(these threads may not be allowed, which would be a shame D: can't remember, so whatever mister mod)

Video games and piracy go together like Pizza and Chocolate sauce, no one admits to doing it but the problem is there people!

Ever since the Amiga days people its been rife and naturally people always have different views on the subject, what are yours?

Personally I pirate older games, Sega Genesis and SNES games. As I can no longer buy them from a shop, it would ebay in which case the developer would see no income anyway.

Newer games I buy, I get more enjoyment from them and have more determination to get my money's worth, I'm also terrified of getting caught :P

Im about the same. Games that are increasingly difficult to get hold of and the developers/publishers would no longer make money on I don't mind gettin off the t'internet but im not for it with new games. Most games companys are in dire straights as it is lately without people pirating the latest releases.

( I think we can talk about our views on piracy but we can't exactly start listing our favourite places to get them or anything like that.)

Same here. I try to rebuy the games I pirate, though, but if I pirate, then only the older stuff which isn't available anymore first hand.
Or stuff you can't get here in Europe, like several Japan-only GBA games. Even there I have some imported.

These days companies have the abilty to lock your system if they catch you. Microsoft offer up lifetime bans and sometimes stop the console completley, I'm sure the wii locked up too

I used to download quite a few PC games, but thanks to Steam I mostly don't have to, though there's still alot of good stuff missing from Steam.

Oh I also download PS1 and GBA games aswell as older systems. Though to be fair the only PS1 isos I have at the moment are (fan)translated versions of Tales of Phantasia and Persona 2.

I have bought a lot of games that I've thought are crap because the Wiki article made it sound good, so I guess I'm pretty good. DS games I'll download and if I like them I'll buy them as soon as I can.
I'm more of an importer though, most of my decent games are Japanese only because quite frankly our games suck.
Most newer games are harder to pirate anyway and the only PC games I play are doujins.

DS games I will download. I can't stand getting an RPG for the DS that lasts a measly 10 hours ~_~

XBox and PS3 games I tend to buy, mainly because I am paranoid that the games I get online will get my account banned, and gorrammit, I spent a LONG time getting to 20,000 GP!

So really, it depends on the game.

Lol, I'm the same man :D I just know that even though millions of people pirate, if I do it once it'll be my console that gets banned!

Plus I think its really hard to play pirate PS360 games >_>

I tend to download arcade games for MAME and some older Mega Drive games. For the next gen stuff for example if its xbox I download the demo from live and try before I buy. I don’t download DS games I'm sort an honesty guy and buy them in the shops and don’t support piracy of any sort. Sure I download older titles and some may say that is piracy but these are games that are years old and in some cases are hard to get these days and many game companies have no plans to bring them back from their vaults.

I'll pirate if

- I already own a copy of the product in question
- the product in question is old and not readily available any more
- the product in question is not readily available here in the UK (and even then I buy it if it ever does regardless of its quality. I tend to just import these days)
- I feel the price of the product far exceeds the value I'll get out of it (I try not to but no way am I paying $600 for Flash when I'm only going to use one tool on it).

I was before a very active warez lurker (one who gets on warez websites or forums, usually under unusual mail addresses and nicknames), to get all the stuff I need. This way I got countless games, and once a Photoshop CS2 copy that got corrupt when I changed computers (oh the great idea, once-in-a-lifetime setup files).

I haven't been caught, and still use my illegally owned softwares, but I stopped using warez forums, it gets me lots of trouble I call "virus", "spyware" and other shit.

Why was I using piracy:
-Because Genesis roms are meant to live forever on MY hard drive
-Because I was craving for Megaman Battle Network a year ago
-Because if I hadn't NR2003 i'd be FUCKED
-Because without Photoshop i'm FUCKED
-And because i'm just a dirty leet geek.

Mainly I get older games for Mega Drive or when I'm in doubt about a game (it's hard to give €40 for a game and not enjoy it). Other than that I usually get anime-style graphical adventures and PC games, when the CD's stop working (had this problem with my Sonic Adventure DX and Death Rally copies).

But if I like a game, I tend to get them when I find them.

Well today I tried to downgrade my PSP and get pirate games.

Sadly none of it worked, far too complex for someone as technophobic as myself.

I wanted to play DJ Max Portable, but I'm no way going to pay £40 for an import, the most I've ever paid for a PSP game is £20.

Which brings me to another point, I've bought 27 PSP games and 6 UMD movies, surely I'm entitled to a pirate or two, right? :P

I didn't even know there were 27 PSP games.

Because there are a lot more, you own a fair few right?

I own about... 5? And I pretty much own anything worth getting (and Ghost in the Shell).

I own quite a bit but I got more on my DS. If I want to play a 3D action game i would play it on my PS2 not my PSP, games like that dont feel right on a handheld.

I've downloded a few roms in the past for things like Mega Drive games, but on the whole pirating is just for cheap dirty pikeys who probably don't have that much respect for any of the games they are downloading and are generally ruining the industry. I don't really buy the argument about downloading retro games either, as you are then depreciating the value of someone's genuine copy of a game they bothered to actually support in the first place and buy.

Those people were around when the retro titles were widley avaliable, they're not avaliable now.

Why should they buy a copy from someone else when the studio and publisher will not recieve a dime?

Well that phrase 'widely available' crops up quite a lot, and is usually just used as an excuse that the said thiving mong couldn't hypothetically go and buy it from their local Game store (as if they ever would anyway), when in reality hunting down some rom, emulator and required knowledge to get the game working probably takes about as much effort, if not less, than getting the game from ebay, and I, like a lot of people, find even buying from ebay less hassle that traipsing round several shops to buy things in the first place.

And I'm sure what somebody else's property is worth doesn't mean anything to a brazen theif, but suggesting you care about the developer to justify what is practically taking money from people, in the form of dropping the value of what they own, is yet more incinserity dressed up in some tenuous theory.

I aquired a couple of roms some time ago but if I really wanted a game that bad, I'd go out and buy it.

I forgot about this thread :D

I'm the opposite of you Mena, if I want a game that badly, I'll download it to play. I'll buy it later when I eventually find it in a store (if ever)

Personally for myself Mr Bread, I don't mind giving my money to a developer or a store but I dislike giving my money to a jerk on ebay.

Its a strange one, I like to collect games but if I had the urge to play a SNES game, I'd just download the ROM :/ I don't buy Pre-owned games either.

I'm not really a big gamer, in that I'll probably buy one for myself every three months, so if something catches my interest Gav usually forces me to buy it :P

Hmm, OK, point made.

As for my stance on piracy, I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. There's a lot more music pirates and movie pirates than gaming pirates. This may be because PC games nowadays are so cheap, and digital distribution's definately finding a foothold in the whole market, so the noise being made about piracy is just that, noise.

Well it practically killed the Dreamcast but these days its near impossible. Try playing pirate games on a 360, PS3 or PSP, its waaaaay too much effort, and the punishments now too. No playing online, etc...

Gavvie
20-03-2009, 23:10
I can speak from experience that piracy on the Dreamcast was quite simple, seeing as I own three games that a friend made for me, but yeah, from that point onwards it get quite difficult to do.

My friend's bro was able to override the lockout on his 360 and he still has Live. Sounds cool, but I don't wanna f@#$ up my warranty.

Anyway, my view on piracy: Although I understand that piracy is illegal, I still download stuff illegally. Probably got a little over $1000 USD worth of compy apps (Photoshop, Vegas, etc) with illegal methods. TL;DR: don't download stuff illegally unless you know what you're doing ;) Oh and don't use LimeWire.

I can honestly say that I don't own as much as pirated game (exept unreleased games of course, but since you can't buy those, you just HAVE to do it this way)
