I've always been curious at what other people like on systems and I usually discover some new coll game I never knew about, nevertheless what are your favorite 3 N64 games??

My favorites are:
1.Super Smash Bros.
2.Diddy Kong Racing.
3.Kirby 64: the Crystal Shards.

In no particular order i'd say goldeneye, Mario 64 and mario kart. Goldeneye and kart are still great on multiplayer.

1. Goldeneye/Perfect Dark
2. Conker's Bad Fur Day
3. Mario 64

1 and 2 had fantastic multiplayer.

I still play it quite often with a mate of mine. I just don't get bored of it on multiplayer.

Its certainly a classic game, however if you're used to more modern games it'll end up feeling clunky and pretty rubbish :P if you find it cheap then its probably worth picking up though

1. Goldeneye
2. Perfect-Dark
3. Banjo-Kazooie

If I only had three games, that would suit me.:)

Wave Race, Body Harvest and Wayne Gretzky's Hockey were all good fun. Don't know what they would be like today as I sold my console a good 8 years or so ago now, and the N64 has aged badly compared to the other consoles of it's generation.

Its impossible to mention only 3 N64 games, i can list 10 of my favorites because i grew up with the console.

1. Zelda: Majoras Mask
2. Paper Mario
3. Mario kart 64
4. Lylatwars
5. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
6. Super Mario 64
7. Mystical Ninja
8. Banjo kazooie

My list, culdn't only mention 3 since their placement vary heavily from time to time. In my opinion, there weren't that many great games on the N64. However, the great ones were true masterpieces.

I grew up with this, since it was my first own console:

1. Kirby 64 The Cristal Shards
2. Star Fox 64
3. Banjo Tooie

I could mention Conker, Paper mario and Diddy kong racing, because those 6 are my always favorite

1. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME

There's a reason it's commonly cited as one of the greatest console games. The story was rich, with all the time travelling allowing you to explore various elements in Link's life, but to me it was the whole package that makes the game so amazing. They created a living, breathing world with that rising and setting sun throughout Hyrule. I remember just running around that place for hours just to see the graphics of the day changing right before my eyes. It was more than just eye candy though, since the baddies would only come out at night. A great idea that broke gaming away from canned conventions and made it feel as if the game could actually change at a moment's notice. Playing all the (beautiful) songs on the Ocarina was also the stuff dreams are made of. The way they used the Z-trigger for Link and his weapons also really felt like it was getting the best use out of the N64 console. A masterpiece.

2. POKEMON SNAP

Such an original game, and as a filmmaker myself, it was awesome to play a game where you had to point your camera and get those perfect shots to advance to the next level. It was a nice way to build on the "gotta catch em all" mantra of the series by keeping an archive for you to "snap em all". While many other great N64 games have been updated on newer consoles, this game and its structure remains something that hasn't been duplicated since. Hopefully some day we can see another game like this classic.

3. DIDDY KONG RACING

It was MARIO KART for the hardcore gamer, since there was none of that stupid second place catch-up that made first time players instant contenders in MK64. This one had much improved graphics, a bigger cast, and a nice bit of diversity with the three different vehicles per level. I always love games where you can replay the same level anew with a new power-up, vehicle, path, etc. To me, that's creative game design, since it requires you to develop a level that will work through multiple circumstances. WONDER BOY III: THE DRAGON'S TRAP is like that for the Master System. The boss battles in DKR were ace, Drumstick rocked, and the surprising depth to the entire world was what set this apart from all the kart-style games that proliferated throughout the period.

Killer Instinct Gold! :D
Killer Instinct Gold... HAPPY FACE EDITION!? OH EM GEES, I must have a copy!

Lol, kidding. XP I love Killer Instinct, I sadly only rented it on the N64 way back when.. I'd love to have the game some day.

Great lists so far!

My list would be from least favorite to most..

3. Jet Force Gemini
2. F-Zero X
1. Super Smash Bros.

KILLER INSTINCT was indeed a fun game. I can't believe they gave up on the series after the N64 version. Could it be yet another victim of Nintendo's commitment to "family" gaming? Other than CONKER, this is about as edgy as Nintendo themselves got as a developer. For shame!

3. 007: Goldeneye
Probably the best console-based first person shooter. It is incredibly fun to this day, and was, without a doubt, a great inspiration for FPS to follow. One of the very very VERY few console FPS that actually pulled good controls off.

2. Super Smash Bros.
Does it really need much explanation? =O It's a great and fun little fighting game, giving the good old genre a new twist, and tossing in Falcon Punches and annoying yellow rats shooting lightnings. First game of a great series, and already a great game on itself.

1. F-Zero X
Who woulda seen it coming? ;O No contest, really. This game is perfect. Who cares about the clunky graphics, this game is still perfect. Great speed, great control and gameplay, great music, great track selection, great ideas (X Cup, bitch - randomly generated tracks!), etc.
What's not to love about this game? Hands down, it's easily the best game on the Nintendo 64. <3

Honrable Mention: Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64
Great shmup. :3

I order from 3 as the least and 1 the most:

3. Super Smash Bros.
I loved this game I played it with my bro up until the SSBM came out. Still love this game and it's predecessors. I just love how all the nintendo stars were smashed up into a large brawlfest.

2. Perfect Dark
defiantly a move up from Doom, I got hooked to this game as soon as my friend invited me over to play it. I have to agree with Recknoc with the Fly by wire missiles. me and my friends would set weapons to only those, turn off the map(I can't remember if there was a map in that game), then hide and try to find each other with the missles^^.

3. Conker's Bad Fur Day
First 18&up rated game I ever played and didn't know what to expect at the age of 13...But that came all too soon><. Story mode was really run. Loved the great singing poo and bashing the robot right in the brass balls. But most of all I loved the multiplayer mode. The weapons and death were funny and animated. I loved the chainsaws.

Why only 3? A top 5 seems more reasonable (I'd say 10, but to be honest I'm not sure I've played that many N64 games :P) Oh, well.

1. Paper Mario because it's brilliant and full of charm. Many fond memories with Gombario and the others. Easily the best RPG on the system ;P

2. Zelda: Majoras Mask. I loved Ocarina of Time, but when I played Majoras Mask I instantly fell in love with this new land, it's colourful characters, and the darker atmosphere. And Song of Healing was bloody fantastic.

3. Lylatwars. The controls are awesome, the replay value is good, and the quotes are the best on the system. And it has easily the best voice for Wolf O'Donnel.

I restarted this game on an emulator to see for myself, since I thought it was pretty much pure shit back when I first played it. Have to admit it's allot better than I remembered, but the level up system is really stupid, the story pretty non-existing and everything feels very cheap and rushed. NOT a Paper Mario killer.

Wait, you just said it was a whole lot better than Paper Mario, and now you call it total rubbish? Well, Project 64 handles it pretty well. Quicksaves helps allot.

The difficulty curve is horrible. Once you get strong, the monsters in the first area can barely hurt you, but the 2nd area monsters in the forest will whoop your ass. Leveling up defence is such a pain too.

As it has been said the N-64 really did not have as many games as the other consoles out at the time, but the fact that the cartridges were more expensive meant that most of the games were pretty good. A lot of the third party developers gravitated towards the PS1 as Sony was hardly any competition compared to Nintendo or Sega.
The nice thing about the cartridges was that there was no loading times while you were playing the games, you could go anywhere in the game and never have to wait for it to load.
As far as my favourite games for the system, if I may group the two Zelda games together(even though they were quite different from each other)as they were both great in their own way.
Both Banjo games are great as well(Rare were in their prime)
I loved both Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing, and agree with what has been said regarding their differences.(thank you again Rare)
I enjoyed both GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, with each game having pluses and minuses to set them apart.(man Rare were good then)
Donkey Kong 64 was super, with an unforgettable soundtrack, and many firsts for it's game play.(oh no not Rare again)
Jet Force Gemini blew me away the first time I played it, as I could not put it down, a fine score as well made it all the more enjoyable.( I guess I liked pretty much everything Rare put out)
Conker Bad Fur Day is an amazing game, Rare left Nintendo with a bang, strange that it was less censored than the X-BOX version
Lastly I find it odd that Super Mario 64 has not been mentioned, as it raised the bar in many ways, and even now I can play it and feel right at home.

Wow Donkey Kong 64? Really? That game was the biggest disappointment considering how fantastic the 3 Donkey Kong Country games were.

Edit: Even if the Country games weren't so amazing 64 would still be shit with the sheer amount of collect-a-thon bullshit that game had and the dick "hey you can't complete the game ever unless you can do this stupid difficult version of Donkey Kong"

Yea the platform mechanics, levels and hub world were all good but to actually progress to the next level you needed to do stupid shit like have 100 yellow bananas 43 green bananas 2 red bananas 10 reels of magic film 1000 crystal coconuts 90 banana birds and a coin. It was incredibly dull and to be honest it's something that has stuck with RARE, since Banjo-Tooie started it and DK64 and Starfox Adventures being the worst offenders.

Starfox Adventures rocked -_- one of the coolest games on the cube. Both Banjo games are 10/10, there shall be no rubbishing them, ever.

But collecting things was part of the fun, certainly for Banjo-Kazooie, there was a real pleasure to be had in fully completing each world.

I'd argue the likes of Mario 64 is more boring, why collect coins for extra lives you don't need? Health yes...but you know what I mean, there's rarely a reason to explore lest you need another life

I also enjoyed Starfox Adventures (may I say it was Zelda-ish) looked great, played fine, I guess most fans of the series wanted more flying, and less platforming.

I missed out on the 3 Donkey Kong Country(actually all SNES) games for these reasons;

1.The first generation SNES games did not impress me,
2.Raising a family on one income(basically broke), you may not relate yet, but I'm sure there will come a time when most of you will, so,
3.I loaded up on the cheap NES games for sale(Blaster Master. Star Tropics, etc), and by the time I had finished them(and had some extra cash), the N64 was out.

I understand in the 3DKCountry games you could switch between two different characters, same as the Banjo games, whereas in DK64 you had iirc 5, just like one of my favourite Dreamcast games FurFighters. Each had their own type of skill you needed to advance or complete a level.

As far as collecting items in a platform game, it's really no different than having to level up in a RPG. or back track in an adventure game.
For me, playing DK64 was a new experience, as the last time I had played DK was in the arcades, and WOW getting to play them in a console game brought back many memories.

I haven't played any of the Rare games since they left Nintendo, all I can say is that they were a huge reason why I didn't buy a Dreamcast earlier. I wish now that I had bought a Sega console sooner.
