View Full Version : Jet Set Radio 3 WAS Pitched to SEGA
Nothing really huge in this thread, just thought I'd post something I found the other day.
I was browsing a website called Unseen64 after an article on IGN led me there, and came across something rather interesting. Apparently, Kuju Entertainment (probably best known for the Sensible Soccer remake) approached SEGA in 2006 with some concept art. They wanted to make a JSR game for the Wii, and for some unknown reason SEGA turned the pitch down.
Unseen 64 has got these images on their website, and unfortunately it seems as though that was all there was. No demo reels or anything, just a few pieces of art.
Here's the link: Jet Set Radio Wii (http://www.unseen64.net/2009/02/18/jet-set-radio-wii-concept/)
So, assuming SEGA were to about turn and decide to develop Jet Set Radio 3, would you like the game to follow Kuju's example in terms of its look, or go with something else entirely different? Do you even want a third game?
Discuss away :)

The art looks a bit more cartoon-y than before, but a new JSR would have been cool. But I don't see how the controls would have worked on Wii. 360 or PS3 would have been better if they had made a sequal, or do make one.
Tsk, what the hell SEGA?
The concept art on that site isn't particulary exciting, unlike TS4's, since all it shows is that Kuju (also known for Batallion Wars 2 on Wii) is good at tracing the original games art.
A Wii version would be interesting (infuriating) if they chose to bring back the originals system for graffiti
The artwork is too anime for my tastes....too childish....
I would have wanted in on the 360/PS3 with a large focus on online communities, skating around a massive shibuya terminal with another 38 custom skaters, chatting and using custom graffiti tags.....dreamy man...
Wii waggle I mean...no, I wouldn't want it anywhere near the Wii :/ sorry

Sir, you are a visionary and should be being paid vast sums of money for your moments of genius such as the one above.

I think visions of people tagging porn all over a virtual online Tokyo would have had Iwata reaching for his Hari Kari sword.

Although I'm a fan of Anime style (mostly CG) it doesn't fit this in my opinion.
Well it is only a pitch if this game did go ahead the art might have been different. Now I dont care if this was gonna be a Wii game but one thing is a must, Hideki Naganuma must do the music.

The art work is not bad but why must Sega cancel the game?
They didn't cancel it, they just didn't like the pitch that Kuju gave them and decided not to pursue the project.

That would be the best thing EVAR.
I'm actually really pissed off with Sega that they turned this pitch down...to me, JSR represents the older, more creative days of Sega :(

From my understanding, the series didn't exactly light up the sales charts, so I'd wager that was the reason for not going with the project. Microsoft commissioned Sega to do JSR Future, after all. Still, the idea of using waggle motions to spray paint would be fun, assuming Sega would go that route.
I think the artwork looks fine aside from Gum getting hit with the ugly stick and/or giant mascara brush.

Don't critisize me about this, but I never play the Jet Set games. What's it about?

Basically you play as a bunch of rebellious teens rollerblading and spraying graffiti everywhere as some kind of bizzare protest against the man. Good, stylish fun.

Just think of it as a game based in Essex.

I loved Jet set radio. I had Jet set radio future too on the xbox but couldn't remember much about it in terms of different gameplay styles or modes etc so I looked up a review on eurogamer. My minds pretty sketchy but I was sure it was better than what they made it out?

Really now? Because I don't believe Sega made new consoles off the back of the Triforce, Chihiro, Lindburgh, or Europa-R boards prior to the RingEdge/RingWide.

Overpriced arcade games?

Actualy the NAOMI was based off the dreamcast and not the other was around. I'm prety sure the Chihiro was just an xbox and the triforece was just a gamecube.:)

well, you know what I mean; if the dreamcast based naomi boards had such a success in the arcades back in the day, I'm pretty sure sega can make it work the other way round too :p

Why bother? That game you suggested looking up doesn't look any different to any subpar effort From Software make at next gen games.

Wasn't there one that derived from Saturn architecture too? The Titan I think it was called.

its touchscreen
But that wouldn't change how the game looks. That'd just make it a big version of a DS game :p
Also I don't see how touch screen would work on a home console without being a tad expensive.
It wouldn't. Somebody would have to invent a touch screen telly, or a screen to go over your telly, first.

Or go the Ninty route and have expensive controllers with a gimmiky function. (Controller with a touch panel on it)

Like those super expensive PC tablets. Only Nintendo controllers are pretty cheap.

A full set of 4 Wii controllers (Wiimote & nunchuck) costs £180. I don't class that as cheap in my books.
Yeah, but you could just buy four copies of Wii Play to get the Wiimotes, and then sell the boxed games off on eBay or something to try and recoup some of the profits.

I don't think the Wii has any games that require 4 Wiimotes and Nunchucks. A Wiimote by itself is pretty cheap.
