Tails_1986 gave me the idea for this thread.

I'm sure we've all made really stupid mistakes on Sonic games that we wonder how we did or been stuck in a certain spot for ages only to find out there was a very simple way to get passed it. So what's yours?

I'm sure one of the common ones will be Carnival Night Zone Act 2's BARREL OF DOOM which got me as well XD.

I dunno if it's embarassing but on Sonic Heroes I couldn't get any further than that dinosaur/jungle level, I just couldn't do the rope swing and that alone stopped me playing it indefinately:(.

Labyrinth Zone Act 3 from Sonic 1. Took me days (yeah, days!!!!) to figure it out!!! And of course Carnival Night Zone Act 2... Damn you, Barrel of Doom!!!!! XD

I find sonic more frustrating than embarrasing..

Constantly falling through the floor on next gen games...annoying, but not embarrasing ^__^"

Pit falls seem to be common one with me on the 3D ones after Adventure 2, mainly because of mistiming jumps XD. Also, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle had that annoying jump glitch where you press A once to do a jump and would just homing attack into a pit XD.

I went through a Sonic Binge on June 23rd which included Sonic 1 (XBLA), Sonic 2 (XBLA), Sonic 360 and Sonic Adventure 2 battle.

No Matter how hard I tried I couldn't get passed the boss on labyrinth, it took five attempts to beat special stage 4 on Sonic 2 (and as such I only made it to 4 emeralds) and I couldn't complete cannon's core.

I've 180'd SA2 4 times now, and played the final story more times than I can count. Not getting through cannon's core is just embarrasing.

On the plus side I managed to take top spot on my friends leaderboard on Sonic 2.

If we're talking about frustrations I recall the many failed attempts to S rank Crisis City as Sonic. It's the rings, always your rings, that fail you.

Embarrassing... I have ONE, and only one in paricular: a bug that PISSED ME OFF while playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles (original cartridges, not emulator). I was with Knuckles, and I didn't make it in time in the underwater section of Launch Base A2. When Knux died (at this exact moment), the life counter went -1, and when he disappeared, the counter went -1 again ! And I had only 2 lives left. At this moment, it was exactly like this:
"O_O...
...GODDAMNIT !"

I'd have to agree to Carnival Zone Act 2, where the Barrel of Doom lies. And has also been said Labyrinth Zone Act 3, where even the Spin Dash added in the GBA version can't help.

I would say another embarrassing moment would be in Sonic and The Secret Rings, but I really don't like that game so I tend to forget about it completely.

Anyway, the only other thing I can think of is the time in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, when I kept trying to get the 2 extra hits on the Boss of Angel Island Zone Act 2 before the bridge fall, and ended up falling off when using Sonic, after an hour of dying and retrying I stop and just took the time to beat him.

Kinda stupid, I know but I was 6 and was too impatient.

I did the same on Green Hill Zone Act 2 on Sonic 2 :P kept kicking robotnick's ass and falling in the lava

Ok, the most embarassing moment for me now is Sonic CD's Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness... Played the whole night and only those two levels... CONFUSING AS HELL!!!!!

Heh, yeah that one can be an annoying little git. Since he targets where you are though I always make him destroy the far left block and so on like that until I beat him. That way there's no hole :P.

Personally, my embarassing moment was when a friend from another forum paid a visit, and I only had C and D ranks  *needs to practice*

What doesn't help is that they show you how it's done and get A ranks without even trying

Mine was just yesterday, playing Sonic 1 for the first time in ages. Second special stage, fall right into a GOAL right away. Duh.

Luckily I pulled it back with some awesome GOAL-evading stunts on the third.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 06 in Crisis City where sonic flys in the air and lands on a rail to grind it, i kept pushing the analog stick where he had to go to land on the rail but he kept falling over and over and over missing the rail. Last time i did not touch the analog stick at all and he landed on the railing perfectly...

A few days ago I played through Sonic 2 for the first time in years. Did the usual, picked up all the Chaos Emeralds in the first two acts then stormed through the rest of the game as Super Sonic. The moment of embarrassing stupidity came at the Spikepit Of Doom in Mystic Cave Act 2. I've known for years exactly where in the level it is so as per usual I cruised up to it, stopped and jumped for the vine....

....unfortunately about ten seconds earlier I'd acquired enough rings to become His Twitchiness, Super Sonic. His invincibility, super jump and super speed make kick major monkey ass but his super reactions mean precision jumps aren't easy. Hence...

.... not only did I fall into the Spikepit Of Doom that I KNEW was there but I had to wait for over a minute for Super Sonic to run out of rings and finally die.

One word: Hydrocity.

To this day, I always screw up and die on it! I beat it once, but I got a new computer, so I had to start all over! AHHHHH!!! THE MEMORIES!!! THEY BURN AND LAUGH AT ME!!!! AHHHHHHH!!! *takes a deep breath.* Whew. Glad I got that outta my system.

Well, the most embarrassing moment for me happens on a regular basis. Every time I play Sonic The Hedgehog (GEN) I always seem to get killed by the first little enemy in Green Hill Zone Act 1. Most of the time I get distracted and forget to jump... :(

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle had the most glitches I've ever seen in a Sonic game. SA1 didn't seem to.

Yep. I got STUCK IN THE RIGHT HAND WALL trying to get off that thing. Multiple times.

FUN FACT: there's a second way to get past that barrel, IF you have a Turbo controller. Get the Water Bubble shield early on in the level, and DON'T LOSE IT. Then, when you reach the barrel, flick on the Turbo mode, hold down a jump button, and watch with glee as Sonic b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-bounces his way through the barrel... Or occasionally gets stuck in the wall.

Dr Shaneman
23-04-2009, 12:07
Or you could read the manual where it says what the barrels can do and what obviously all of us didn't do >_<.

23-04-2009, 15:56
I've done most of the things people on here have done, at least with the mega-drive system games. Heroes I got quite far on on Xbox, but then I sold that (50p!?) to get it on PS2 to unlock stuff on my Collections (Mega + and Gems). The PS2 version is broken - I got half way through the first level, up to the massive loop and... fell. Every time. I would get to the top of the loop, and they would just stop, no matter what I did. And off the level they would fall... Needless to say, I have NEVER played that horror of a game again.

I coped quite well with the barrel of doom when I got to it. Maybe I'm just that intuitive... I just bounced, and bounced, and bounced... and when it got far enough down I just hopped off.
My most embarrasing thing was not actually my doing - I let my 3 year old sister play sonic 1. Knowing she wouldn't quite understand how to jump on enemies yet, I enabled default mode so she wouldn't die.
What did she do? She fell through the floor. And not due to default mode - sonic just dropped straight down for no reason. *sigh*

It's quite amazing how many people couldn't do the barrel bit in Sonic 3. I don't remember it being a problem and I'm crap at figuring out stuff in games, had to get a guide to beat Shadow of the Colossus and everythink.

Heh, I remember one time.. I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and there was some glitch which was that the lava wouldn't stop coming up and it stayed like that until I turned it off. So basically I was killed right after I lost every life I had.

I often wonder what I would do if I were to take drugs. Play retro games should definitely be on that list, but I think I'd be cowering in a corner for most of it.
That, and I get so angry with games as it is... I would probably kill anyone in the room with me if they made a derogatory comment.

I have never had a game annoy me as much as that one. If it was my game and not rental places ida snapped it in half, but I did ask for my money back from them when I returned it.

Its pretty bad that I had to argue with them to take it back and not charge me for it.

You didn't really need to say much more than that.

Why are people still using the phrase "Next gen" when they're referring to the PS3/360/Wii? They're current generation now: "Next generation" should refer to the next batch of consoles.
