View Full Version : What would be the ultimate Dreamcast swan song?

This is a kind of "what if..." thread. Next year the Dreamcast is ten years old (time flys, eh!) and I doubt after this year we'd get anything new, but what if Sega did something special for the Dreamcast's 10th anniversary, and gave it the send of it deserved?

What final games would you like to see, Naomi ports, or sequels to classic SEGA games, a proper 2D Sonic? Scud Race? NiGHTS II? Planet Harriers or maybe Jambo! Safari?

I was thinking how cool a final 10 releases would be in 2008, one for each year the Dreamcast existed. That's my idea of the perfect goodbye to the Dreamcast.

Remember, don't make just a list or just mention a game. I want to know why it should be done, and how it could be done!
Oh and don't say Shenmue III, that's beyond never happening! :(

---------

Anyway, I'd love to see 10 final games, released monthly from Febuary to November 2008. One for each year. As the months go on, the games released get better and better.

01: Propeller Arena
100% completed game, it has been leaked, but I for one would love to see it have a release. Sega could just remove Online from the menu and change the licensed music with some suitable SEGA music from their archives.
02: The Maze of the Kings
Not the best shooter, but another one would be good to see on the Dreamcast, my main gripe with the arcade version was the stupidly shaped gun, so I reckon a Dreamcast version would be better. Would be easy, cheap and fast to port I reckon since it's NAOMI.
03: Sega Strike Fighter
I've never played this, this is to really fill the one gap I had, but from the screengrabs on System16.com it seemed decent enough. Is it good?
04: Jambo! Safari
Fantastic game, I loved playing it in the arcade, I've wanted a home conversion for fucking years!
05: Planet Harriers
A canned Dreamcast game I was looking forward to, as I love Space Harrier but never ever sadly played this in the arcade.
06: Scud Race
They started it, so why not finish it? Scud Race is fucking immense, but I've only played it once, I can never find it, so SEGA, lemme play it when I want!
07: Panzer Dragoon
This was the last one I thought of, I needed to think of something special, Panzer Dragoon is ace, but never saw a Dreamcast game, perhaps a totally new game, or a remake of the first two? Either way, would be cool.
08: Streets of Rage 4
A true Streets of Rage sequel, keep it 2D and use the Dreamcast's power to draw some big gourgous sprites! Make the game utterly huge, and throw on the first three as unlockables for good measure. Yuzo Koshiro must make the new music too!
09: Sonic & Knuckles 2
Like Streets of Rage, a true sequel to the Mega Drive games, done in true MD style but using the Dreamcasts power it could have amazing sprites and level design. If this done in a Sonic CD style too in regards to music and "classic Sonic" anime style FMV (like the Sonic CD intro) between stages it would be really fucking cool.
10: NiGHTS II
Get Yuji Naka and PROPE to do this, Yuji Naka loved the Dreamcast, and this would be the perfect sending off. A remake of the original with gorgous VGA graphics, with the odd new stage added for good measure? It would sell a fuck load, even for a dead console!

Your turn guys! :)

10: Shenmue Online
I think it would work on Dreamcast, they would have to restart the servers, though.
9: Half Life
It was finished. There was even a commercial filmed. Not releasing it is a sin.
8: Samba De Amigo 2: This game is so awesome, and it's practically begging for a sequel. It's even joined the pantheon of commonly referenced Sonic Team games! (Chu Chu Rocket!, NiGHTS, Billy Hatcher)
7: Burning Rangers 2: Why hasn't there been a sequel to this? Has SEGA forgotten about it? (Probably.)
6: Planet Harriers: Space Harrier. Dreamcast. 'Nuff said.
5. Sonic X Treme: This game looked like it was coming along so well, it would have been the savior of the Saturn if it wasn't for Yuji Naka!
4. Chu Chu Rocket! 2: Another quality Sonic Team title begging for a sequel. It's almost like Sonic Team makes (or made) games just to make us want sequels. (Maybe that's why they only make crappy Sonic games now...)
3. Knuckles the Echidna or (Miles "Tails" Prower): I think a game based on either character would be a great addition to the Sonic series, as long as it isn't BAD.
2. The Ooze 2: The Ooze was an original and interesting Genesis title that would be really cool in 3D. What better system than the Dreamcast? I don'
1. NiGHTS 2: SURPRISE! Just a graphical update, maybe with a few new levels.

So there you go, not really in any order, except for the last one.
I'd also like to see the GCN PSO missions available for Download for Dreamcast PSO players. (Especially Dream Messenger!)

Yeah it's meant to be a bad version, but what do you think would be the ultimate Dreamcast swan song?

My 2 cents?

A Jet Set Radio sequel. Not a remake (although the remake was just as fun if not more so than the original) but a full sequel. New levels, old ones, heck, just plop Beat in the middle of Tokyo and you got a game. the amount of things they could do with they style of Game play in JSR is uncanny, not to mention simple story expansions, maybe some back story on the Characters and gangs, and why Tokyo went downhill the way it did. The Vmu would make a grate way to create new graffiti and give it to friends. Its not like they even need to update the Graphics, the Dreamcast can render cell shading no problem

Hmmm....

I have thought about said topic before, and what comes to mind is a Alex Kidd platformer, this was SEGA's first notable mascot (not counting Opa-Opa), he started it and he should end it. A 3D platformer would be great in the vain of say? Rayman 2? Or maybe a 2D Wonderboy with 3D models.

from what i've heard some companies (admitidly in japan) are planning to make games for the dreamcast up until late 2008, but not sega, so as futile as wishing for a game is, i'd like to see some sort of amazing revamped new Soul Calibur, Since the first was so blindingly amazing, and a sequel couldn't be made since its already made on other consoles, a sort of, special edition would be nice.

Its the only thing I could think of :P, its more likely than a New Alex Kidd game... :D

But as far as why it needs to be done... it was so diffrent the first time I played it, and maybe it wouldent be as new and fresh if they made it now, but I feal with a remake (they could use the same music, and even the voice acting... which I like... well some of it...) would still find a audiance among gamers of today.

Sure its not all fast twitch action, that gamers seem to favor these days, but I think theres still a market for a game like Shenmue.

Thats my very ranty reason.

I would actually like to see a new Sonic 2D game. Something like a sequel to Sonic & Knuckles (Sonic 4??) or even a remake of Sonic Adventure 1 or 2 but in 2D. That would be nice... just like some brave folks at the Sonic Cage Dome tried to do. Sadly, it didn't work out.

Another game would be a new Jet Set Radio. Do you even need to ask why??

And, of course, Shenmue III (sorry, Mark). Let's face it, people, all of the above mentioned games deserve to be the DC's swan song, but Shenmue III is THE game every true Dreamcast fan would want to put his hands on. I know I'm asking for too much, but... I WANT TO SEE THE ENDING!!

I'd love to see Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD come out in full 3D keeping everything the same and added the extra graphical power. Release the best of Sonic for SEGA's best console, and yeah, I can't say Shenmue III so I have to pick something! Maybe a new PSO title with full broadband capabilities, free to play and the server up for about 3 more decades? I'M ALLOWED TO DREAM! The greatest gift to Dreamcast fans though, which would null and void this topic, we wouldn't care about this topic like, but the continuation of the Dreamcast and releasing their games back onto it. Okay you got me wandering back into dreamland, no pun intended. Can't blame me, even without releasing a new game this console still remains a gaming stand point and one all consoles should aim to be like.

Just hearing that reminds me of the Sega Ages series and how they did some of the 2-D games in semi 3-D... Its true what you describe is quite the dream--especially on the DreamCast, but it would be neat to see if done right. The key being done right. I was not a fan of Golden Axe in (semi) 3-D...

All they should be doing is altering the graphics and having you run through the levels in a "pipe" like way, imagine running through the GreenHill zone and in 3D and watching the camera move to the side showing Sonic run round it for the first time, bliss. ^_^
