View Full Version : SEGA Ages Releases
Anyone know why SEGA Ages (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://ages.sega.jp/&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://ages.sega.jp/%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff)/3D Ages seems to be releasing their games mostly in Japan only? Sega Classics Colleciton (http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=classicscollection) was a step in the right direction, however, there are still many titles re-released as Ages games we haven't seen. You'd think if they went through the work (identifying the game as popular and profitable and updating them or porting an arcade version), they'd want to profit from it as much as possible.

Plano huh? I used to work at Collin Creek Mall! :D
Anyway, to answer your question... These games are no longer remakes or ports of the original games like Space Harrier, Out Run, Gain Ground and the earlier titles were. Apparently Sega wasn't too happy with the comments people were making about the quality of the graphics, and the various complaints that the games were not simply "ports" of their classic titles (Which absolutely INFURIATES me)! Sega gave D3 AGES the boot and decided to then just start releasing ports of their classic games. These are OK for anyone who doesn't still have the originals, but I was REALLY enjoying a fresh spin on these games even if they weren't the best looking games... After all, people need to realize that these were BUDGET TITLES in Japan, and we got a small handful of them on a single disc! The gameplay is still solid in most of the games, so I was quite happy with them (Especially Space Harrier  ). Anyway, I don't foresee Sega really putting much interest in the U.S. PS2 anymore, and considering they already reacted to negative press in the first place, we can pretty much assume that the U.S. is not going to see any of the newer compilations. Of course, there's always a chance, so who knows... but I do wish they still had D3 AGES doing them! :( It was probably going to be the closest thing we'd ever see to a "new" Alex Kidd game!!!
Anyway, I've got all the import titles, and the Monster World collection comes out next week ( :D ) and I've got that pre-ordered too. I still like the ports (especially of arcade games like Quartet and imports we didn't get like Alien Soldier), but I would have much rather had remakes though! *sigh* Oh well, such is life I guess.

Wow. :) I get my hair cut there all the time...

I didn't even know they were doing Monster World complete collection until this morning when I decided to do a little SEGA Ages research. That is going to be so awesome. I loved "Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap" (Sega Master System) and "Wonder Boy in Monster World" (Sega Genesis).
Thanks for the quality answer to my question. Too bad they didn't bundle an unmodified port and the updated ports together. Or at the very least they could do things like what they did for Gauntlet on the 360 (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/g/gauntletlivearcadexbox360/default.htm)... You can just go into options and turn off the enhanced graphics for an original experience. :(
i have the sega ages galaxy force II for the saturn and it's sweeeeeeeeeet^_^

That's EXACTLY what they should have done! Given the original title in the package, and then provided either an enhanced port, sequel, or whatever other updated package they wanted to make! This way it would have kept the people who only wanted to play the original versions happy, while people like me (who still HAVE the original versions) get to experience their favorites in a whole new light! Too bad we aren't running things up there huh? ;)

Well for all we know it may have cost too much time in development to do both. :( Sometimes I wish companies in the video game industry would get asked the questions people really want to know in those interviews. The other day I read (http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/sonicrevolution/news.html?sid=6165513) and watched (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/video_player/popup.php?sid=6165555&pid=932811) this interview with Yojiro Ogawa. I was so wishing they asked more questions revealing why Sega let out Sonic '06 too soon. It was interesting hearing how they were shorted on time for Sonic and the Secret Rings and the two development teams.
if u wanna know, you can buy this collection for ps2 called the sega classic collection. Just a handful of sega ages games in one lik Space harrier fantazy zone alien syndrome etc. Check it out, its goo!

I finally got hold of some of them, I currently own OutRun, After Burner II, Golden Axe, Space Harrier and Monaco GP. Would love to get my hands on the full set someday, which may prove a bit pricey, but it's a pretty decent collection and it's the only reason my PS3 gets any play time at the moment...
