I wanted to make this thread to find out which games are the best out of their series, particulary because some series have too many games and in which case i've not tried any of them. For instance, what would be the best Naruto game or DBZ game to play? This can also include any other series on any platform as well like Sonic or Mario, etc.
Edit: You can also state your system of preference to play the game on.

Ooh, some contraversial choics there by the good Dr. I know Daytona 2001 had more tracks and gone was the horrid pop up, but it felt so slow and pedestrian compared to the Saturn and arcade original, and that's even before you touch upon the handling differences.
As for Underground 2 being better that Pro Skater 3, well that's just sacrilege. ;-)
I dare say a few people will be miffed at the Saturn version of Bomberman being overlooked too.

S'ok it worked about aswell as Oblivion did on console (not very well) but atleast it wasn't developed with console players in mind since it's not heavily dumbed down.

Lol, ok. Still haven't played that one.
From what I've played, Jak 2 is the best (I haven't yet played 3 though) Jacking vehicles was awesome fun.
Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction was the best in my opinion.
I've never played the Jak games and the only Ratchet and Clank I've played is the one I got with my PSP... Not great.

No Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. I almost picked up Secret Agent Clank but didn't really know enough about the series to get a spin off.

I've only ever played two, a PS2 one and a PS3 one. The PS3 was fantastic and its probably a great seires, just not one I ever got into.

I liked both 1 + 2 of Ratchet & Clank, but out of the Jak series, I think I liked the first one best. I mean, the sequels were cool and all, but the first one just felt different...I think it's because Jak didn't talk in that one and he wasn't such a bad guy using guns and jacking vehicles, lol. It felt more Crash Bandicoot style. Plus, I like the blue-haired girl in that one becuase by the end of the trilogy, she got ignored. Daxter was the same throughout though, a funny sidekick.
What about Ratchet : Deadlocked and Jak X: Combat Racing? I heard those weren't so great.

I actually want to revive this thread by asking what is also the best console versions of game titles. Such as, what is the best Tomb Raider game and what system is it best played on?
richarddavies
25-03-2009, 13:03
Depends what were talking about. With the newer systems the difference is minimal really, but I do have an interest in older games when arcades were big and everyone were comparing how good console games were compared to there console counterparts.
When it comes to Tomb Raider, I'd avoid getting Underworld on PS2, or Anniversary on Wii. I've heard many a terrible thing about those.
As for the series in general, Tomb Raider III was, in my opinion, the best of the originals, and Anniversary is the best of the more recent ones (although, I haven't played Underworld as yet).

Okay, is it better to play the old tomb raider games on the playstation or the pc?
Killer French Bread
26-03-2009, 12:09
Yeah, Tomb raider 3 is probably the best out of the first 5 (the only 5 worth playing imo), smart puzzles, good challenge, some great action set peices and a nice variety of locations. I'd say get that on PC because they kept the forgiving save system from the second game in that version instead of you having to guess where to save with your pitiful handful of crystals. And you will need all the help you can get if you are new to the series, I'd already completed the first 2 Tomb Raider games before playing 3, so considered myself a bit of a veteran, but still found it bollock hard to play.
All the first 5 Tomb Raider games are worth playing though, well apart from Chronicles maybe. 2 is especially good.

I went through legend for the first time only quite recently and was quite suprised I enjoyed it as much as I did. I don't know if it's just because im older than when I played the originals but I found legends much easier than the older ones. I never really got stuck at all on it but I remember stressing out and racking my brains with the older ones. Anniversary's good too if you've not played it yet.

No Legend is just insanely easy, but I really do enjoy the new Tomb Raider as much as the old Raider's. Though I'm not a massive fan of the controls on the PC versions, I would say they're the best... cept I can't get TR1 to play with music. :(
Killer French Bread
26-03-2009, 14:33
I'm sure I remember someone telling me there isn't any music for the PC version of the first one and that's why the playstation is the better overall expereince.
But back to the debate: the fact the old games were hard is why I like them. If I'm going to bother with playing through some dragged out adventure game it has to be a war of attrition between me and the playstation, it feels like I've wasted my time if, after countless deaths and hours of plodding through some village of mud huts for an old key, I can't punch the air in a pitifully petulant moment of joy as I savour finally smiting the developers (don't worry, I don't actually do this but always at least like the option). That the games are good as well puts the icing on the whole experience.

Liked Tomb Raider 3 as well for all those reasons above.
Spyro series: Number 1 all the way. It was harder than the others as you had no special moves and enemies/hazards in the home worlds. Though it lacked cutscenes the graphics were great and the music was just pure win.

The only tomb raider game I ever played was the fourth one - the last revelation. I played it on the dreamcast. It was pretty good, but I eventually got lost in it. I do like the look and feel of the new games like legend and anniversary. I feel like playing those on my pc. I may have to look into the older ones, I have the first one for playstation. Also, I think I might want to play number 2 + 3 on pc, because I think they have extra content I believe, idk.
I know some games have varying differences between console ports, such as content, framerate, characters, etc. Makes it hard to choose the best version.
Oh, and Spyro, classic. I can't remember if I liked a particular one better or not. Are the oldies better than the new ones they've been making?
