View Full Version : Summer of Sonic 2009

Taken from Sonic Stadium.

Last year, The Sonic Stadium held, with support from SEGA Europe and Sonic Wrecks, the world’s first Sonic the Hedgehog fan convention in London’s Covent Garden. With a playable demo of Sonic Chronicles, the Guinness Book of Records adjudicating Sonic 2 times, a special song from Dreams of an Absolution singer Lee Brotherton, signings from Sonic the Comic’s Nigel Kitching and a performance from TJ Davis and Richard Jacques (!), the Summer of Sonic metamorphasised overnight from a quaint little British meetup to an internationally recognised, had-to-go-there event.
And as you may already know, we’re doing it all again this year. Only bigger.
I can reveal right now that the confirmed date for the next Summer of Sonic will be Saturday 29th August 2009. The venue has not been finalised, but it will be situated in London, UK.
What I want to know is how many of you will come to SoS 09 on this date.
The reasons I ask this are pretty straightforward, if you knew that we had to turn many people away from the event in 2008. The demand far outstripped the capacity of the poor community hall that we had hired for the day. In a space suited for 200, the Dragon Hall Covent Garden saw 300 Sonic-crazed people flock through their doors. Had we not restricted entry on the Summer of Sonic website, and fully promoted the event in the media as we originally planned, who knows how many people would have showed up.
So what we’re doing here is getting a sample of interested people so we (that’s the Summer of Sonic organisation staff - consisting of myself and AAUK of SEGA Europe for now) can get an idea of how big a hall we can squeeze out of our budget. All you need to do is post a comment stating how many in your household are able to come to this event on the 29th August.
While I can’t reveal anything in regards to what will actually be there this year, here’s some information that will whet your appetite - Jun Senoue knows of Summer of Sonic. Richard Jacques said he would happily attend another SoS. You couldn’t stop Lee Brotherton from getting involved again. Sonic Team’s reaction to SoS 2008 was also reported to be very positive, and SEGA Europe as a whole are both very keen to be more involved yet very respectful as to this being about a fan gathering rather than a buck generator.
This, coupled with the success of Covent Garden last year, should be an indication that there will be at least several things at SoS 2009 to get super-excited about.
So - London, United Kingdom. Saturday 29th August 2009. Who’s able to come?
EDIT: Oh, and spread the word!
I'm gonna try and make this though I might be a little jet lagged since I'll have just got back from Tokyo. Anyone here going?

I highly doubt it, I never even have seen anything past the east coast of America...

Not if I go to the Arcade expo, can't afford all these trips.

I can't go (Although I wished I could). For 3 reasons:

1- I'm too young to travel on my own to London. XD
2- No one in my family would go with me and I wouldn't have the money to go to London.
3- I'd be tired from my trip to Amsterdam.

I'll be there this year (as well as Insert Coin 09) and not miss out like last year, as I had to work then...

Looking forward to it, should be huge this year too seeing how last year surpassed expectations.

I'm definitely going.

Last year was (as Siriku said), "nothing short of awesome" and I can't disagree :)

It would be good to catch up with more people. I met a load of people and some I didn't expect from all corners of the Internet and would love the opportunity to do it again.

It's starting to look like 2009 will be an eventful year for RadioSEGA! Keep it up!

I'm gonna try and make it this year. Not sure how, seeing as I normally see Mena on Saturdays and I'm fairly sure she wouldn't want to spend a day there, but...we'll see what I can manage.

If you signed up to go to SOS09 then you may have to sign up again since Sonic Stadium got wiped off the interweb not so long ago.

How much would it cost?

They say NOT to post again if you did before the wipe

6th March Update: All comments have been wiped with the site’s recent server crash. We still have a count of all the people who took the time to write a comment showing their interest. So as not to mess up our ballpark figure, if you have already written in this post before the server wipe please do not so so again. If you do, please let us know you have already posted before. Thanks!
They haven't mentioned anything about a cost yet and it was free last year. They made their money back through a Raffle.

This is the post on the Sonic Stadium if you want to register your interest or want more information.

Undoubtedly I will be there again this year and will be DJ-ing for you all again!! Dreadknux has said that there will be a load of updates on the Summer of Sonic website very shortly after TSS have yet another server move :S But I am very intriuged like everyone else as to what this gift will be that everyone will recieve. I loved the freebies last year, in fact I was very tempted to steal a load of Sega carrier bags just for the novelty - I mean where else can ya get them?!

Gavvie

Damn server moves, I'm wanting to confirm that I'm going already!

Yeah, same. Should be sent in a couple of weeks, so I hear. Really am hoping I get to go, I've gone and ordered a RadioSEGA t-shirt especially for it, lol.

I've pre-registered. I did that last year as well. It makes it easier for them. My idea of a McDonalds-esque registering system has had approval for next year :)

It's good news to hear that Bentley Jones / Lee Brotherton has confirmed for this year and a shame that TJ Davis can't make it. Her performances were outstanding last year.

So the Hibs game was moved to the Sunday... I may actually go now, it's just depending on how much it's going to cost for me to go from London to Edinburgh straight after the event.

Mena

I'd be more worried about available trains, the last one to Edinburgh leaves at 6, costing about £25.

Yeah saw, which is a bit shite. The match is at 12:30 the next day (bloody ESPN, bastards) so I have to go up Saturday evening. :/

Gavvie
02-08-2009, 00:41
Bah, so even when the footy gets moved, you still can't make it :( Sucks.

Guess I'm gonna have to do work on behalf of RadioSEGA then, eh?

Anyone got there tickets yet? Got shadow on my one whats you lot got on yours?

Mena
23-08-2009, 00:05
Gav and I got ours a while back. Due to a fortunate mishap we got sent 4 tickets: Shadow, Dr Robotnik, Amy Rose and Tails. We've decided to use the latter two because my printer's dodgy and those were the ones that came out best.

I have, and have since had it changed as I managed to persuade my sister to tag along.

My ticket has a very dashing picture of Blaze the Cat on it :D

Had a good time yesterday. Highlights for me was playing Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing, the handling on the cars was a bit loose but the Sumo guys told me that it will be tightened up in the final version but so far I was pretty impressed with the game so far it was good fun to play I dont know who it was but I was playing as Alex Kidd and some girl behind me was going "sqeee OMG its Alex Kidd" that was pretty cool. Also got to play the new Mario & Sonic game and again from what I played was pretty good fun not really much else to say about it. Also that and Bentley Jones performance was fantastic.

I've got some videos I need to crop a bit and put on YouTube at some point. As for my thoughts of the day, I think I'm still trying to digest it all. I mean, being on stage in front of 500 people is a little daunting, you know?
