View Full Version : Radio Sega's GOTY!
Surprised this hasn't been done actually, has it?
Seeing as no one out there has a brain, with their useless GOTY awards (fallout 3? GTA? Get Bent)
Simply say what you thought was the best game of 08 and why it was the best :P we'll tally the votes and see what wins.
If anyone says Sonic Unleashed, I'll have to shoot them :/
Sonic Unleashed.
Actually it's a tough choice between LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria, Saint's Row 2 and Fallout 3 as so far those games are the ones I've had the most fun with. This year they've all been top of their genres, LBP has been my favourite platformer and creator game, Fallout 3 my favourite RPG, SR2 my favourite sandbox games and Valkyria my favourite game I have no idea if I'm spelling right and SRPG.
But I think Saint's Row2 just gets it because of how much crazy fun I've been having with a mate on Co-op and because it has Take on me.

For 2008? Sonic Un ... just kidding. Super Smash Bros. Brawl takes my vote.
Dare I say...Sonic Un...*gets smacked*
Actually, it was a tough choice between MM9, Valkyria Chronicles, LBP, Mirror's Edge and DMC4. DMC was awesome, ME was awesome too...but my choice had to go to...
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots.
I know the game was too overhyped and it was a effing movie rather than a game, but it's fun to play (and watch.)
Sonic Unleashed it's an ugly failure, i prefer Sonic Chronicles XD (Just Kidding)
I guess the game could be The World Ends With You or Kirby Super Star Ultra for DS, and Animal Crossing Wii, since i was waiting for all three to come out like three months before they release, also, i love the gameplay, replay value, and fun you can have with these.
Sonic Unleashed (jokes but it is a good game) But truth for me its Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
My GOTY is Metal Gear Solid 4.
I can't be bothered to say why at the moment, its just the greatest video game ever released, I'll maybe update later ^^"

Gears of War 2.
Uninspired choice?
Yea, maybe so but seriously it was just spot on.
Great balance and involving narrative which GoW1 lacked. Just a very polished game.

Civilization Revolution. A great game overlooked by many. (Perhaps because it requires you to think?) What other game lets you play as Chairman Mao while marching upon Napoleon's Paris while making peace deals with Cleopatra? With it's infinite replay ability and charming attitude to world domination it's my choice.
Also, nothing is funnier than seeing Napoleon falling down after being pushed out of the way by one of your advisers.
Edit: Runners up: Beautiful Katamari and No More Heroes.

Civilization Revolution.
<3
However, my vote for a Game of the Year definitely goes to Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.
Great new installment to the series, and a big step into the right direction of getting Castlevania out of that dusty style it had.
So far its a tie between Smash Bros Brawl and MGS4 :D haha, awesome!

It's probably overlooked because the main people the game appeals to already have CivIV on PC and probably look down on the consolefied version of their beloved classic.
Edit: To answer your question: CivI-IV

Grand theft Auto 4.
An amazingly polished title, addictive, fun, challenging with a little humour. Characters are all interesting (even if Niko becomes a little unbearable at the end). I really can't fault the game, a true masterpiece.

Cahzan wan't to see some big American teetees?
Grand Theft Auto IV is the only GTA that has ever made me wish I was back in San Andreas with its fixation on the number 69.

Mark one up for MGS4. Even though I have yet to play any beyond what I've emulated on the NES, Metal Gear Solid has one of my favorite storylines out of anything I have watched to date. Big Boss is also one of my idols from the vidya.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl for me! The inclusion of Sonic was what made it a must-buy for me, but to be quite honest, I play as other characters more simply because I'm better with them than the blue blur.
Tough descition, I'll have Fallout 3 as the moment the game began I got sucked into the excelent characters. The plot wasn't bad too.;)
So, it looks to still be a tie between MGS4 & Brawl :D Even awesome-er
I didn't think anyone else would vote for MGS ;__; thank you people

I'll go with the Brawl guys but not because of the inclusion of Sonic as I don't think he worked, after all he was in Subspace for the final boss only >_>.
I vote it as for me it doesn't get boring and the music is fantastic.

I agree that the music was fantastic but apart from that and the inclusion of R.O.B (And perhaps Snake) I still think Melee was better.

The adventure mode in Melee was a bit better I feel but still good in Brawl.

But in melee it had replay ability, in Brawl I don't particularly want to sludge through the bland-a-thon again. To be honest the only reason I played through the whole of it in the first place was so I could unlock the characters.

All I got left to do is missions and that's it. I do miss the Melee stages and "Race to the Finish" etc mind you.

Originally he wasn't even in the story. He got this appearance because most if not all of the SSE's storyline/etc. has been done before the decision of Sonic's inclusion.
Sonic was the last character to be included in the game and therefore the SSE.
Little development time for the character himself results in what we have now.

Please don't let nintendo's shit mascot game win this poll. I was starting to think people here had some taste.

I would have added a pole, but I figured members of this forum would hardly be in support of Gears 2, or whatever, they're all very...err...individual :P

That's a good way to describe someone who plays Civ: Rev.
Haha but no I kid, I played the demo but couldn't get into it because couldn't help but feel like I was playing it on the wrong platform and really couldn't stand the controls.

The platform difference didn't bother me since I hadn't played Civ since the original and I got used to the controls quite quickly.

I was gonna say Wario Land: The Shake Dimension at first...

I thought that was a great game.
Another one for me multiplayer wise is Left 4 Dead. Just awesome I think its one of the first online FPS games where you really have to work as a team and not arse about.

Hmm, I loved Mirrors Edge, MGS4, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2 and GTA:IV... I'm yet to get started with Valkyria Chronicles, it's on my "waiting to be played" pile as I want to dedicate a lot of time to it, so I'll finish off some other games first. Seems it's one of Sega's lesser promoted games, yet their best game of 2008. Typical...
For me though MGS4 is my GOTY, I could not sleep until it was finished. Epic from start to finish.
'08 must have been a crap year if the GOTY most people chose so far likes to stop being a game and would much rather you sit through awkward cutscenes that may reveal some plot or may just be complete nonsense, either way you'll be there a good while while it plays out.
Not that MGS4 is bad, but well... I'll save it for the game's thread. When I've completed it (which I will do even if the game trys to stop me by boring me to death) and I may have a look back at a series, which really, ended at the first.

I guess it's just going to be me then....
My game of the year is Gears of War 2 as it has one of the best single player campaigns I've ever played. It's a rollercoaster ride of action, emotion, chainsawing, and much more! I absolutely love it.
Now back to normal service....
Well, we'll say this Friday to end voting?
By my current count, Metal Gear Solid 4 is winning? Have to say I didn't expect that at all :P
