View Full Version : The House of the Dead: Overkill
I'm pretty surprised there isn't a thread in here about this. That said, it's probably in the Wii forum. I didn't check in there.
Anywho, this game's out next Friday, so I thought I'd make a post for you all to discuss it. I also made it because Eurogamer have posted a review of the game here (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-review), so you can have a readthrough of that.
If you want it in a nutshell, they gave it 8/10. Which is a good score.
So yeah, discuss away.
If you want it in a nutshell:
Combined with the occasionally grating script, these moments of weakness and imbalance can cause The House of the Dead: Overkill to feel flat at times. But that's only because they're thrown into stark relief by the rest of the game's frankly amazing quality, attention to detail and largesse: the impeccable presentation and production values, the clever and generous structure, the compelling scoring, the intoxicating flow of the levels. Incredibly for such a simple and strictly limited game, it almost never tries your patience, and it's made with such infectious and irreverent glee and such obvious pride, you can't help but join in.
Cause that score tells me bugger all.

Suprisingly, no thread for this exists besides this one.
Ah yes, Sega has went the distance on the HOTD series....in more ways than some people know. Check these out for instance:
The Pinball of the Dead

And of course, English of the Dead

Heh, expect me to track down the music for this game, very soon. ;)

Don't forget the ever so great Typing of the Dead. It taught you to type and made it fun by killing zombies with keyboards attached to Dreamcasts with giant batteries. As ridoculous as it sounds it was a good game. In short I'm excited at getting the chace to play HOTD on the wii and simulate killing zombies with the zapper in true arcade style.
What's even better than using the Zapper?

It's an official House of the Dead Hand Cannon, seemingly exclusive to UK and Australia. Lucky us :D

WTF? I thought the US would have surely had access to that XD.. No matter, I'm pretty sure I will apreciate the game nonetheless. Besides, it's not manditory to have a "close-to-real-gun" experience :P.
Well, there's nothing stopping you from importing it. I'm sure it'd still work.

True, but I only import games like Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom for obvious reasons. I won't be too picky about this though hehe.
Yeah, but I was on about importing the gun, not the game. It'd be a good piece of Sega merch to own, especially if I'm right and it doesn't get released in the States.

Oh, that make sense then. I MIGHT consider doing that, depending on what else I do this month.
This is the only Wii game I've ever had the temptation to pre-order  that handcannon is plain sweet and you can't beat a good on the rails shooter.

Would rather have a branded pinball XD.

this one was another one of the games i tried out. i even got a comic book and a shirt at Comic con. Well it plays a lot like the house of the dead 2 and 3 on wii(hehe rhymes) and the game runs very smoothly, minus some points where it changes views. the controls are responsive, and the game looks really good for a wii game, but Condiut was better in that department.overall, im gonna pick this up. the guys at SOA convinced me.
IGN review

They gave the game an 8.3 out of 10 which is a very good score.

But Unleashed got an 8 and looked what people thought of it XD.
Unleashed on Wii/PS2 got a better score than Unleashed on 360/PS3, mainly because they were pretty different games, so you can't really use that as an excuse to say that, just because Overkill got rated 8.3, it's bound to be rubbish.
But Unleashed got an 8 and looked what people thought of it XD.
But then IGN all full of shit sometimes i mean I liked both the Wii and 360 versions and I'm not alone. And if you want more proof I have heard that EDGE magazine have gave the game an 8/10.

Reviews in general are full of shit, I don't make a move until a normal player has bought it v_v look at Banjo Kazooie N&B, broken game that scored high.

Far more better than the lousy Zapper! Gonna buy this through Ebay if my nearby game shop does not sell this!

I got that along with the special edition of the game and it's really good but a little on the uncomfortable side if you hold it wrong

^^ I found that highly disturbing. It made me wonder what zombies do besides feasting on flesh. Now I have nightmares.
I completed this earlier ^_^ Mother was a very annoying boss to try and kill.
What's the difference in the Director's Cut levels? Are they longer or something?
Would the handcannon be compatible with Umbrella Chronicles? :I
Gavvie: Yes the levels are longer as well as that the game will be much harder as there will be more "mutents", your given 3 credits to compleate the level and you have to re-purchase all the weapons and upgrades.
Rayne: Its a peripiral so theres no big difference... I think
Yeah, it's compatible. Just a peripheral, so whilst it's made for House of the Dead, it'll work with everything.

I just meant control wise, I heard the Zapper didn't work with UC so...yeah >_>
The Zapper does, it just doesn't work well because of how you have to hold it.
The Zapper is just a casing for the nunchuck and wiimote to go into, same as the Hand Cannon (although in that instance you have to actually hold the nunchuk seperately).

Ah, in my book not working well means, doesn't work XD
