Hi kids!

I just learned of a new Phantasy Star game called Phantasy Star Zero, it's basically PSO for the DS and I can't wait becuase I loved the Dreamcast version. It's going to have online play and possible microphone and/or picto chat esque communication system. Here's a mag scan.

That certainly looks... interesting. It also looks less Sci-fi than Star Ocean.

Did you play PSO on the Dreamcast/PC? I bloody loved it! I have no idea what Star Ocean is.

From the little I've seen, Star Ocean is similar but loads more Sci-Fi.
This looks pretty good, never got a chance to play any of the originals but as Reknoc said it looks very interesting.

I played Blue Burst on Schthack server, since I can't see any reason why I would want to pay a monthly fee for something similar to Guild Wars. It was alright it's fun to play now and then.

Star Ocean is a terrible JRPG made by Tri-ace, makers of terrible JRPGs, that only seems to be classed as Sci-Fi because it has like one spaceship in it at some point for like a minute.

Edit: This is exactly what Squenix should have done with Ring of Fates instead of the game's WiFi mode being some stupid Mog crap.

Hopefully there won't be a monthly fee, but I wouldn't count on it, however i'd pay it anyway as the chance to play PSO on the throne is awesome!

Looks cool and online play sounds like fun but how do we know SEGA are gonna bother bringing this over to the UK, they have yet to bring out the PSP game over here yet. But I do hope they bring it out here I've not played any of the PSO games and i'm not really into RPG's as such but I would not mind giving this a shot.

They'd be fools not to, remember the DS prints money. Also they released Bleach DS over here when the PSP games never make it out of Japan.

This game will so be mine day one. I may even go the import route with it.

Never played the first one, but Star Ocean 2 at least was fun to play and was good enough to replay it. As for Star Ocean 3 ... biggest disapointment ever. The game may have some good points, but it's boring and hard as hell.:mad:

I think that was because of the fact that the manga and anime was starting to get big over here in the UK so I guess SEGA thought of it as a way to make easy money. Its like what Atari did with the Dragon Ball games since the anime is big over here it was obvious that they would bring the games out over here as it would be a way for them to print money. But in the end I'm glad SEGA did bring out the Bleach on the DS out over here as its a fantastic game. Its a shame that Sony did not bring out the PSP games over here as I played a demo of one of them and its not a bad little game.

Well that game certainly looks...interesting...:blink: I'll have to get it when it comes out or things may get...ugly...

(And did someone say star ocean? <.<...>.> Yeah its a hard game that has a way out there sci-fi element, but if you're into that kind of thing its pretty fun...its kind of like the tales of series only with guns, lazers and ships...etc. (And tri-ace isn't that bad of an rpg company. They did make good rpgs like the original Valkyrie profile: Lenneth and a few star oceans...three...))

Looks like a pile of puke.

...No offense XD

If I could tell the character from the mountain it may look interesting, but nah...

No way! Ugly screens on a low quality Famitsu scan (guess it's Famitsu sure looks like it)?

Star Ocean isn't hard, it's poorly made especially 3. It's nothing like the Tales series, except for the original SNES Phantasia which was made by Tri-ace, since the battle system has actually gotten better and actually fun unlike Star Ocean which managed to get worse. Yes the Sci-Fi elements are way out there, so far out there it turns around on itself and it just another fantasy JRPG.

Star Ocean actually is hard depending on the difficulty setting(3 was the most expansive and had replayability value but i'll admit it was lacking some originality and other components) and blah blah blah...to put it simply its an rpg for people who like that sort of thing and has that point of view on the series because everyone generally has a different opinion.

The third game could be compared to a tales of battle style with the 3-d elements and the real time functions it included(thats why I included that sayijng that it was like the tales of series) but it lacked to. It was still unique(In fantasy aspect) if you could make it through the whole story because its just not one of your average go here in a ship kill stuff then leave and go get a bigger ship format and included something major(plot twist) that I don't think other games could do sucessfully in their stories and not confuse the players.(I would post what it was but I don't know how to use spoiler tage =_=)

I'm not here to debate on a game thats off topic from the main discussion the threads supposed to be about. I think it would be best if this was dropped and wasn't talked about in this thread at least. (*doesn't like arguing* <.<...>.>)

Gonna get this game no matter what! Loved it on the Dreamcast where I played way to much online! Hopefully this one will get a EU release. Also hoping to see this PSP version on these shores. If not import is a must!!

Game has has finally got an official site:

Graphics are pretty nice for a DS game, if for whatever reason you find that sort of thing incredibly important.

Okay it seems the japanese version has a release date of 25/12/08. That's cool I guess, are shops open during Christmas there?

It also mentions something starting on October but I don't know what, pre-orders maybe?

Can't say I'm a massive fan of the rather generic looking anime artwork.

Conference (part one) (translation below)

Conference playthrough (part two)

TRANSLATED BY KESUBEI FROM PSO WORLD!

(The presentation begins with a question to the producer from the MC.)
Q: What is the meaning behind the title, "Phantasy Star Zero?"
A: We wanted to create a completely new game, with new characters, a new
story and a new world. It's called "Phantasy Star Zero" because we aimed to
return to the feel of the original work.
After that, he begins his presentation about the game, starting with
Visualchat {0:49}
With visualchat, not only can you communicate with letters and characters,
but you can also send unique pictures. This tool will making chatting more
fun than just sending simple words. You can even use your favorite illustrations to surprise your friends!
-Store visualchats into shortcuts {1:18}
Also, you can also send visualchats that you've saved into shortcuts (He
shows more than 10 shortcuts, by the way - he gives no maximum number).
-Copy a friend's visualchat {1:33}
Some of you are saying "But, I'm not good at drawing, so..." Well, relax!
We've made it so that you can copy someone else's visualchat from the chat
log. From the chat log in the chat menu, you can copy someone's visualchat,
edit it, and save it as a shortcut. With the editing feature, you can change
it enough make it appear completely different!
-Use visualchat anywhere {1:56}
You can use visualchat not only in the cities, but also in the midst of
battle. Although, most people will be so busy, they can't spare the time to
chat. When that happens, just use your shortcuts! Depending on the
situation, a visualchat can make the battle more exciting.
(Then, he began presenting on the games modes )
PS0 takes place on the Earth and on the Moon. Let's watch the prologue.
...

Character creation {4:09}
The same characters can be used in all modes of the game, and you can save up to
three characters. PS0 has three races and three jobs, but character creation
is where you can make each character unique.
Story mode {4:45}
PS0 has three game modes. We'll begin with Story mode. Your adventures as
a novice hunter begin in Dairon City. The story doesn't truly begin,
however, until you come across a young newman girl named Sarisa. Story mode has
some animated cutscenes.
Wireless {5:42}
With up to four friends, you can have an exciting time adventuring (while
using visualchats, of course). In Wireless, there are three types of play
modes: Friend, Free, and Single. With Friend, you can play wirelessly with
those you have exchanged friend codes with. In Free, you pick your desired
location and are matched with other players. In this mode, you cannot use
visualchats; instead, only pre-set phrases are allowed.
Wi-fi mode is, of course, free.

Battle System {6:39}
Like PSO, PS0 will have the customizable Action Palette. You can do up to
three hit combos if you time the attacks correctly. Also, there's a new
action: evade. With it you can roll out of harms way and set yourself up for
a counterattack. Another new action is the charged attack.
To use it, you hold down the attack button for a couple of seconds and
release. The attack released depends on the weapon.
Technics also benefit from the new charged attack. When charged, a technic's
range or power will increase.
We've included a number of weapon categories into PS0. A new category of
weapon is the shield. You can naturally defend with the shield, but you can
also attack with it (looks two handed). Another new weapon is the
"gunslash" (gunsword). In close range, it acts as a sword,
but in long-range fighting it functions as a gun. Of course, there
are a lot of rare items! In total, there are about 350 weapons in the game.
There are of course many other great aspects about this game - fields,
enemies, cities - but I cannot talk about them today. However, please look
forward to upcoming info about PS0.

The second video is with the director, and he is narrating a play-through of the game. I haven't watched it, yet.
The sound effects in this video are much better than the previous videos. It seems like they just took all the sound effects from PSO. They must've gotten the same composer as well, because the music sounds extremely similar to the tunes found in PSO.

Sounding good, I wish Crystal Chronicles was like this.

You don't have to pay to play PSZ online with friends? Wow, that's surprising.

That said, if it's just basically a remake of PSO again, I don't think I'll bother. I've already played three of those, I don't want another one.
