View Full Version : What is your favorite Mario game?

Personally my favorite will probably always still be Super Mario 64 just because of the time when I got it and how revolutionary it was to me.

Aaaahhh I really can't decide between 64 and super mario world.

I could just about tolerate the gameboy one. In small doses.
They're all sh*t, mario is the single worst gaming mascot, ever.
Mario Kart 64 is about the only one I can bare to play, as all you ever see is the back of his ugly head.
That, and it had a good multiplayer
Super Mario 64 was pretty epic, but it might have been a bit too big for its own good. Even at the time I preferred the shorter, tighter, faster play of NiGHTS, and today that feeling is magnified. The one that really holds up for me is SUPER MARIO WORLD - it built on the best elements of SMB3, while adding Yoshi, better graphics and a ton of multiple paths and secrets. It was a real blast playing this and trying to figure out how to get to all the secret parts of the map. At lot of the gameplay mechanics still really intrigue today, like the colored blocks activating different exits, the punching the chainlink in order to move from foreground to background and timing the cape coasting so you could basically move from one side of the level to the other in the air if you have the skill.
The first game was weak, and the second doesn't really count, but I have to concede in saying Nintendo really got things right between SMB3 and SM64.
I chose Super Mario World as it's the only proper mario game(i.e. not any of the spin offs such as mario kart etc...) that I own.:) I have played some of the others at friends houses but super mario world has to be the best.

Super Mario Galaxy. I'm not a big Mario fan to be honest. The old ones I found boring so the kart series and Galaxy I find the best. Galaxy looked stunning and played really well.

It's either Super Mario Brothers 3 or Super Mario World for me.

Had to go for Super Mario Galaxy since it was the only one I cared enough to play through the end. Plus I like the whole galaxy theme.
Obviously the real answer is Hotel Mario, what is wrong with you people?

I'm not the biggest fan of the main Mario series platformers, but my favorite would have to be Super Mario Sunshine, it came with my Game cube and I thought it was a really decent game, plus it had the epic-ness of Yoshis that you could ride on!

Wouldn't call Mario 64 "New School" as it's quite dated now.

I imagine he's making a 2D/3D distinction for lack of a better word. It makes sense to me, since the mechanics of SM64 and GALAXY are relatively the same, especially considering the time difference between them.

Heh, me neither. Has passed a lot of time. Since 2D and 3D are totally different, I tought it would enter here. After all, Mario 64 was the one who started this new Mario era.
I never played Sunshine, never attracted my attention, and I still need play Galaxy. So I leave it in blank.

The core game mechanics of the main mario games are basically the same since 64. Still quite enjoyable though.

I suppose, I tend to judge by date though.
Even so, I never owned an N64 so...

I completely agree that Sunshine was a fantastic game for those reasons and more. I normally don't mention the graphics of a game because they really don't matter to me, but the beautiful environments and water effects of Sunshine were truly amazing for their time. Plus, I thought the game was loads of fun with F.L.U.D.D., and the story was rockin' too.
The only thing I didn't like about the game is that Bowser..talked. Bowser Jr. was fine, but when Bowser opened his mouth, it was..hideous..I guess it's fitting for his character? O.o
Obviously the real answer is Hotel Mario, what is wrong with you people?
Ha. XD
Super Mario 64 was pretty epic, but it might have been a bit too big for its own good. Even at the time I preferred the shorter, tighter, faster play of NiGHTS, and today that feeling is magnified.
Yeah, I'm honestly really surprised when most people mock me when I mention there were just as fun games released around Super Mario 64's time frame, if not better.
To be honest, I really did enjoy Super Mario 64. I plugged so many hours into that game I'd be afraid to know the actual number(although it can't be more than I spent with *sigh* FFXI or *yay!* PSO). I remember acquiring the final 120th star to this day, and a few days afterwards, I was walking around my elementary school and heard a few 5th graders bragging how their strategy guide helped them get a few stars. I like, 'yes! I'm younger and did it without a guide!' Lol.
But, Sonic R, NiGHTS, and other titles(even released on the N64) were just as fantastic as Mario 64. It was one of many golden ages of gaming, too bad we're not seeing much of those nowadays..
I didn't enjoy Galaxy that much at all. The controls WOULD be fine if A) the camera didn't randomly swerve out of control, B) if the camera didn't randomly adjust itself in fixed locations, and C) if the nunchuk weren't restricted by that rediculous octagonal bordering around the analog stick. Plus, my favorite move in 3D Mario games was taken out; the dive! (hold forwards press B..)>:
My favorite Mario game would be Super Mario RPG. I was so disappointed with future Mario RPG titles because nothing could compare to it. Superstar Saga comes close, but Paper Mario can't even touch how much enjoyment and fun I got out of RPG. Fantastic stuff. I demand a HD remake of sorts, but seeming as though Nintendo's taking their time with that kind of thing..it may never happen. >.o

Omg, this is a hard choice for me. I grew up playing Mario games. It's a hard decision between Super Mario World and Mario 64. Played SMW more than M64, but M64 was awesome. I'm gonna go with SMW because I've played it since I was, like, 2 or something.

My favorite Mario game would be Super Mario RPG.
I totally forgot about Super Mario RPG. =O
I must say that Square did an awesome job with this game. Too many hours I spent with this game when I was kid. Itīs too short, you can finish it in two or three days, no more, with at least 5 or 6 hours of full play. But I guess in that era, was alright.
If it wasnīt for Super Mario RPG... was my first RPG game overall, thanks to that game, Iīve entered in the RPG games.

Well, apart from 2D ones, Galaxy is the only one I ever completed. And it's awesome, all things considered.
It actually hurts me to say this, as a Sonic fan, but you can't beat a Mario game.:(
Tough one. Can't decide but it's between Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Paper Mario. The N64 was the only console where i could fully enjoy the mario games since I simply suck at the NES ones, and noone I knew had a SNES back then.
LeeMan00

Since I there wasn't a NES or SNES in the house, I'd go with SM64, since we had a N64. It was fun, but I personally didn't beat it (my brother may have). Actually, I've never finished a Mario game at all, save for the SSBB, but that's not only Mario.
I really should pick my Galaxy.....

It's all Mario 3 for me. I've always had some problem I can't quite explain with all the later Mario games, maybe they just are not as weird as 3 or something.
I like mario but they were some games i didnt really like so i thought that Mario smash football AKA Super Mario Strikers was the best game i played. i never really liked the new mario strikers. i love to own the gamecube version.but i own the wii version.

My favourite Mario game is Hotel Mario.Personally, I don't count that as a "proper" Mario platformer game. Just like the Zelda CD-i games aren't "proper" Zelda games. (I don't think "proper" is a good choice of words. My vocabulary is vast but limited)

The CD-i Zelda games are basically in the style of Zelda II for the NES.
If it has to be made by Nintendo, though, I'd probably go with SMB3.

Please do. I don't want to take this off topic too much but I've noticed a slight dip in the quality of discussion on the forums over the past couple of months and I think that clearly stating the rules once again may help bring things back on track a tiny bit. Thanks.
And so I don't take this off topic too much I'll point out that I voted for SMB3 because I loved it. (Do I really need more of a reason?)
I think that clearly stating the rules once again may help bring things back on track a tiny bit.
Well, I put a rules announcement in every forum on this board, but yeah, that might need a bit of an update, cos that was done a few months ago.
