out at the boss and then back up while he attacked and got killed. Heh.

What do I remember the most on Sonic 2? The Chemical Plant Zone, the Super Sonic transformation and the ending... Soooo good memories... *singing the ending tune* Anyway, that's all I can remember.

I remember Chemical Plant (awesome theme, awesome music, awesome speed), and Aquatic Ruins, the only waterlevel I kinda liked. I remember the introduction of Tails. And yeah. The effing hard Casino Stage boss.

I hated Chemical Plant Zone. It wasn't bad as far as second zones go (that accolade goes to Sky High Zone, the second level on Sonic 2 on Master System), but it still wasn't fun.

Worst level for me on Sonic 2 MD was Oil Ocean. Completely forgettable.

I have never been able to beat eggman last boss!!!:P

Well, the greatest moment i remeber was that when i was a kid, with my friends, we say that Tails was a CAT; i really do not know why we didn't think of him as a fox, we just say : I will be Sonic and you will be the orange cat!!!

I hate the fact Sonic team made Tails yellowXD

Yeah, that's a point, he has yellowed out a bit in his later years, hasn't he? Very odd.
