This weeks choice is from FPS Leo and he's chosen Chakan for the mega drive.Released on June 8th 1992 for the mega drive and game gear, A sequel was also planned for the dreamcast but never released. Here's some info.
The game follows the tale of Chakan, a warrior who was so confident in his martial abilities that he declared even Death couldn't best him in battle. Of course, Death appeared and challenged Chakan with a proposition. If Chakan could defeat him, he'd be granted eternal life. However, if Chakan was defeated, he'd become Death's eternal servant. The battle raged on for several days and the ultimate victor was very clear. While he defeated Death eventually, he was granted his "reward":
"You are a tactful swordsman, so I will not renege on our wager. I grant you the kiss of eternal life, but, for your arrogance and pride I will temper my gift with this curse. Each nightfall, evils will be shown to you, and the pain of their victims will be your pain. You will never know rest as you wander this world searching to slay the horrors that haunt your sleeping world. You will suffer grievous wounds, but you will not die, and as eternity rolls on, you crave my touch. You face will bear my visage, and your eyes will burn with hellfire. Let it not be said that I am without mercy. There shall be an end to your curse, if all the beasts of the dark are slain, then you may find rest. ”
The player, as Chakan, starts off in a central hub stage, from which he can select one of four elemental-based stages of earth, air, fire, and water. The player advances through that stage until completion, whereupon Chakan is returned to the hub to choose a new stage, either the same or a different stage. Levels within an element must be completed in order, but that is the only restriction on the order the player may do levels. At the bottom of the screen, an hourglass indicates how much time the player has to complete the level. If time runs out, the player is returned to the hub. If killed, Chakan is returned to the hub. Chakan starts out with his characteristic twin swords, but acquires four new weapons in the first stage of each element, which have many uses.
O_O Who chose this?!
If I remember this game correctly...then its the spawn of hell itself o_o pixel perfect jumps, falling through the floor, it was an achievement just to get past the title screen.
>:D I must'eth play now..

Oh man, you're not wrong... I got so annoyed with this game once that I never played it again >_<.
I like this games personaly because of the graphics and sound which add to thegames atmospehere although I will admit it's fookin' 'ard even on the early stages.XD

Well, if it weren't for Comix Zone, I would have to say this is one of the top games that deserve a sequel. Don't know if I'll have a chance to play this one until tommorrow.
(Even though I'm not officially part of the Sega Retro Club......)
Sorry, I vote 1 -_-
Ugly character models, useless combat, annoying jumps and level design.
The premis of the story is pretty cool, but just horrid gameplay =[

Ok.....While I strongly disagree with that rating, I understand that some people just weren't ablt to get used to the gameplay for this game. By all means, there was room for improvement had a sequel came along, oh well.

I'll give it a 2.
The design is good with using elements to structure levels around but going back to the hub after you die each time and because of how bloody annoying it is to complete it gets a low score I'm afraid.

Oh well. I guess I'm just a big fan of some of Sega's underdogs. I'm probably thinking too much in terms of potential as opposed to what it really is. I'll try playing this game again to see if I get the same frustration as others.

Well I can agree =] the premis is really great, character is pretty cool.
But the game itself hurts, it doesn't make me want to play it, the controlls are ankward, trying to fight is a pain...
Comix Zone played amazingly though XD off topic but still...

Well, at least you sort of agree with the potential of the character. He's the kind of character I would like to see in, say....Sega Superstar Fighters as a suprise character.

That would be very cool =] a character no one knew about, he'd gain a huge cult following real fast

Yeah, and while you're at it, play Super Kaizo Mario World too! XD (Search on Google if you don't know it)
@Topic:
I haven't played this ever, maybe I'll get my old MD to work, some TV cables, a controller and the cartridge. :P
Or the ROM. XD
Just gave it a quick whirl. It's the sort of game that should be good but it just doesn't play well, the character is so slow and stiff, traps are everywhere so it's kinda hard to avoid damage, that said I might try it again if I'm in the mood.
Also I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was playing a game starring the Paedofinder General.

Man I forgot how hard this can be. Gave it a 2. This is a case of rose tinted specs for me. I really liked this as a kid but I don't think it's aged well. I think the character is pretty cool though, I think id like to see him in something again,
It gets a 2 from me as well. Some interesting elements, like how you can just hold the attack button and point in the direction you want to hit, but he's so slow and the doubble jump seem to stop working in sertain places. The idea of returning outside the level when you die is just plain stupid.
Can't say I like the design of Chakan. While neither cool, nor dorky, he just looks boring.

He does look a bit strange...he sort of...looked vuagley cool from a distance, but when you look up close he just looks stupid XD
Edit: Out of interest, are the old threads still around? It would be interesting to go see what game has been the highest rated so far (though trying to compensate for different numbers of voters each time)

I did this once a couple of games back but p nut came up with a pretty good argument for not doing it, It was felt if there was a "leaderboard" it could affect the choices made by who gets to choose the game, so everyones trying to just pick a game that would get high scores rather than something that they want other people to experience and im inclined to agree with him.

Fair enough :3 it would have been interesting to see is all, though I get what you're saying.

Ha. Yeah it was the highest ranking overall, but we've had a few games since. If more people want it than don't, I'll put up a thread called "leaderboard" or something like that and update it weekly. Or it might be easier if I polled it.

I never even played it the same time as everyone else XD.

Personally, I don't think there should be a leaderboard thread.
Not all games made were a success, and it would be great to hear / read opinions of those games. *says someone who hasn't actually submitted a review* XD
And besides, this is the Retro Club, not the Elitest Club.
Still haven't got around to buy this game, but I really want too!
Although it sounds to have a steep learning curve that is how games often was in the old days:)
